Chapter 413: Kaito Kuroba: "You Are Seriously Breaking the Rules!?"

"Hmph, with such a huge airship, only three people were assigned to cover the broadcast this time — that's just ridiculous!"
"Ah... sorry, it's mainly because of that incident. The bureau is swamped right now."
Director Mizukawa Masaki forced a smile as Jirokichi Suzuki approached with a displeased look.
That incident referred to the bacteria stolen by the Red Siamese Cats—today was the last day, and both police and media were on high alert.
Curious,
Jirokichi Suzuki snorted coldly.
"By the way, what exactly do those criminals want to do with the bacteria?" Cameraman Ishimoto Junpei asked with a serious expression.
"Yeah, isn't it almost hopeless once infected?"
Reporter Nishitani Kasumi added.
The two began discussing the matter, emphasizing that the bacteria spread via droplets and describing the symptoms after infection.
"Maybe they intend to use the bacteria for blackmail, or perhaps their true goal lies hidden behind the threat of the bacteria. But since nothing has happened yet, who knows?" Hayashi Yoshiki said calmly.
"What's there to fear? Whatever this so-called killer bacteria is..."
Earlier, freelance reporter Fujioka Takamichi, who had applied to board the airship, swaggered over, wearing a cocky smile:
"I've been to many places overrun by pathogens, and I'm still kicking. Humans are way stronger than bacteria."
His last remark was directed at the children onboard.
Kasumi and the others had specifically mentioned that kids were more vulnerable to infection, so the children looked worried.
"That's true!" Mitsuhiko raised a smiling face.
But Fujioka suddenly changed tone:
"But kids like you might drop dead in an instant."
"Saying such rude things doesn't make you funny, Mr. Fujioka."
"OK, OK."
Facing Hayashi Yoshiki's cold tone, Fujioka raised both hands sheepishly.
Hayashi Yoshiki ignored him.
Jirokichi Suzuki laughed heartily, reassuring everyone that up here in the sky, no earthly bacteria could harm them. They could relax completely.
Then he proudly led everyone to the observation deck of the airship to check out the jewel he was using as the bet in his challenge against Kaito Kid.
To get there, they had to take a sightseeing elevator.
According to Jirokichi Suzuki's proud introduction, the "Suzuki Issei" airship was 246 meters long and 42.2 meters in maximum diameter—equivalent to a large building on the ground.
At the top-level observation deck near the exhibit of the jewel "Sky Lady," Ginzo Nakamori was already on guard with his team.
Respectfully,
"Officer Nakamori, good to see you again."
"Ah, Mr. Hayashi, you came too!"
The man who had twice managed to bring Kaito Kid to justice was visibly excited, shaking Hayashi Yoshiki's hand with great enthusiasm.
Then he turned to Jirokichi Suzuki and openly expressed distrust of the airship's defense system—until Jirokichi showed off the expensive defense mechanisms and traps he had installed.
Kogoro Mouri got punched in the face by the mischievous Genta Kojima.
He stood up dizzy, holding his injured nose and lighting a cigarette—though he was warned to smoke only in the smoking room.
Reporter Fujioka invited him:
"Mr. Mouri, want to go have a smoke together?"
"No thanks, I think I'll head back to my room first—I'm losing all sense of direction right now."
Kogoro Mouri waved him off and walked away.
Ran watched him worriedly:
"Is Dad okay?"
"Probably just the fear of heights affecting him, but Uncle Mouri's physique is pretty tough."
"Yeah, that makes sense."
Feeling reassured, Ran relaxed.
After all, being injected with so many sedatives and still lively, even developing resistance, meant Kogoro Mouri's constitution might be valuable for research.
After admiring the jewel, everyone returned to the lower-level restaurant.
"Yoshiki, have you decided how to catch Kaito Kid yet?" Sonoko asked, grinning.
"Since he hasn't appeared yet, I haven't thought it through."
Hayashi Yoshiki replied with a smile.
Just then, a waiter started handing out cake.
He first served the children's table, then came to Hayashi Yoshiki and the others.
Hayashi Yoshiki looked at him as if noticing something and said,
"Sir."
"Yes? What is it?"
"Here."
Hayashi Yoshiki pointed to his cheek, indicating something was stuck there.
The waiter didn't suspect anything. Thinking to put down the cake first and wipe it off, he was surprised when Hayashi Yoshiki reached out and ripped off the mask from his face.
Kaito Kuroba suddenly jerked his head back and shuddered when he saw Hayashi Yoshiki's smiling face.
"Kaito Kid!?"
"Shinichi Kudo?!"
Ran and Sonoko called out separately.
Both instinctively stood up, and their shouts immediately drew everyone's attention.
Jirokichi Suzuki, happily sipping tea, jumped up and pointed at the stunned Kaito Kuroba:
"Lupin, get him!"
"Woof!"
Lupin was Jirokichi Suzuki's dog. As soon as he got the command, he barked and charged at Kaito Kuroba, who scrambled to dodge.
He started running circles around the dining tables, glaring bitterly at Hayashi Yoshiki:
"You're seriously breaking the rules!?"
Hayashi Yoshiki smiled, shaking the human-skin mask in his hand:
"That's just because Ran was sitting next to me."
Ran, not understanding why this had anything to do with her, blushed deeply.
"I just thought Kaito Kid might have snuck into the airship already, so I tried to grab the face of the person next to me—and got the jackpot."
"Who would believe your nonsense!"
"Woof!"
During Lupin's next pounce, Kaito Kuroba jumped onto a table in panic—but then caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye of a little kid aiming a watch dial at him.
He didn't dare ignore it and quickly darted elsewhere.
Just then, Ginzo Nakamori entered the restaurant with his team, obviously having already heard the commotion.
He immediately shouted,
"Kaito Kid!"
This isn't good!
Last time, Kaito Kuroba barely got away pretending to be Shinichi Kudo.
If Nakamori saw his face this time, even the most foolish would start to doubt him!
Not wanting his childhood friend's father to fully suspect him, Kaito Kuroba quickly changed clothes before Ginzo Nakamori could see his face—and threw down a smoke bomb.
Thick smoke rapidly spread.
"Bastard! Don't think you can keep escaping with smoke bombs every time!"
Ginzo Nakamori and his team plunged headfirst into the smoke without hesitation.
