Chapter 14: Mom,Why?
Sandra and Jamie's hearts raced as an oppressive atmosphere filled the air. The girl standing before them was Liu Xin—the girl they had been searching for—the one who had died three years ago. However, her appearance clearly indicated that the case was far from over.
"Who are you?" Jamie asked in a trembling but firm voice. She knew that the girl in front of her was not simple. Whatever she had gone through, it must be connected to her death in some way.
Liu Xin's eyes were filled with endless sorrow as she slowly spoke, "She..." Her voice trembled, "She is my mother. She killed me."
Sandra and Jamie exchanged a glance, confusion evident in their eyes. Up until now, Liu Xin's car accident had been believed to be an unfortunate incident with no further evidence suggesting foul play. But now, Liu Xin was saying her own mother was the one who caused her death.
"You said your mother..." Sandra murmured, "Can you tell us more?"
Liu Xin shook her head, her fear still palpable. "I always suspected her, but I never imagined she would actually harm me."
Suddenly, Liu Xin's form began to blur, as if blown away by the wind, like smoke dissipating into the air. Her figure gradually became transparent, then disappeared completely from view.
"No—" Jamie rushed forward, but her hand touched nothing. Liu Xin's figure was gone.
"What... what just happened?" Jamie stood frozen in place, her eyes vacant. "She vanished again."
Sandra furrowed her brows and turned to examine the surroundings. "No, she didn't completely leave. Did you notice? The place where she disappeared—there's something off about it." Sandra pointed to the spot where Liu Xin had vanished.
Jamie followed Sandra's gesture and saw a faint trail of blood on the grass. The bloodstain snaked its way down and disappeared into the roots of a large tree.
"This is..." Jamie stepped forward, crouching down. Her heartbeat quickened.
"This is what she left behind," Sandra said in a low voice. "This bloodstain seems to lead to a specific place. Let's follow it."
The two of them cautiously walked along the trail, passing through thick underbrush. The deepening shadows made the area seem especially eerie. After a few minutes, they stopped in front of an ancient tree.
"This is the cause of her death," Sandra whispered.
Jamie looked at the ground beneath the tree and saw a deep pit. There was nothing inside except for a broken, old bracelet that glimmered faintly.
"This... is Liu Xin's bracelet," Jamie murmured.
"I think this is the truth she wanted to reveal to us," Sandra said, squatting down and picking up the bracelet. Her expression was serious. "Liu Xin's death wasn't just a car accident. Her mother is likely the one who pushed her to her death, and she left us the final clue."
"Her mother..." Jamie clenched her fists. "What exactly is she hiding? What did her mother do?"
Sandra took a deep breath and stood up. "Let's go back and investigate her mother's background, see if there's something we don't know."
The two of them quietly left the woods, their minds heavy with the knowledge that this was just the beginning. The truth behind it all was far more complicated than they could have imagined, and it might be far more dangerous.
Back in the city, Sandra contacted the police and began researching Liu Xin's mother. She discovered that Liu Xin's mother was not a typical housewife, but had once been active in black market dealings. She had been investigated for a crime but had escaped prosecution due to a lack of evidence.
"I suspect that Liu Xin's death isn't just a family dispute, but part of a more complex conspiracy," Sandra pondered, flipping through the documents. "Her mother's background is far from ordinary, and she had connections to some suspicious individuals."
Jamie fell into deep thought. Liu Xin's death seemed closely tied to her family background, a connection that had been hidden under her mother's cover-up. Suddenly, she realized that the dream from that night was no coincidence. Perhaps Liu Xin had been trying to reach out to her from beyond, asking for help to uncover the terrifying truth behind her death.
"I think we can't wait any longer. We need to find Liu Xin's mother as soon as possible," Jamie said with determination. "She might know more secrets we haven't uncovered yet."
The two of them decided to visit Liu Xin's mother's house, ready to face whatever danger might lie ahead. What seemed like a simple car accident was now entangled in a dark and hidden world.
When they arrived at Liu Xin's mother's house, the door was slightly ajar, giving off an eerie feeling.
"This feels off," Sandra whispered.
They cautiously pushed the door open, and a cold wind rushed out. The lights inside flickered with an eerie glow, and the stillness of the air was so thick it was almost suffocating.
"I knew you would come," a voice suddenly echoed from inside the house.
They whipped around to see Liu Xin's mother standing in the center of the room, her face expressionless. The air seemed to freeze, as if all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room.
"You came to find out the truth about her death?" Liu Xin's mother's voice was low and icy. "But you will never know."
