Gotham's Nightmares

The city never slept.

Especially not tonight.

Alex stood on the rooftop of an abandoned warehouse near the docks, his gaze locked on the crumbling streets below. He wasn't alone. Gotham's underworld was shifting, reacting to his presence. The moment he stepped into this city, the moment Aeternum Industries grew, the vultures started circling.

And now?

The Joker had taken an interest.

Alex clenched his jaw. The flash drive from the previous night had confirmed it—he was being watched. The same cryptic symbol from the playing card had appeared in the files. Someone had been tracking his movements, collecting data, watching his every step.

Joker. Batman. LexCorp. The underworld.

And something else.

Something deeper.

A gust of wind cut through the air, sending the scent of rust and damp concrete through the night.

A single thought rang in his mind.

He had to move carefully.

The Setup

Evan's voice crackled through his earpiece. "You sure about this?"

Alex smirked. "When am I ever not?"

A dry chuckle. "Fair point. But you do realize you're walking into a potential war zone, right?"

"More like testing the waters."

"Testing the waters with psychopaths and capes. Great plan, boss."

Alex rolled his shoulders. "Trust me."

Evan sighed. "Fine. But don't get yourself killed. That'd be bad for business."

With that, Alex cut the feed and turned his attention back to the street below.

Joker's message had been clear—he wanted a meeting.

And in Gotham, ignoring an invitation from the Clown Prince of Crime?

That was the same as an open challenge.

---

The Joke's on You

At exactly midnight, Alex stepped into the abandoned amusement park near the docks.

The air was thick with the stench of rotting wood and rusting metal. The laughter of a long-broken animatronic clown echoed through the empty fairground, distorted and unsettling.

Then—

Slow applause.

Joker.

Dressed in his usual purple suit, a wide grin stretched across his pale face. His yellowed eyes gleamed with amusement as he leaned against a ruined carousel.

"Ah, Alex Kent! I was beginning to think you didn't like me!"

Alex kept his expression neutral. "I'm a busy man."

Joker's grin widened. "Oh, I know. CEO of that fancy new company, rubbing elbows with all the wrong people… and somehow, you're still walking around without a knife in your back. Impressive."

Alex took a slow step forward. "You wanted to talk. So talk."

Joker tilted his head. "Oh, but talking is so boring. I much prefer… surprises!"

With a snap of his fingers—gunfire erupted.

Alex dived behind a rusted popcorn stand as bullets tore through the air. Goons. At least six.

Joker cackled. "Come on, kiddo! You didn't think I'd just have a little chat, did you?"

Alex's mind raced. No powers. Just his tech.

Fine.

His hand flicked to his belt, pressing a concealed trigger.

Click.

A second later, smoke erupted from his jacket, thick and blinding.

Thermal vision engaged. His specially modified lenses lit up the area, revealing his attackers through the haze. Six men, all armed.

A flick of his wrist—miniature drones deployed, weaving through the smoke. Each one carried a non-lethal electric charge.

Zap. Zap. Zap.

Three men dropped instantly, convulsing.

The remaining three hesitated.

Alex didn't.

He surged forward, low and fast, slamming an electrified baton into the gut of the nearest thug. The man crumpled.

Two left.

One swung a knife. Alex caught his wrist, twisted—snap. The thug screamed, dropping the blade.

The last one hesitated.

Alex's voice was cold. "Run."

He did.

As the smoke cleared, Alex turned back to Joker—

Only to find a gun aimed right at his head.

Joker grinned. "Not bad, kid. Not bad at all."

Alex didn't flinch. "You've made your point."

Joker waggled the gun. "Oh, I haven't even started. But you? You're fun. Different. I like that."

Then, without warning—

A batarang sliced through the air.

Clang!

Joker's gun went flying.

A shadow dropped from the rafters, cape billowing.

Batman.

Joker scowled. "Batsy, you always ruin my fun!"

Batman's voice was low, dangerous. "Your fun ends now."

Joker sighed dramatically. "Fine, fine. But can't we at least—"

Flashbang.

A sudden explosion of light and sound.

By the time the flash cleared—Joker was gone.

Batman turned to Alex, eyes unreadable beneath the cowl. "You were reckless."

Alex exhaled. "I handled it."

Batman stepped closer, looming. "Joker doesn't play games. If he's interested in you, you're already in danger."

Alex met his gaze, unyielding. "I can take care of myself."

Batman's silence stretched. Then—a flicker of something.

Recognition.

He knew.

Maybe not the full truth, but enough to suspect that Alex Kent wasn't just some young businessman in over his head.

Finally, Batman turned. "Stay out of this city's underworld, Kent."

Then, just like that—he was gone.

Alex stood alone, the weight of the night pressing down on him.

Joker was interested.

Batman was watching.

And whatever came next?

He had to be ready.

Because this was just the beginning.
