Chapter 75: Chapter 75
As the group stood in the soft glow of the setting sun, Kara was about to take off into the sky, her wings fluttering with the intention of leaving. Cho, noticing this, quickly dashed forward and caught her hand before she could ascend.
"Kara, are you leaving? I thought we were going to have a feast," Cho asked, her voice filled with a mix of disappointment and concern.
Kara turned with a playful grin, the corners of her lips lifting in amusement. "Of course not, we are having a feast, and the monkey can sleep through it." She gave a quick glance at the still unconscious Son, who had been knocked out earlier by her swift kick, his body still in a heap on the ground.
Kiara, standing beside them, smirked slightly. "You know me, Kara. I do not indulge in such things, and Cho isn't as well."
"Master!" Cho exclaimed, looking up at Kiara with wide, pleading eyes. Cho had a serious weakness when it came to food, always eating more than she should, and the consequences had been apparent more than once.
Kiara placed a gentle hand on Cho's head, her tone soft but firm, like a mother chiding her child. "You decided to follow me, Cho. You need to learn restraint. You can't just eat all the time. How many times have you gotten blindsided or trapped because of it?"
Cho pouted, her lips pulling into a childish frown, but she didn't argue. Instead, she clung to Kiara's leg, her eyes desperately searching between Kara and Kiara, silently begging for mercy. She wanted to complain, to make a case for a proper meal, but she knew better than to push her mentor too far.
Kara chuckled, watching the scene with amusement. "Well, let's have a picnic. Nothing big, just a simple meal." She glanced at Kiara, her expression shifting to something a little more serious. There were hints of concern in her eyes, traces of unspoken tension that seemed to linger in the air. Something wasn't right. She could feel it in the pit of her stomach—there were signs that something terrible was on the horizon, and even the top circles of power seemed to be worried. Drasil's name had been murmured in hushed tones more than once lately. A threat from Drasil was never good news. The consequences were always catastrophic, and people had died in droves whenever he made a move.
Kiara met Kara's gaze for a moment, a silent understanding passing between them before she turned her attention back to Cho. "We'll have something simple," she said, her voice softening as she ruffled Cho's hair, giving her a rare moment of comfort.
Kara nodded, then looked over at Naruto, who had been standing off to the side. The wind ruffled his hair as he turned to face them. "I need to prepare for my journey, so farewell, my friends," Naruto said, his voice calm but carrying an undercurrent of determination. He had been quietly observing, but his mind was clearly occupied with other matters. He didn't want to intrude on the moment of camaraderie that his friends were sharing, so he chose to step away, needing time to clear his head. There were things that weighed heavily on his mind, and he knew it was best to sort through them alone.
The group nodded in understanding, offering him their goodbyes. Kara, Kiara, and Cho all gave him their farewells, their expressions a mix of warmth and concern. Despite the lightheartedness, there was an unspoken sense of foreboding, and Naruto couldn't help but feel it, too. With a final wave, he turned and walked off, his silhouette quickly swallowed by the horizon as he disappeared into the distance.
Naruto meditated alone in a secluded spot, deep within his thoughts. The world around him was peaceful, yet his mind swirled with the weight of what lay ahead. Tomorrow would be a pivotal day. He had already decided that he would go on this journey, but the silence in his heart gnawed at him. His decision to keep the coming threat from his team left him feeling like a selfish bastard, but he knew that telling them would only raise unnecessary alarms. He couldn't risk their reactions. They might inadvertently reveal too much, tip off those who were already watching. So, he kept his thoughts to himself, steeling his mind for the uncertainty ahead.
His team, innocent and unaware of the danger, would follow him tomorrow. He couldn't help but wonder if he was leading them into harm's way as bait. They would volunteer if asked, but that didn't make it right. It wasn't something he liked to admit, but he couldn't shake the discomfort he felt at the thought. These moments, when his leadership was tested, made him question if he truly wanted to shoulder that responsibility. But those doubts were fleeting. He'd made his decision. There was no time for second-guessing.
He had already taken all the necessary precautions. Kiara, the ever-vigilant mentor, would have told him if there was a grave risk. And yet, the nagging feeling in his gut didn't go away. Still, he chose to push it aside, knowing that there was no turning back now. He couldn't afford to falter.
The next day came with the usual routine. The team, unsuspecting of the impending doom, carried on as though everything were normal. The familiar camaraderie between them brought Naruto a small comfort, but it wasn't enough to dispel the unease he carried. As they prepared to fly to the Upside Down Pyramid Desert—also known as Server Desert—Naruto watched the horizon, the distant, looming desert region full of secrets. The desert was an immense expanse, dwarfing even the largest of continents in size. It spanned across four powerful empires—the Human Empire, the Metal Empire, the Fire Empire, and the Dragon Empire—and was a place where danger and power coexisted in harmony. It was the land where powerful Digimon ruled, and where the strongest among them had backing from the surrounding empires.
Among the most formidable of the desert's rulers were Ebemon, Blastmon, Dinorexmon, PileVolcamon, and Pharaohmon—each with their own unique powers and alliances. Ebemon, a cyborg Digimon, had taken control of vast areas of the desert through a dark network of cables that ran beneath the surface, helping him maintain dominance. He was an enigmatic figure, created through an unholy fusion of Vademon's alien genes, and had a singular purpose: domination. Ebemon's network was vast, and through it, he controlled one of the largest underground systems in the Digital World, making him a constant threat.
There was a Colosseum located in the desert, and was one of many structures and areas in the desert controlled by the Ebemon or his underlings.
One of his underlings was Etemon.
Blastmon, the heavy-hitting mineral Digimon, was a figure of incredible power. Clad in crystal armor that regenerated when broken, his body was a slow-moving fortress. Working in tandem with the Human Empire, he had a vested interest in ensuring that no large-scale attacks on the human territories took place. His reputation for being indestructible made him a force to be reckoned with.
Then there was Dinorexmon, the terrifying "King of Terror," a carnivorous dinosaur Digimon whose ferocity in battle was unmatched. Loyal to the Dragon Empire and its enigmatic ruler, Megidramon, Dinorexmon's brutal nature and power were unmatched among other Dinosaur Digimons. Its talons were fearsome weapons, and its predatory instincts were honed through countless battles.
The dragon Empire was ruled by Megidramon and was supported by Azulongmon, Magnadramon and Goldramon. All of the four great dragons were in one place.
It was an anomaly that only few could answer as Megidramon represented the Digital Hazard itself. It was a force of destruction like Apocalymon, just on a lesser scale.
Its power would be usually sealed by King Drasil, but the dragon was moving around with full power and its sanity was intact unlike its usual state.
With Megidramon as the leader, other dragons had no problem submitting since none of them could act prideful in front of the four great dragons.
PileVolcamon, the volcano-clad cyborg Digimon, was another powerhouse of the region, working with the Fire Empire. With immense strength and destructive force, PileVolcamon had honed its skills in all combat sports, turning its massive body into a devastating weapon capable of bringing down entire armies.
And, of course, there was Pharaohmon—the ancient, ghostly Digimon who controlled vast regions of the desert. Once the ruler of a thriving empire, Pharaohmon now ruled over a much smaller territory, but its reign was still potent. As a Mummy Digimon that had evolved into something far more powerful, Pharaohmon's golden form shone with an otherworldly glow, marking its authority over the ruins and ancient sites scattered across the Digital World.
Naruto's team flew over the vast expanse of the desert, each member unaware of the gravity of the situation. As they soared high above the dunes, Naruto couldn't help but feel the weight of the desert below them. It was a region rife with power, a volatile powder keg waiting for the right spark to ignite it.
Naruto's team arrived at the vast region of the Desert, a stretch of land more than 2,000 miles away from the safety of Dawn City. They were now at the edge of the Upside Down Pyramid Desert, an area that fell within the domain of Amara's Magma Empire. This desert was a stark contrast to the lush landscapes of the cities they had traveled from—its sprawling sands stretched endlessly under the scorching sun, creating an eerie, hostile atmosphere. It was a region where the boundary between life and death was dangerously thin, and evil forces could easily manipulate the environment for their own dark purposes.
For centuries, this desert had been the hunting ground for Tamers seeking to test their strength, but many had fallen prey to the dangers lurking within. Despite the treacherous nature of the land, it still held a certain allure for those seeking to prove themselves, as well as those with more sinister intentions.
Naruto and his team, understanding the gravity of their mission, remained on the outer edge of the desert, staying within the bounds of the human-controlled territory. Although Blastmon, a powerful and influential Digimon allied with the human side, was an ally of sorts, the surrounding wild Digimon were far from friendly. The team prepared for battle, ready to face the untamed creatures that roamed the desert, including Rookie and Champion-level Digimon.
The temperatures in the desert were brutal, well over 200 degrees Celsius even on the outer edges. The deeper they went, the more intense the heat became. The central region was a place of constant fire, where the air shimmered with the unbearable heat, making it a place where only the strongest survived. Despite the oppressive conditions, Naruto's team had no trouble navigating the terrain. Their training had prepared them for these types of extreme environments, and the soft, shifting sands were no obstacle.
Throughout the day, they encountered several wild Digimon, including Candlemon, Agumon, Black Agumon, Gearmon, Bombmon, and even Meramon. These were mostly Rookie-level Digimon, but Naruto's team didn't hesitate to take down the occasional Champion-level threat as well. Their team had grown in strength, and the added power from Naruto's enhancements helped ensure that the fights were quick and efficient. Naruto himself didn't engage in the battles seriously; his focus was elsewhere, always vigilant, keeping an eye on the landscape for any sign of the impending attack.
TiaLudomon, his trusted Digimon partner, was safely stored within his Digivice, while Mai and Rory were trailing behind, ensuring their safety and supporting the group in their own ways. Although Naruto couldn't sense their presence, he knew they were there, watching over the team from the shadows.
As Naruto, Takato, Henry, and Rika made their way deeper into the Desert Server, the oppressive heat and endless stretches of sand didn't seem to bother them as much. They'd all seen their fair share of weird and dangerous places in the Digital World, but this desert felt different—not dangerous, just… boring.
Takato, trying to wipe the sweat off his forehead for the hundredth time, grumbled under his breath. "I swear, this sand gets everywhere. It's like it has a personal vendetta against me."
Rika glanced over at him, raising an eyebrow. "You're complaining about sand? You're a rookie in the desert. Maybe next time you can try not acting like you just fell into a pile of dirt."
Naruto laughed, hands behind his head as he strolled forward, looking unfazed by the scorching heat. "Yeah, Takato, it's not like it's going to bite you. You've got to be tougher than that. We're out here in the Digital World, not some beach vacation."
Henry, who was doing his best to maintain his usual calm demeanor, smirked. "It's only a matter of time before you start looking like a raisin from all the sun, Takato."
"Hey! I'm not that bad!" Takato shot back with a grin. "Besides, I'd rather deal with the heat than whatever weird things we'll face later. This place is too quiet. You know what they say, 'No noise, more boring.'"
Rika chuckled, glancing around at the empty desert. "True. There's no challenge here. I mean, we've only come across Rookie Digimon so far. It's almost... too easy."
"Yeah," Naruto said with a lazy stretch. "Rookie Digimon are like training wheels. I was hoping for something a little more exciting. These guys aren't even trying to be a challenge."
Takato smiled to himself. "Maybe we're too strong now? We've grown a lot since we started this journey."
Henry, shaking his head, added, "Or maybe the Digital World is just giving us a break. We've earned it."
"Ha! I'm not going to get cocky about it," Naruto warned with a grin. "The Digital World's got a way of turning things upside down when you least expect it."
Rika nudged him playfully. "That's your problem, Naruto. You can't just enjoy the calm without waiting for the storm. You're always looking for the next big fight."
Naruto grinned. "Hey, it's in my blood! You know me, I'm always ready for action. But right now, I'm enjoying the peace... even if it's a little too quiet."
Takato stopped for a moment, looking out across the endless sand. "I guess we can take a breather. It's not like anything's going to happen right now. We've got time to just... relax."
Henry nodded, glancing down at his Digivice. "You're right. Just soak in the moment for a bit before whatever chaos the Digital World decides to throw at us next."
Rika crossed her arms and leaned back, a smirk on her lips. "I can't believe you guys are actually talking about relaxing in a desert. That's a new one. Next thing I know, we'll be setting up camp and roasting marshmallows."
Takato brightened up at the idea. "Wait, actually, that doesn't sound too bad. Anyone got marshmallows?"
Naruto snickered. "Takato, we're not roasting marshmallows in the desert. Though, I'd totally go for a break and a snack. What do you think, Henry? You got any snacks?"
Henry's face lit up in a half-grin. "Not in this heat, unfortunately. But maybe we can find something at the next town."
Rika raised an eyebrow. "Next town? Are we just going to walk through this desert aimlessly, hoping to bump into something?"
Naruto gave her a casual shrug. "It's the Digital World. The next 'town' could be just around the corner—or it could be a million miles away. But we've got to keep moving. Can't just stand around here all day."
Takato stretched his arms out with a dramatic yawn. "Well, I vote for moving. But only if there's a nice shady spot. I don't think I can take much more of this heat."
Rika rolled her eyes. "You guys are hopeless."
The group chuckled as they continued walking, the banter keeping their spirits light. Though the desert was still vast and hot, the camaraderie among them made the journey feel just a little bit easier to bear.
Time passed without incident, and as the day wore on, the team decided to take a break for lunch. The tension from the journey eased momentarily as they sat near the edge of a small oasis, grateful for the respite from the heat. Laughter and conversation filled the air as they enjoyed their meal, but just as they were beginning to relax, a sandstorm suddenly appeared on the horizon.
While sandstorms weren't uncommon in the desert, this one's rapid and unusual appearance immediately raised Naruto's suspicions. The storm came from the human side of the region, an area that was supposed to be safe, and it seemed to be pushing them away from their secure position. Without wasting a moment, Naruto gave the command, and the team swiftly retreated in the opposite direction, running towards the oasis. They knew the storm was no natural occurrence—it had been artificially created, likely as a diversion or trap.
The storm followed them for a short while but eventually stopped at the oasis, not continuing its pursuit. For a brief moment, all seemed calm again. The oasis, with its cool water and sheltered environment, was a temporary sanctuary where the team could catch their breath.
But Naruto's instincts, honed through years of experience, told him that this peace was fleeting.
As the dust of the storm settled, a figure emerged from the haze, walking directly toward their group. Naruto's eyes narrowed, and an involuntary sigh escaped his lips. There, standing before them, was Kankuro—the very same Kankuro from his past, now wearing the iconic Akatsuki cloak. The sight was unmistakable, and Naruto's heart sank as he realized what this meant. Kankuro, now a member of the notorious Akatsuki, was here on a mission—and it was clear that he wasn't here for a friendly chat.
Without saying a word, Kankuro raised his hand, summoning his Digimon partner into the fray.
