Chapter 7: Chapter 7I'm coming, grandma
On the way to Grandma's houseTime: 11:00 a.m. — 7 hours before the impact.
John drove urgently through the destroyed streets, avoiding the main roads to stay out of the chaos in the city. He decided to take a shortcut through the woods, a secret path that led to the university campus. Despite being half-abandoned, that area had been selected for the construction of a football stadium, a project they had been discussing for years but never brought to fruition. But in that moment, the only thing that mattered was getting to his grandmother's house as quickly as possible.
As he turned onto an intersection near the back of the campus, he was forced to slam on the brakes. His heart seemed to stop as the scene unfolded before him.
Among the rubble of what had once been one of the walls of the under-construction stadium, a crowd had gathered. At first, John didn't know what to think. He noticed that many were rescuing others trapped under the debris. Damn, he thought. Those corrupt directors must have used poor-quality materials. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
As he moved through the crowd, his gaze shifted to a spot a little further away. Something inside him told him he needed to go closer. A dark premonition stirred in his stomach. And soon, to his dismay, he saw it.
A small hand protruded from the rubble. It was her.The girl he had saved that very morning from the truck accident.
Without wasting a second, he rushed toward the pile of debris. A dense cloud of dust engulfed him as he got closer, irritating his throat and blurring his vision, but he didn't care. He dropped to his knees and began removing debris with all his strength.
Each second felt like an eternity.Sweat ran down his forehead, mixing with the dust and the desperation. His arms burned, but he kept pushing, lifting, and moving chunks of concrete. Soon, some firefighters and civilians noticed the young man desperately lifting heavy blocks. They were shocked by the strength he showed, but when they saw what he was trying to rescue, their faces darkened.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the girl's body was uncovered.John felt a wave of coldness wash over him.The upper half of the girl was intact. Her face reflected a frozen terror, suspended in time. But her other half... simply wasn't there.A pool of dark blood spread beneath her torso. Her shattered organs and intestines spilled across the rubble, filling the air with the penetrating stench of iron and death.
John's world spun. A sudden dizziness attacked him, as if the ground beneath him were about to swallow him whole. And then, unable to stop himself, he vomited. He couldn't understand it. He couldn't process it.—Why...? he whispered, his voice cracking. Why did the girl have to die?For some reason, he had assumed the situation wasn't that bad. Sure, there had been a tremor, but had it really been that strong? If he hadn't been late to the university that morning, the girl would have been run over by that truck. Her death seemed inevitable. It was as if fate was mocking the fragility of life.
A heart-wrenching scream pulled him from his thoughts.—My baby! My precious baby!
John slowly turned and saw a young woman running toward him. Her eyes were swollen and red, her expression pure anguish. She collapsed next to her daughter's body, sobbing uncontrollably.
The scene was too raw.Seeing what remained of her daughter, she couldn't clearly remember everything that had happened that day. The long work hours had left her exhausted, and not being able to get up early had barely allowed her to take her daughter to school. After having a toasted piece of bread for breakfast, she saw her daughter, who always held a piece of bread in her mouth as they went to school, influenced by all the anime shows on TV. The image was funny, like one of those comical scenes that used to happen in the programs she loved.
However, soon something strange happened. As they crossed the street to get to the other side, something about her daughter seemed off. A blank stare took her by surprise. Without thinking, the girl turned and ran directly toward the truck. The mother, completely startled, couldn't react in time. The situation took her by surprise. But in an unexpected twist, a young man driving a car at high speed managed to prevent her daughter from being run over. The mother watched in terror as the other truck sped toward them. She screamed, and luckily, the young man quickly maneuvered, avoiding the crash.
Instantly, the young man veered toward the university, seemingly in a hurry. The mother couldn't even thank him. She walked toward her daughter, still trembling, and tried to comfort her. She thought about waiting a while before thanking the young man, and then…To hell with the job. That damn company only exploited the employees who were in need."Sweetheart, calm down... let's go get some ice cream. I'm not going to work today. Let's get some ice cream and a hamburger," she said, trying to calm her down. The girl looked at her, a little calmer, and replied: "Yes, Mom, I want an ice cream with soda and a chicken hamburger."
Pushing those thoughts away, the mother couldn't help but sob loudly.—If only... if only I had been a better mother...
John felt his heart tighten.—It's my fault... he murmured, feeling sick. If only I hadn't left her alone...
But the woman shook her head violently.—No, it's not your fault —she sobbed, her voice broken—. It's mine. That damn rush to get to work… I didn't pay enough attention to my daughter. Before everything happened, when I saw the truck, I noticed her blank expression. I'm not stupid, something was wrong. It was like she was lost, like something was pulling her... something, something...
—And then, when I left her at the campus... I tried to calm her down. I took her to eat while we waited to thank you for saving her from being run over. But, just like before, after eating, her expression was the same, empty, like she wasn't there. And then, suddenly, she ran off, for no apparent reason.I'm not stupid... I took her hand firmly, but with a strength that shouldn't belong to a little girl... she dragged me, and I had to let go.
Tears rolled uncontrollably down her face, like an unstoppable torrent.
John felt his hands tremble. No matter how hard he tried to find the words, he couldn't express them. He was angry, overwhelmed, sad... and cautious. What did that blank stare mean? What was happening to this woman and her daughter?
But seeing the woman, he couldn't help but embrace her. She was completely undone. The scene was tragic for anyone who looked at them: they thought they were a couple, given their youth, but they couldn't see the interaction between them, nor the figure watching them from the top of a building. A woman dressed in a tight white suit with red lines and gloves. A young woman with an albino appearance, pale skin, white hair, and red eyes. She smiled at the situation she was witnessing, a sadistic smile, almost like that of a psychopath.
John, however, could think of nothing but consoling the mother. The pain she felt was something he couldn't relieve with simple words. He wanted to do something, but time was not on his side. The situation seemed to worsen with every passing minute. His grandmother, his only family, needed him. During the call with her, he had felt something was wrong. He hadn't noticed it at the time, but after what he had just experienced, he couldn't ignore it anymore. The situation was far more dangerous than it seemed.
After about five minutes of hugging and trying to comfort her, the woman, seeing the worry in John's face, gently let go of him.—Go, son... go see your family. They need you.
John nodded, with a lump in his throat.—I'm sorry... I'm really sorry.
He walked away, still hearing the mother's sobs behind him. The scene had left him overwhelmed, but now he had a clear conviction: he wouldn't waste any more time.
At that exact moment, his phone rang. It was his grandmother. But before he could answer, the call was disconnected.
—Shit —he muttered, his heart pounding in his chest.
He sped up his motorcycle without a second thought. His grandmother, his only family, was in danger. He had to get there fast.
