Chapter 299: Finale
Above her, dozens of spears, sleek and starlit, materialized. Each one was wreathed in elemental flame. [Astral Spear Volley], upgraded and amplified, now called [Meteor Lance Barrage], answered gravity with contempt as she slammed her palms down.
The spears hit as one, both of the spiders she'd already injured.
The impact was thunderous. The first few pierced through chitin like wet parchment, and the rest followed, erupting in a chain of elemental bursts that blew the pair of monsters into charred ruins. The corpses collapsed into the webbed floor with a wet crunch, steaming in multiple colors.
Nyx exhaled slowly, the pink glow in her eyes dimming just enough to show her smirk. "I feel awake."
"Nyx, I need the last three! Help the girls!" Kaiden shouted. If Nyx assisted in their slaying, his requirement wouldn't be filled. He needed to kill them alone while in Wrath Stance.
Kaiden felt conflicted about telling Nyx this, but in the end, he decided her new and empowered self was better used to assist against the boss monster instead of its minions.
He could hold these three back by himself and complete the requirement at the same time. At the same time, Nyx could breathe some fresh air into the boss battle using her new spells. Right now, she was probably their strongest member, so it was best she focused on the most dangerous enemy.
"Roger!" she chirped, clearly having an adrenaline rush due to the might of her upgraded powers.
Kaiden launched himself back into the fray, gauntlet morphing fluidly between shield, claw, and whip as he charged the remaining spiders. Sparks flew and acidic spit hissed as he carved through their ranks, each strike precise, brutal, and unrelenting. Wrath Stance lent him a rhythm of violence.
At the same time, Nyx began observing the chaos. Luna's Stormblade streaked in white-blue arcs, frantic but deadly, slicing through every opportunity the Countess created. Aria's moonlit spells danced with precision. Her calm, strategic approach was the perfect contrast to the storm around her. Bastet's golden solar flames erupted in disciplined torrents, zoning the Countess and forcing her to retreat from open attacks.
Nyx's sharp eyes took it all in while stroking her chin thoughtfully. "This boss monster… she's upgraded herself again while I was snoozing. It's not hard to see how."
The tether connecting the Countess to the Heart was not at all a subtle, invisible, and intangible line. It had solidified into a tangible, pulsing cord of energy, stretching through the space between them.
A smirk crept across her face. 'Space exists in three dimensions, doesn't it? She's left herself exposed in space, doing so probably lets her draw more power from the overgrown parasite… but she exposed herself before the Space Valkyrie.'
"I can't let my enemy get away with such disrespect."
Nyx extended her hands, palms glowing with telekinetic force. With a deep breath, she reached out, probing the tether with her mind and energy. Her consciousness expanded, brushing along the link, feeling its flow of life essence and power. It was strong, chaotic, and feeding the Countess faster than they could damage her.
But it was interactible… If one had the tools.
With precise control, Nyx began to manipulate the tether. She twisted it, tugged at it, bending its flow. The Countess screamed as her power furnace faltered mid-transfer.
Bile-black corruption began receding over the Heart's flesh, giving it back some of the taken power.
The physical tether writhed in space, now under Nyx's control. Each pulse that had been feeding the Countess was rerouted, delayed, and disrupted. The monster faltered as her "permanent fuel" was interrupted.
Nyx's grin widened, the thrill of dominance over space itself lighting her eyes. "Let's see how you like being cut off from your lifeline… You creepy fucking monster… " she whispered, allowing herself a rather uncharacteristic curse. She was not streaming; no one would hear it… So she thought it was okay. Her pristine image would not be ruined.
The battlefield was hers to manipulate. Her hands moved in synchronized motions, twisting, pulling, constraining the glowing tether. The Countess thrashed, screeching in fury, but Nyx's telekinetic grip held firm. She could feel the Heart monster's lifeforce pulsing through the tether like a conduit, and each pulse she disrupted sapped a fraction of the Countess's stolen vitality.
At the same time, the other three girls pressed the assault.
Kaiden, having finished the job of minion slaying, hovered high above the battlefield once again with his crimson glider cutting through the wind. He surveyed the fight below.
A wild grin crept across his face. He tightened his gauntleted fist. Now, it wouldn't be a lance.
The Blood Monarch's Gauntlet shivered and shifted, veins pulsing violently as molten bloodsteel flowed outward. The gauntlet strained under Kaiden's will, bones and sinew in his arm screaming in protest as it shaped and expanded, forming a colossal hammerhead that dwarfed even him. The massive weapon hovered before him.
Kaiden gritted his teeth, forcing himself to bear the weight. He was pushing the gauntlet beyond what it had been made to do, but this was no ordinary fight. He couldn't allow another magical power to come from the boss monster.
With a determined mind, he dropped from the glider, plummeting through the air as the hammer's momentum built with him.
"[Doom Strike]!!!"
With a deafening roar, he slammed it down onto the Countess's entire body. The impact cracked the stone, shattered the webbing, and sent a shockwave rippling through the room.
The monster's body flattened under the unimaginable force. But Kaiden had learned his lesson. He didn't allow a single moment to pass before the gauntlet reshaped the hammer into dual curved daggers.
He grabbed onto their hilts and struck again and again, carving vicious arcs into the flattened body. Every blow targeted the Countess's vitals.
Blood and corrupted ichor erupted, painting the chamber.
Above it all, Kaiden sensed the shift: the Countess's will faltering, her lifeforce finally being claimed. The crimson sigils on his gauntlet flared as the final pulse of her sin, the corrupt, gluttonous essence that had driven her entire existence, rushed toward him.
A rush of triumph coursed through him.
▸ Trial Three – Conquer the Sinner: Kill a Sin-Wielder and consume their sin.
Kaiden exhaled as the last vestiges of her power dissipated. At long last, the Countess's monstrous body lay dead, and her sin, the final prize, was his.
It was time to take it.
