Chapter 22: Poisonous Field
The Carriers had many ways to speed up the absorption of energy and the creation of the Rings. The safest way was to find a place with high energy density where they could quietly absorb energy through the Revolve.
However, all such safe places were already taken and controlled by someone else, and Orsire City was no exception to this rule. If Menir and Ethan had money, they could go to one of these places, but that was not the case.
They spent everything they had to gain their freedom and become the True Carriers. Now, they needed to start from scratch, and all they had were full circles and their experience.
However, even if a Carrier had money, not all of them preferred to simply gather energy for months. Some even considered such a long Revolve destructive, as it had a detrimental effect on their skills and connection to the world.
There were often cases when a Carrier accumulated energy for several years in a row, got a Ring in their Circle, became stronger, and died in their first battle.
Either balance or constant progress was necessary, but stagnation leading only to regression was not an option.
Many Carriers continued to search for resources with large amounts of energy and risk their lives, because they saw this as their only path to power.
For some, it was a choice, but for others, it was not.
On another evening, Ethan returned home, where he was instantly greeted by the aroma of freshly cooked food.
It had been thirty days since they decided to find the Essence of Rotten Forest, but they still hadn't set out on their adventure. As Menir wanted, they had to prepare.
It wasn't just about gathering information, training runs in the Rotten Forest, and practicing. They were both trying to earn as much money as possible. They didn't want to draw attention to themselves, so they combined hunting the Broken Monsters with part-time jobs at a construction site and a bakery.
The result of their hard work was now in Ethan's hands.
"Damn! We finally got them!"
He threw the bag on the table, as two green stones fell out, emitting a faint light from time to time.
Menir turned over her shoulder while her hands continued to stir the rice in the pan. She took on the role of cook because she simply couldn't live on bread, dried meat, and water like Ethan.
"Oh, we did that faster than I expected. Looks like someone was working hard, right?"
Ethan grinned. "Well, both of us. Hunting and doing regular work have become much easier. I can feel how much stronger, faster, and more resilient I've become. Not to mention my abilities!"
"Sure, that's the whole point, otherwise, monsters would be all over the world by now. Even so, they're physically superior to Carriers of the same rank."
"But not in abilities."
"That's right."
She scraped the edge of the pan with a spatula.
"Let's eat and discuss the plan. Our month of preparation must not be wasted."
...
Soon, the plates were empty, two large ones for Ethan and one for Menir, who finished later than him. His appetite was as big as his desire to fill the First Ring, but to do that, he needed a lot of energy.
He didn't spend much energy on the Revolve, because even if he devoted all his time to it, he wouldn't have reached 3%. First and foremost, they needed money.
Tap.
Menir picked up one of the green stones. They were somewhat similar to the Soul Stones, but only remotely. They cost much less and had a different purpose.
[Green Mist Stone (Product)
Circle: First
Once ordinary stones, filled with energy and boiled several times in a special brew to obtain anti-poison properties.]
"Excellent." Menir nodded. "That's what we need. It would be better if we could get our hands on something more powerful, but waiting any longer could be dangerous."
"Yeah, I'm surprised no one has found the Essence of Rotten Forest yet."
"It's not as easy as you think. Although you saw it for yourself. Even if you know where it is, it's not easy to get there."
Without further ado, they nodded and set off for the Rotten Forest the next day. They did this closer to nightfall so as not to encounter anyone on their way.
Sure, Koros and Diatra were their good allies, and over the past month, the bond between them only grew stronger. Ethan often turned to them for help with hunting, advice, and selling monster parts.
They were surprised at how strong Ethan became after defeating Black Horn and Konrad. Naturally, Ethan didn't reveal the real reason to them and simply attributed it all to his skills and experience.
He and Menir agreed not to tell anyone about what happened between them and how they became the True Carriers. Sure, some people knew about this method. Konrad was one of them, and considering that Roger told Ethan about it, many in the army were aware of this method.
'Hmm...' Ethan hummed thoughtfully, following Menir. 'Could it be that the old man knew I could become a Broken Carrier? After all, the chances of that are very high, and he instructed me to contact Roger specifically. Tsk, maybe I just got lucky, or... He took care of me for several years in advance?'
Becoming a True Carrier was not easy, even knowing the method, especially for Ethan. Usually, all one had to do was kill a suitable donor, but Ethan's donor was walking in front of him, alive and strong as ever.
Step.
Suddenly, Menir stopped. She didn't use the Blind Voyager for this because they'd been to this place many times, preparing for this moment.
Ahead of them lay a dense, green fog known as the Poisonous Field. It was a large part of the Rotten Forest, and it was impossible to get there without special protective equipment.
For this reason, few Carriers ventured here, and ironically, this was where the Essence was located.
Menir knew this for sure because no matter which way they approached, the Blind Voyager pointed to this very spot.
