Chapter 11: chapter twenty one and twenty two

Chapter 21: The Weight of Fate

(Barbara Gordon's POV – A Hero's Path)

---

Gotham City – The Reality of Crime

Barbara Gordon had spent her whole life watching Gotham devour people.

She had seen it in the criminals who thought they ran the city.

She had seen it in the cops who gave up fighting against corruption.

And worst of all, she had seen it in her father—Jim Gordon.

Her dad never said it outright, but she knew. She saw the exhaustion, the nights he didn't sleep, the way his hands gripped his coffee cup like it was the only thing holding him together.

She hated it.

And she refused to let Gotham break her too.

So, she trained.

Studied crime patterns. Learned how to fight. Built her own path.

Because Gotham didn't need more victims.

It needed people who could fight back.

---

Gotham Academy – The New Kid

Barbara leaned against her locker, her sharp blue eyes watching the new guy.

Joshua.

No last name. No records.

She had already checked.

And in Gotham? Someone with no paper trail was either extremely dangerous… or hiding something big.

Joshua was too confident.

He walked through the school like nothing could touch him. Like he wasn't just some new student thrown into Gotham Academy—but someone who had already seen things worse than this city.

Barbara had only ever seen one other person move like that.

Batman.

It made her suspicious.

And Barbara never ignored her instincts.

---

Barbara's Secret Investigation

She didn't make it obvious.

She didn't follow him or ask questions that would make him suspicious.

Instead, she did what she did best—worked in the shadows.

That meant:

Checking school records. Nothing before his enrollment date.

Digging into security footage. He moved too well for a normal kid.

Tracking his habits. He never looked lost, never hesitated—like he already knew Gotham better than most people who had lived there their whole lives.

It didn't add up.

And Barbara Gordon hated unsolved puzzles.

---

Training to Become More

Barbara had spent years preparing herself.

Martial arts. Parkour. Learning how to read people and anticipate their movements.

Her father would lose his mind if he knew how far she had gone.

But she couldn't just sit back and watch Gotham destroy more lives.

She refused to be just another bystander.

And now, with Joshua's arrival, she knew she had another mystery to solve.

Who was he?

Why was he here?

And most importantly—what was he hiding?

Barbara Gordon intended to find out.

And Joshua?

He would never see her coming.

Chapter 22: The Confrontation

(Barbara Gordon's POV – Investigating the New Kid)

---

A Mysterious New Student

Barbara Gordon had always been good at noticing things.

She wasn't the type to just let things go, especially when something—or someone—didn't add up.

And Joshua? He didn't add up.

No records. No family. No history before showing up at Gotham Academy.

That wasn't normal.

And if there was one thing Gotham had taught her, it was that when something wasn't normal, it usually meant trouble.

She had tried asking around. Teachers didn't seem to know much. Other students only knew what Joshua had told them—which wasn't much at all.

And the biggest red flag?

Bruce Wayne had adopted him.

That wasn't just strange. That was suspicious.

Why would Gotham's richest man randomly take in a teenager with no background?

What was Joshua hiding?

---

Digging for Answers

Barbara had spent the past week keeping an eye on him.

Joshua was… different.

He was stronger than he should be. Faster, too.

She had caught glimpses of him in gym class, moving with an unnatural ease, as if everything was effortless.

And he never seemed surprised by anything.

Most new students would at least be overwhelmed by Gotham Academy's elite social circles, the pressure of the city, or just the school itself.

Joshua? He acted like he had seen it all before.

Which meant either he had a past he wasn't talking about… or he was hiding something much bigger.

Barbara hated mysteries she couldn't solve.

And Joshua was quickly becoming the biggest one she'd ever come across.

---

The Confrontation

She decided to stop playing games.

If Joshua wasn't going to answer questions on his own, she'd force the issue.

She waited until after school, catching him alone as he walked toward the parking lot.

"Hey."

Joshua barely glanced at her. "Hey, Red."

Barbara crossed her arms. "I've got a question for you."

He stopped and turned, raising an eyebrow. "Yeah?"

Barbara didn't hesitate. "Who are you?"

Joshua smirked. "We're back to that, huh?"

She didn't let him dodge the question. "I did some digging. You don't have any records before last month. No birth certificate. No school records. Nothing. That's not normal."

Joshua shrugged. "Maybe I like being mysterious."

Barbara glared. "Or maybe you're hiding something."

Joshua tilted his head. "Let's say I am. What's it to you?"

Barbara stepped closer. "I don't trust people who show up out of nowhere and pretend they belong."

For a second, Joshua's smirk faltered.

Just for a second.

Then it was back. "Gotham's full of people like that."

Barbara's eyes narrowed. "Yeah. And most of them end up causing trouble."

She took another step forward. "Why did Bruce Wayne adopt you?"

That was the real question.

Bruce Wayne wasn't known for taking in random kids.

And yet, he had taken in Joshua.

Why?

Joshua exhaled. "Look, you're not gonna drop this, are you?"

Barbara shook her head. "Not a chance."

Joshua sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Fine. I'll make you a deal."

Barbara raised an eyebrow. "I'm listening."

Joshua grinned. "You figure it out, and I'll confirm if you're right."

Barbara frowned. "And if I'm wrong?"

His grin widened. "Then you drop it."

Barbara crossed her arms. "Fine. But I don't lose."

Joshua chuckled. "We'll see."

As he walked away, Barbara clenched her fists.

This wasn't over.

She didn't know who Joshua really was yet, but she was going to find out.

No matter what it took.
