Chapter 322 - Stormy Night
As soon as Ruo Manni started speaking, Lin Kexin immediately understood what she had in mind.
Lin Kexin’s eyes sparkled, clearly excited, but she still made a token attempt to voice her concerns. “We can’t hide it for too long.”
“It’s impossible to hide it. The round trip will take almost a day, and we’ll need some luck to find Sister-in-law as soon as we arrive,” Ruo Manni replied.
Lin Kexin spoke as if worried, but her expression showed pure excitement. She quickly opened her light brain and sent Ruo Manni a photo of Sister-in-law, Li Ziyan.
Her psychic power wasn’t strong enough to scan the entire B City base, but she could still “sweep” about one-fifth of it. As for Ruo Manni, she guessed that she could probably scan half of it. Finding someone would be easy.
“As long as we can get out, it’s fine. Anyway, Big Brother and the others won’t be able to catch up with us. Once we return safely, they won’t be able to say anything.”
Ruo Manni was someone who acted immediately when she made up her mind. Furthermore, a stormy night was the perfect time to do something sneaky.
It was only a little past 9 PM, and by the time they reached the Northwest, it would be just after 1 AM. With the deep night, the heavy rain, and her mech’s invisibility function, finding someone would be a breeze.
Lin Kexin spoke as if protesting, but she immediately grabbed her protective suit and rushed into the bathroom to change.
The two sisters left the room. They told Lin Ruihai and Song Changlong, who were watching a movie in the living room, that they were going to Ruo Manni’s RV to practice and would stay the night. Then, they both quietly left the villa.
By this time, the rain had been falling for over six hours, showing no signs of letting up. Lightning struck the dark sky with blinding flashes, accompanied by deafening thunder. The light didn’t bring warmth, but rather an even more terrifying feeling.
Ruo Manni wasn’t scared at all. With Lin Kexin in tow, she lightly jumped over the wall, leaped across the 7-8 meter wide channel, and began running up the mountain.
Lin Kexin held onto Ruo Manni tightly, not because she was afraid of the dark or the lightning, but to prevent the fierce wind from sweeping her away. The wind was strong, likely at level 11 or 12.
“You really need to practice more martial arts. Why are you still just a Level 1 martial artist?” Ruo Manni remarked, feeling frustrated that Lin Kexin seemed so resistant to martial arts training.
“I’ve only been training for a year, okay? If I hadn’t been reborn into your body, rejuvenating it through martial arts training, you wouldn’t even be seeing this body anymore,” Lin Kexin retorted, not willing to back down.
The two sisters stealthily climbed the mountain in the stormy, pitch-black night, casually discussing soul swapping and ghosts, without a hint of fear.
Both of them had been ghosts in the past and found them completely harmless, like a puff of air. They couldn’t even manifest themselves, let alone pose a threat. They were no more dangerous than a mutated animal—what was there to fear?
They reached the top of the mountain as fast as they could. Ruo Manni wasn’t even winded, but Lin Kexin felt a bit tired from the exhausting wind and rain.
However, when Ruo Manni released her mech—at its smallest form, still around five or six meters tall—Lin Kexin eagerly ran over to touch the mech’s leg.
It wasn’t like she’d never seen a mech before. She even had a Level 1 Mech Manufacturer’s license, so there was no reason for her to be this excited.
Ruo Manni couldn’t be bothered to explain further. She grabbed Lin Kexin’s clothes, took a leap, and with a push from her right foot on the mech’s hand, she effortlessly leaped into the cockpit located at the mech’s head.
Two hours later, Hebrew Adam discovered that Ruo Manni had already quietly left the B City base. After exiting the gravity chamber, he expected to find her still at the Lin family’s house. He was about to send a message asking her to return, only to realize she was more than 2,000 kilometers away.
Upon seeing the speed, it was clear that she was using a mech to travel. Although with the strength of humans and mutated animals in this world, Ruo Manni was completely safe, Hebrew Adam began to feel concerned about her safety, remembering their discussion about the possible cause of the apocalypse in this world and the potential for a hidden mastermind behind it. He immediately called her light brain.
When Lin Kexin heard the faint “beep, beep, beep” from the light brain on Ruo Manni’s wrist, she felt a tightness in her chest. “We’ve been discovered.”
“As soon as they check my location on the light brain, they’ll realize I’ve already left the B City base,” Ruo Manni said calmly, not at all surprised that Hebrew Adam had found out.
She guessed that if Hebrew Adam hadn’t been in the training room, he would have noticed something strange the moment she left the B City base.
Ruo Manni opened the light screen, and on the other side, Hebrew Adam’s handsome face was tightly set. “What are you doing?”
“Looking for someone,” Ruo Manni replied honestly. “I’m not sure if the person is still there, and you can’t tell anyone else.”
Hebrew Adam furrowed his brows but didn’t speak. Ruo Manni could tell he was upset—he disapproved but didn’t know what to say.
“I’m just looking for someone. I won’t do anything dangerous, and I should be back at the B City base by tomorrow morning,” Ruo Manni gently reassured Hebrew Adam.
Both of them were always very independent. If Ruo Manni wanted to do something and it wasn’t too dangerous, Hebrew Adam wouldn’t interfere too much, and the same applied to Ruo Manni.
Once Ruo Manni assured him that she wouldn’t take unnecessary risks and would return to B City as quickly as possible, Hebrew Adam ended the call swiftly.
“That’s it? He didn’t get angry at all? I thought he’d make you go back immediately or chase after you,” Lin Kexin said.
Ruo Manni glanced at Lin Kexin. “That’s actually a sign that he doesn’t think much of me or trust my abilities. You haven’t forgotten these things just because you’ve been reborn for only a year, have you? People from the star system are like that—even if they are partners, they won’t interfere too much with each other’s actions.”
Lin Kexin sighed, “Although I’ve only been reborn for a year, I’ve already been in this world for over ten or twenty years.”
Ruo Manni immediately fell silent. Damn, if she hadn’t once been a ghost herself, she would have been scared by Lin Kexin’s words.
The co-pilot seat inside Ruo Manni’s mech was very comfortable, and the temperature inside was just right, making it perfect for a nap in the late night hours.
However, as they flew, heavy rain continued to pour outside, and Lin Kexin wasn’t in the mood to relax. With a furrowed brow, she said, “We’ve flown across the entire country, and it’s been raining like this all the way. Tomorrow, I’m afraid there will be widespread flooding in China. I wonder if it’s the same in other countries.”
“Can’t you check on your light brain?” Ruo Manni asked.
That’s when Lin Kexin remembered that she now had a light brain from the interstellar era. A few days ago, Hebrew Adam had launched five miniature reconnaissance satellites into Earth’s orbit, so she could check the global weather patterns anytime.
Lin Kexin looked at the global weather map and became even more worried. “This heavy rain is global. That apocalypse strategy post said it’s going to rain like this for another five or six days. I really don’t understand where all this rain is coming from.”
Upon hearing Lin Kexin’s words, Ruo Manni had a sudden thought. This definitely seemed unnatural. She quickly sent a text to Mina-Olli, asking her to check the rainwater for any unusual substances.
Mina-Olli quickly replied with an “OK.”
