Chapter 959: Tianmang Fortress!
Heading south.
Ling Feng released the Despicable Donkey, using its demon cloud as a means of transportation. In just five days, they entered the realm of the Sky Demon Forest.
Crossing this forest, they would reach the main camp of the Southern Army — Tianmang Fortress.
At Tianmang Fortress, roughly six million garrison troops were stationed, using marshes, miasmas, and mountain valleys as natural defenses to contend with the Demon Clan.
The entire fortress stretched for over a hundred miles, strictly guarding the boundary between the Demon Realm and the Human Clan, protecting the human civilians behind the fortress.
Of course, there was also a buffer zone between the fortress and the Demon Realm where the Demon Clan and Human Clan were both active all year round, each treating the other as prey.
Generally speaking, as long as neither side deployed powerhouses above the King-level, it wasn't considered a disruption of the balance between humans and demons.
Previously, due to the constraints of the Qiongqi Demon Emperor, the Southern Border Demon Domain had not seen any major conflicts for decades. Unfortunately, with the death of the Qiongqi Demon Emperor, the Silver Wolf Demon Emperor seized the territory that originally belonged to the Qiongqi Demon Emperor, and thus the war began.
The party spent about three more days traversing the great forest, and finally, a majestic fortress appeared before them.
At a place about a hundred miles outside the fortress, layers of checkpoints were set up, highly patrolled, making it very difficult to enter the fortress's domain.
Ling Feng and his party approached the checkpoint, and immediately a squad came forward to intercept them. Once Ling Feng showed the recommendation letter from the Heavenly Position Academy, these soldiers instantly showed several degrees more respect.
After all, those who could obtain a recommendation letter from the Four Great Universities to join the military were naturally elites among the academy, unlike these ordinary soldiers. These elites did not need to painfully endured from being a lowly soldier, once joining the army, they could at least become a Centurion.
Ling Feng's rank was already at a General's level, but without any battle merits, he was not part of any organization.
To put it simply, he was a solitary general, so, regardless of which of the Five Major Imperial Military Regions he chose to join, he was completely free.
"So, you're an elite student of the Heavenly Position Academy."
The little captain courteously saluted Ling Feng and his party, "Recently, things have been a bit unstable at the fortress, so everyone is feeling anxious. Please do not take offense."
"It doesn't matter."
Ling Feng smiled faintly, "The captain is just doing his duty. I'm new to the fortress; which General should I report to for new recruit registration?"
"General?"
The little captain was momentarily startled, then smiled and said, "New recruits reporting can't see any General. Forget it, give me your recommendation letter. I'll help find the Deputy Commander of our patrol camp. The Deputy Commander should be able to make arrangements for you."
"Many thanks then."
Ling Feng nodded, casually handed over the recommendation letter, and recalled how at the Sky-reaching Fortress, a General specifically came to entertain him — unlike now, being blocked by a mere commander at the gate.
And it was a Deputy Commander!
Indeed, although he had a high status in the north, few in the south knew of Ling Feng.
About seven and a half minutes later, a robust man dressed in black armor, with a broadsword at his waist, led a few guards leisurely toward Ling Feng and his group.
This man's face bore a fierce scar, looking intimidating even without anger, possessing considerable presence.
Finally, the Scarface Deputy Commander stood before Ling Feng's group, his gaze swept over them, and upon seeing Mu Qianxue and the other two women, his eyes noticeably gleamed, and he swallowed hard.
These soldiers in the barracks had rarely seen such beautiful women.
Although martial arts talent knows no gender, true female Martial Artists were relatively rare, especially in the military, where female martial artists were even scarcer. These soldiers hardly saw a woman on a daily basis, let alone such delicate beauties.
"Ahem, ahem..."
The Scarface Deputy Commander coughed lightly, holding Ling Feng's recommendation letter, grinning broadly as he said, "Kid, from the Heavenly Position Academy?"
"Correct." Ling Feng cupped his hand in salute, answering coolly.
"Heh, not bad, to have a recommendation letter from the Heavenly Position Academy." The Scarface Deputy Commander grinned, "So, did any of you notify any Generals in the barracks beforehand to come to meet you? I can help pass along the message if you like."
"Well..." Ling Feng frowned, thought for a moment, then shook his head, "I don't believe so."
"Didn't, huh?" The Scarface looked again at the rest of the group behind Ling Feng, "And the rest of you?"
"They haven't, either." Ling Feng frowned and asked, "Is that an issue, Lord Commander?"
"Nothing serious, just routine procedure."
The Scarface Commander laughed slyly, a glint of cunning flashing in his eyes, slowly saying, "There's always some understanding with recommendation letters, you know?"
In his view, without a General-level figure coming to meet them, it meant these people could be considered easy prey.
"Understanding?" Ling Feng was puzzled, "What understanding?"
"Of course, the transmission fee!"
The Scarface slapped the recommendation letter on his hand, "Think about it, everyone is busy these days. There are plenty of rookies from the Heavenly Position Academy, True Dragon Academy, Wenyuan Academy coming to enlist at our Tianmang Fortress. Our brothers can't just work for free, can they?"
Saying this, he rubbed his fingers together in front of Ling Feng, chuckling, "I, Zhao Dabiao, have always been fair. There are six of you here in total; I charge this amount per person, not too much, right?"
As he spoke, he raised his hand, showing five fingers.
This guy was quite sly, not stating a specific price, but rather gauging from expressions to see how much he could extract from these people.
Ling Feng raised an eyebrow and casually said, "Five hundred Elemental Crystals per person?"
"Yes, that's right, five hundred..."
Zhao Dabiao first laughed loudly, then froze, looking at Ling Feng in surprise, "You're saying, five... five hundred Elemental Crystals?"
"What's the matter, did I say too little, Lord Commander?" Ling Feng smirked, speaking softly.
Zhao Dabiao's eyelids twitched wildly, feeling as if his eyes were about to pop out.
Five hundred Elemental Crystals!
Goodness, his annual salary, when converted into Elemental Crystals, amounted to just one or two!
To know that the value of one Elemental Crystal equals a thousand top-grade Elemental Stones, while he, a mere Deputy Commander, had an annual salary of only one or two thousand top-grade Elemental Stones.
He originally thought that extorting five hundred top-grade Elemental Stones per person was pretty good, but who knew that they'd open with Elemental Crystals, and five hundred of them at that!
"Yes, why? Lord Commander?"
Ling Feng intriguingly glanced at Zhao Dabiao, tossed a bulging sack of Elemental Crystals casually into his hands, and chuckled, "Want to count them?"
Ling Feng hadn't specifically counted the number of Elemental Crystals in the sack. The quantity wasn't the key; what mattered was that Zhao Dabiao had turned completely dumbstruck.
He held the bag of Elemental Crystals with both hands, trembling all over.
While greedy, he wasn't exactly a fool.
Casually tossing such a bag of Elemental Crystals, could these people be average?
Their backing, family, were likely capable of terrifying him to the point of wetting himself!
Could he dare accept their Elemental Crystals?
As appealing as the Elemental Crystals were, they were a hot commodity!
