After leaving the Afterlife, Alex Carter found a quiet corner and dialed Goro Takemura's number.
Soon, the connection was made, and the somewhat weary face of Goro Takemura appeared on the screen.
"Alex, do you have any news?"
Alex got straight to the point: "I got Hellman's escort route from Rogue, and I'm planning to intercept it."
Hearing this, Takemura was overjoyed.
"You're incredible! When do you need me there? I'll come to help."
"No need, I can handle this myself. Just wait for my update."
Alex declined Takemura's offer of assistance.
After all, this was the perfect opportunity for him and Panam Palmer to have a thrilling ride and build some camaraderie.
Having a third wheel like Takemura wouldn't do.
"Alex, I owe you a big one," Takemura said earnestly.
At the moment, he had nothing left.
If Alex wasn't helping him like this, he wouldn't know how to carry on.
"Alright, let's have a drink together later. I'll contact you when there's good news."
With that, Alex ended the call.
The system prompt sounded at the same time.
"Ding, mission accomplished. Reward: [Blacklight Virus Evolution Acceleration Card]*1"
Seeing the card in his inventory, Alex used it without hesitation.
However...
After a flash of red light, nothing seemed to happen.
No earth-shattering change.
No piercing pain.
Not even the slightest system prompt.
Alex was puzzled.
"That's it? Does this thing even do anything?"
Unable to figure out what had changed, Alex decided to focus on the task at hand.
This time, he dialed Panam's number.
"Who is this?"
"Hello, is this Panam? I'm Alex Carter."
"Alex Carter? Who? I don't know you. How did you get my number?"
Panam, in a foul mood, sounded impatient.
Alex didn't beat around the bush: "Rogue gave it to me."
Hearing this, Panam's anger flared even more: "Oh, really? Where does that old army witch want to send me now?"
"Cough, let's not talk about Rogue for now. I'm here to help you," Alex said.
"Thanks, but it's too late. You can tell Rogue to go as far away as possible!"
Clearly, Panam was extremely displeased with anything related to Rogue at the moment.
However, Alex, familiar with Panam's temperament, remained unfazed.
"Don't worry, I mean I can help you get your car and goods back."
"Are you interested? Or should I just leave?"
Panam fell silent at Alex's words.
After a brief struggle, she finally said in a deep voice: "There's a rail freight yard on Bonita Street, just near the city. We'll meet there."
"No problem."
After ending the call, Alex opened his inventory and took out a heavy backpack.
Inside were all the interesting items he had acquired from the Twilight Market the previous night!
With everything in place, Alex hurried to the agreed location with Panam...
...
Somewhere in Stoneridge Mountain, at the secret hideout of the Scavs.
"You mean, that guy took you all down with just a knife?"
A burly man with a fully cyberized upper head questioned the skinny man before him.
His prosthetic eyes glowed with a sinister red light.
He was the leader of the Scavs in the Badlands around Night City: Troy Acklow.
He was also Panam's number one nemesis.
Seeing the leader inquire, the skinny man nodded repeatedly: "Yes, boss, the kid doesn't have any visible cyberware, but he's unbelievably strong!"
"Did he say who he is? What's his plan?"
"No... No, he just said he'd visit the hideout in the next couple of days and that you should ask him yourself..." the skinny man stammered fearfully.
"Bang!!!"
With a gunshot, the skinny man fell to the ground, his head blossoming.
Acklow slowly holstered his pistol.
"Useless piece of trash, can't even handle something as simple as this."
After muttering a curse, he shouted to the Scav members behind him:
"Brothers, there's an idiot running wild on our turf, what should we do?"
"Take him down!"
"Should tie him to the back of a car and drag him to death."
"Hahaha, maybe sell him to the crew shooting Black Dream films."
"Anyway, let's catch him first and then decide."
...
As the clamor grew, a malicious smile crept onto Acklow's face.
Let me ask Acklow himself?
He'll regret ever suggesting that!
With the sound of revving engines and screeching tires, a large number of modified vehicles set off from the Scavs' camp.
They converged toward the cave near Stoneridge Mountain.
