Chapter 8: Chapter 8
Lin Xinyi was no longer under suspicion.
No one could question him anymore.
His deductions were meticulous, each step grounded in forensic evidence from the body.
It wasn't the kind of wild, dramatic reasoning often seen in great detectives—more of a straightforward, factual report.
And such a report carried undeniable persuasive power.
"It seems Mr. Lin Xinyi is indeed not a suspect."
Inspector Megure finally accepted this conclusion.
His hostility faded, replaced by curiosity as he looked at Lin Xinyi.
"As you said, the victim drowned and remained in the water for over three hours before discovery."
"But that alone doesn't prove it was a suicide, does it?"
"More importantly, how did the body end up in pieces?"
"And how do we explain the wave of blood Kudo and Ran witnessed?"
Inspector Megure voiced the most crucial questions.
"We'll analyze the suicide angle last," Lin Xinyi replied calmly and methodically.
"First, let's discuss the cause of the dismemberment and the blood wave."
Hearing this, Shinichi Kudo immediately perked up.
This was the biggest puzzle troubling him!
Determining the cause and time of death was easy.
But how could a drowned body remain intact for three hours, only to suddenly break apart?
And why had he and Ran seen such a massive wave of blood just minutes before?
"The reason Kudo saw the blood wave is actually quite simple," Lin Xinyi said with a calm expression.
"Because the time of death and the time the body was dismembered… are completely different."
"Not just different—vastly different."
"I see it now!"
Shinichi Kudo's mind sparked, his eyes lighting up.
"The victim drowned three hours ago, but the body remained intact in the water during that time."
"Since the body wasn't disturbed, most of the blood remained inside."
"Then, just minutes ago, when Ran and I spotted the body…"
"Something caused it to break apart!"
"And during that process, the blood within was suddenly released into the river, creating the illusion of a fresh crime scene!"
"What?"
Inspector Megure was puzzled by this reasoning.
"But what caused the dismemberment?"
"Could there have been a second party involved—?"
He suddenly turned to Lin Xinyi.
"But Mr. Lin, you said there was no second party involved."
"So how did the victim 'dismember themselves' after death?"
This was the lingering mystery that stumped even Shinichi Kudo.
The room fell into absolute silence.
All eyes focused on Lin Xinyi.
He had unknowingly taken center stage, surpassing even the famed detective.
"The answer is simple."
Lin Xinyi spoke unhurriedly.
But he didn't reveal the answer outright.
It was his habit to present evidence first, then reach a conclusion.
"Take a look."
He stepped aside, giving everyone a clearer view of the grisly remains laid out on the plastic sheet.
"We have the head, torso, right upper limb, and left thigh."
"These body parts exhibit large, nearly parallel abrasions and lacerations on the face, chest, forearm, and thigh."
"Additionally, there is extensive skin detachment in these areas."
"Now, imagine—what kind of impact could cause these injuries all over the body?"
The crowd instinctively fell into thought.
Inspector Megure, with his extensive case experience, was the first to react.
"A traffic accident?"
"I've seen many victims of car crashes with similar injuries from scraping against the road or a vehicle."
"But wait… that doesn't make sense."
He frowned.
"Kudo deduced that the body remained in the water after death."
"There are no cars in the river—how could there be a traffic accident?"
"No, it's possible."
Shinichi Kudo spoke up.
Lin Xinyi's clues had guided him to the answer.
"A boat!"
"Just before Ran and I saw the body, several cruise ships passed through the area!"
"So the body must have collided with one of those boats?!"
"Exactly."
Lin Xinyi nodded.
"However, a simple collision wouldn't cause such severe injuries."
"Nor would it be enough to tear a body apart."
"Everyone, look here."
He pointed at the severed arm.
The shredded flesh and snapped bones were a gruesome sight, enough to make even the most hardened officers uneasy.
But Lin Xinyi remained composed.
"When a person is deliberately dismembered, the usual tools are knives, cleavers, or saws."
"Each of these tools leaves distinct marks."
"Knife wounds have uneven cuts with ragged edges from repeated slicing."
"Sawed bones display wavy, stepped grooves."
"Axes leave wide, wedge-shaped gashes."
"But this body's wounds are inconsistent."
"The head has clean cuts, resembling axe wounds."
"The torso and thighs have evenly spaced, curved incisions, as if made by a high-speed, repetitive slicing motion."
"Most importantly—"
"The severed limbs show clear signs of twisting, tearing, and crushing."
"The bones have smooth, repeated cut marks, and some show deep, shattered depressions."
Lin Xinyi's voice grew somber.
"No human could inflict these injuries manually."
"This level of force requires a high-speed, mechanical cutting instrument."
"Something akin to a meat grinder."
At that, everyone finally understood.
The wounds were too chaotic, too severe.
No human with ordinary tools could create such injuries.
The only possible culprit was—
"A propeller?"
Shinichi Kudo, having been guided step by step, finally reached the truth.
"The body was caught in a passing cruise ship's propeller!"
