Chapter 66: Chapter 66
Rika sat comfortably in a chair near the fire, her eyes flickering with curiosity as she glanced at Young, who was floating above her, the orb she communicated through gently hovering in the air. Young's quiet voice broke the stillness of the night.
"Rika… do you think I'm enough for him? For Naruto?"
Rika's smile softened, her tone gentle yet confident as she spoke. "Of course, you are. You have your own way of showing him love, and that's what matters most. You bring something unique to the table, Young."
Young's orb flickered slightly, reflecting her unease. "But compared to everyone else… I feel so... out of place. I'm not like them. They all have something special, something tangible, you know? And I'm just... here. Watching from a distance, supporting."
Rika leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms as she thoughtfully observed the orb. "I get it. You feel like you're missing something because you're not physically with him all the time, like we are." She sighed, her expression turning reflective. "But you know, Naruto loves us for who we are. Not because we fit some mold. He loves you for what you bring to his life, even if it's not something everyone can see right away."
Young's orb seemed to shift slightly, her presence a little more vibrant now. "But what if I'm not enough? What if he wants someone stronger, someone who's physically with him, fighting by his side?"
Rika chuckled, shaking her head. "Trust me, Young. Naruto loves everyone around him for different reasons. He appreciates strength, but not just in the physical sense. He cares about the heart, the mind, and how we support each other. You're already giving him something invaluable by being his support. That matters more than you realize."
There was a pause as Young absorbed Rika's words. "But do you think he'll always care for me as much as he cares for you, or Hikari, or any of the others?"
Rika's smile grew tender, her voice calm yet reassuring. "I can't speak for the future, but what I can tell you is this—he cares for you in his own way, Young. It might not always look the same as it does for me or Hikari, but that doesn't make it any less real. You just have to be patient and trust in what you have with him. You're already part of our family, and we'll all have each other's backs. He'll always make sure you feel valued."
Young's orb shifted, and she let out a small sigh, her voice quieter now. "Thank you, Rika. I just… I just want to feel like I truly belong with him."
Rika nodded, her smile growing more playful now. "You already do, trust me. Plus, I'm sure Naruto loves that you're so concerned about him. That's part of the reason he fell for you. Just give it time, and you'll see how strong your bond can be."
Young's orb flickered one last time before it settled into a softer glow, a sense of calm washing over her. "I'll try. I want to be everything he needs... I want to be someone he can rely on."
"You already are, Young." Rika gave a wink before adding with a teasing smile, "And hey, I'm sure Naruto wouldn't mind you being even closer... if you want that."
Young's orb fluttered as though it were laughing, and the two shared a quiet moment of understanding. It wasn't about being perfect, or being exactly like the others—it was about what they each brought to Naruto's life, and how they each made him feel loved and supported.
The days spent in the forest had been full of growth and discovery. The team had learned a lot, pushing themselves and their Digimon to new heights. The forest was a place of challenge, but also beauty, with winding trails, towering trees, and glistening streams. However, after spending nearly a week there, everyone began to feel the monotony of the same scenery and recurring enemies. Their Digimon, too, were growing restless. They needed fresh data, new environments, and challenges to continue improving. So, the decision was made: it was time to leave and explore a new region.
As they packed up their camp, Naruto glanced at Rika, who was seated on a fallen log, her gaze focused on the distant horizon. She had been spending more time with him recently, and Naruto couldn't help but notice the subtle changes in their dynamic. She was always near him, whether it was for a quiet conversation or a playful moment. Sometimes, she'd find an excuse to sit on his lap, leaning into him with a teasing smile, her arms wrapped around him as if claiming her place by his side. At first, Naruto had thought it was just a passing phase, but after these two days, it had become a familiar and comfortable part of their routine.
Rika noticed his gaze and smirked, her eyes twinkling mischievously. "You're getting used to this, aren't you?"
Naruto chuckled, his arms crossed as he leaned against a tree. "I guess I am. It's hard not to with you always sticking to me like glue."
Rika's lips curved into a playful grin as she stood up, walking over to him with a confident sway in her step. "Well, that's the point. If you're going to keep me around, you'll have to get used to it."
Naruto raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything, letting the moment pass as she casually draped herself across his back. He'd gotten used to her playful affection, and while it was clear that she had become a regular presence in his life, there was something endearing about how she made sure to stay close. He wasn't sure whether it was her way of claiming him or just enjoying his company, but either way, he didn't mind.
As the team got ready to leave the forest, Rika had taken the time to have a private conversation with Young. The two of them had talked about the complexities of their shared relationship with Naruto, and Rika had come to understand Young's insecurities. Despite her initial concerns, Young wasn't as distant as she seemed. Rika could see the care and devotion she had for Naruto, and after a lighthearted chat, Rika had accepted her role in this growing family. She didn't see Young as a threat—after all, she was still number one in Naruto's heart, and she planned to keep it that way.
With a soft sigh, Rika slid off Naruto's back, brushing off the dirt from her clothes. She wasn't about to give up her place in his life, but she was learning to share, slowly but surely. After all, there was something comforting about being with someone who valued her affection, and Naruto, in his own way, seemed to have accepted it.
"Let's get going," Rika said, her voice light, but with a hint of satisfaction. "There's a whole new world out there to explore."
Naruto smiled, appreciating her enthusiasm. "Sounds like a plan. You've already gotten your fill of the forest, huh?"
Rika nodded, slipping her hand into his as they walked towards the others. "Definitely. It's time for a change of scenery."
And as they ventured out of the forest, Naruto couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Despite all the chaos, the battles, and the complicated relationships, things felt... right.
Over the course of their time together, Rika had grown more and more comfortable with her place beside Naruto. It had become routine for her to casually drape herself over him in various ways, whether it was sitting on his lap during downtime or clinging to his back as they walked. She made no effort to hide the fact that she enjoyed being close to him, and Naruto—while amused by her persistence—had started to notice how her behavior was subtly influencing him.
At first, he had tried to keep his distance, unsure whether he wanted to encourage such behavior. But as the days passed and Rika continued her affectionate yet playful acts, he couldn't deny that he was beginning to enjoy the closeness. Sometimes, when they sat together by the fire, Rika would climb into his lap without asking, settling there as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Naruto, for all his teasing, couldn't bring himself to push her away.
He found himself adjusting to it, as though it was just another part of his daily life. She had a way of making herself comfortable wherever they were—always near him, always finding excuses to touch him, whether it was resting a hand on his shoulder or leaning against him when they were talking. She was slowly conditioning him to expect her presence, and he, despite his initial resistance, had begun to accept it.
Naruto, being the observant person he was, noticed the pattern. The more she stayed close, the more he found himself anticipating her touches, looking for her presence in the moments when they weren't together. It was almost as if her physical proximity had become an unspoken part of his routine—something he began to crave without even realizing it.
He chuckled to himself one evening as Rika settled herself on his lap again. She had done this so many times now that it had become second nature. The fire crackled beside them, casting a soft glow over their faces. Naruto glanced down at her, a playful smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
"You're really making yourself at home, huh?" he teased, one hand resting casually on her waist.
Rika tilted her head back and gave him a knowing smirk. "You don't mind, do you? You've gotten used to it by now."
Naruto shrugged nonchalantly, though his eyes were filled with affection. "Maybe I have. I'm just curious to see how long it'll take before I can't function without you around."
Her smile softened, and she leaned back against his chest, her head resting lightly against his shoulder. "Well, if you're worried about that, I can assure you that I'm not going anywhere."
There was a comfort in her words, in the way she made it clear that she was in it for the long haul. And as Naruto relaxed into the moment, feeling the warmth of her presence against him, he realized that he didn't mind at all. In fact, he found himself enjoying it more than he expected.
She had won. Without him even realizing it, she had slowly and carefully woven herself into the fabric of his life, and now, her absence seemed almost... unnatural. He didn't have to think about it too much anymore—Rika was simply a part of him, like a missing piece he hadn't known he needed until it was right there.
And for Naruto, that was just fine.
