Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Why Am I Always the One Getting Hurt?
Dan Heng stepped into the main hall and saw Gu Yuena sitting by the table, gently touching the bouquet of flowers he had given her.
The bouquet had been placed in a vase by Gu Yuena. Though the pink flowers weren't particularly rare or precious, she had positioned them in the most conspicuous spot in the hall, replacing a large cluster of expensive flowers.
"Big Sis! Big Sis! Old... Brother-in-law is back!" Zi Ji followed closely behind Dan Heng, bouncing around like an energetic husky.
She pointed at Dan Heng, already eager to see her master teach this lecherous man a lesson.
Of course, the best outcome would be for her master to issue a command, allowing her to use her position as the "little sister-in-law" to properly discipline this old pervert!
Gu Yuena lifted her gaze to glance at Dan Heng, her expression void of emotion.
She opened her mouth slightly but said nothing, continuing to stroke the flower petals.
Watching this scene, Dan Heng thought to himself: She's definitely angry... Is it because I went to that kind of place?
After returning to the library, he had specifically asked his colleagues about their opinions on a husband visiting such establishments. The response was nearly unanimous—terrible!
Especially for someone who already had a beautiful young wife at home—doing such a thing was simply deserving of divine punishment.
His colleagues even looked at him with an expression of utter disbelief.
They all said that even if it was just a misunderstanding, he should still apologize to his wife.
If the roles were reversed and his wife was chatting and laughing with another man, would he feel okay about it?
Dan Heng thought about it. Back then, he did feel a bit uncomfortable.
He couldn't quite figure out what that emotion was. After all, it hadn't been long since he had truly begun accepting himself.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have gone there," Dan Heng said.
Gu Yuena's ears twitched slightly, the corners of her lips subtly lifting. But she quickly restrained herself. The change was fleeting, as if it had never happened.
Dan Heng, however, didn't miss it. Seeing this, he breathed a quiet sigh of relief.
So... does this mean it's over?
"Where? Where? Old... Brother-in-law, where exactly did you go? Why did you make my sister angry? Speak the truth! As her little sister, I won't let this slide so easily!"
Zi Ji grabbed Dan Heng by the collar, her violet eyes filled with excitement rather than anger.
Dan Heng was startled by her. This mentally unstable little sister-in-law was truly beyond comprehension.
"Get out!" Gu Yuena commanded sharply.
Zi Ji immediately grinned and shouted, "Big Sis is fed up with you! Brother-in-law, you should just leave! If you want her forgiveness, spend the night outside reflecting on your actions!"
She grabbed Dan Heng's arm, intending to drag him out of the hall.
Dan Heng couldn't be bothered to argue with her and was about to comply.
Zi Ji was grinning so wide that her mouth nearly reached her ears. After so many days, she could finally take revenge on this old pervert!
Just as she was reveling in her excitement, an inexplicable chill suddenly enveloped her.
"???"
The blazing flames of joy were instantly doused by a bucket of cold water!
Zi Ji slowly lifted her head and met a pair of cold, emotionless eyes.
It was the warning sign of her master's fury!
Surely, this was directed at Dan Heng, the old pervert, right?
Unless... had her master's vision been off lately? Otherwise, why was she looking at her?
Zi Ji scooted to the side, but that icy gaze followed her movements.
"..." Zi Ji blinked and hesitantly pointed at Dan Heng, wanting to say, Master, you're looking at the wrong person!
"Get out, Zi Ji!" Gu Yuena said coldly.
"..." Zi Ji shuddered. There was no room for wishful thinking now.
She shot Dan Heng a furious glare. It must be this old pervert dragging me down with him!
Lowering her head, Zi Ji fled from the hall in disgrace.
Dan Heng turned back to look at Gu Yuena. The icy demeanor she had just shown toward Zi Ji vanished instantly, replaced by her usual emotionless yet breathtakingly beautiful face, like an untouchable celestial being.
"..."
Wasn't she supposed to have calmed down?
Even her aura no longer carried any of the negative emotions from before.
Then why is she still giving me the cold shoulder?
Dan Heng placed the food container he had brought on the table. After some thought, he said, "The chicken soup was very good. I drank it all. Thank you..."
This was something the librarian had specifically instructed him to say. There were many other details he could have added, but Dan Heng found it too troublesome and stuck to the essentials.
Gu Yuena quickly glanced at the food container and blurted out, "Really?"
Dan Heng nodded. He fixed his gaze on Gu Yuena's face—she had just smiled for a moment, right?
Gu Yuena suddenly turned away, holding the vase in her hands as she spoke softly:
"Thinking about it now, what right do I have to question my husband? Whatever my husband chooses to do is his freedom. Our relationship... perhaps in my husband's eyes, it's just a formality..."
Her voice carried a trace of sorrow, hesitant and lingering.
As if she was waiting for Dan Heng to respond.
Maybe for him to say something like "It's not a sham marriage. Let's be a real couple from now on."
Dan Heng looked at her slender back and confirmed once more—she no longer carried any negative emotions.
Now, there was only a positive and uplifting energy.
Something he still found difficult to understand.
Since there was no problem anymore, he turned and walked towards the bedroom.
Gu Yuena had been nervously and expectantly awaiting his response.
If he said what she wanted to hear, she was even considering turning around and throwing herself into his arms.
Would that be too bold? Too passionate?
But then again, they were husband and wife!
Just as she was lost in thought, she heard the sound of Dan Heng's footsteps... gradually moving farther away.
"???"
Gu Yuena turned her head and saw only Dan Heng's retreating figure as he entered the bedroom.
The smile on her face instantly froze. The words she had been preparing to say were all swallowed back down.
At this moment, Zi Ji, who had been peeking from the doorway, was curious to see how things would unfold.
Gu Yuena said coldly, "Zi Ji! You're not allowed to eat dinner tonight!"
"Ah?" Zi Ji was completely dumbfounded.
She hadn't even done anything today! Why was she the one being punished?!
That night.
Gu Yuena decided that she wouldn't speak to Dan Heng at all. Before he could go to bed, she went to find Zi Ji.
Zi Ji, who had missed dinner, was in the kitchen, devouring the leftover food.
When Gu Yuena entered, Zi Ji was startled and quickly swallowed a mouthful of food, nearly choking herself.
Thump, thump, thump... Gu Yuena patted Zi Ji's back, helping her breathe.
"Sis... I was hungry," Zi Ji said pitifully.
Gu Yuena pointed at the stove and said, "You noticed it too, right? That girl called Xiao Wu from Shrek Academy—she's a transformed soul beast. When they go to the Star Dou Forest, I'll follow along to take a look."
The soul beasts' forces were too weak now. Even as a former God King, Gu Yuena had to personally recruit them one by one.
Although Xiao Wu had taken human form, she was still bound to her soul beast identity.
Zi Ji lifted the pot lid, and a wave of white steam rose up.
Inside was a pot of reheated food. Zi Ji's eyes immediately welled up with tears of gratitude. "Sister..."
