Chapter 40: Douluo: Things You Live Long Enough to See [41]
The Blood Sea Demon Flood Dragon, with the bearing of a sovereign, looked down disdainfully at the Mandrake Snake with its vertical scarlet pupils. If it had been a beast of equal cultivation, it might have dared to fight to the death—but as a mere snake, the Mandrake didn't even have the will to resist.
Its serpentine body trembled as it slithered backward. The once proud, high-lifted head now lowered itself to the ground, not daring to meet those blood-red vertical pupils.
ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!
With a deafening roar, the Blood Sea Demon Flood Dragon descended through the blood-colored clouds. Its four claws, like an eagle catching a snake, easily clamped down on the Mandrake Snake's vital point.
Even as death approached, the pitiful snake never dared to resist. It allowed the flood dragon to crush its heart. A purple spirit ring floated upward.
The proud flood dragon soared once more through the blood sea before reluctantly gazing at the two embracing figures. In its vertical pupils flashed a surprisingly humanlike longing.
It relished the feeling of being alive, but the soul power of the two was already exhausted and could no longer sustain it. It could only helplessly revert to being their martial souls, awaiting the next time they performed their spirit fusion technique.
As their martial souls returned, the pair collapsed to the ground, exhausted. The flood dragon clearly had its own will—otherwise, it wouldn't have been so powerful.
Panting heavily, it took a while before the two noticed they were still holding hands. Neither said a word—they simply accepted the reality of it.
Each tried to convince themselves: holding hands was just to recover soul power more efficiently.
A moment later, after their soul power had mostly recovered, they finally let go, red-faced. Chaotianxiang sat cross-legged by the spirit ring without saying thanks, even though she considered it.
Meng Shu, on the other hand, stood watch as he used his blade to hack off the Mandrake Snake's head. He planned to bring it back and burn it in front of his father's grave.
In the skies above…
Cheng Ying put away the Phantom from his hand into his storage tool, wearing an "I knew it" expression.
"I knew it from the beginning—how could a mere Mandrake Snake be their match?"
Dugu Bo and Tang Chen were speechless.
Could you at least put away the rocket launcher slung over your back before saying that? You're kitted out like you're about to fight a full-scale war—how could anyone take you seriously?
To make matters worse, that rocket launcher was actually extremely dangerous. The explosives Dugu Bo had concocted were highly unstable—it could go off with the slightest bump. Thankfully, Cheng Ying was thick-skinned enough to carry it around on his back without issue.
"Time to head home! There are six of us now! Hurry up and take in three more disciples, and we can play Werewolf at home!" the Ice Empress said excitedly.
Even if they couldn't play Werewolf, they could now easily get a full Mahjong table. Before this, Dugu Bo was always holed up in his lab, and it had been ages since she last played…
Cheng Ying: "…"
He kind of regretted it now. After inventing poker, he'd been stupid enough to give it away for free. Given the lack of entertainment in Douluo Continent, games like these were bound to become wildly popular.
In the future, games like Werewolf, Hearthstone, or even Three Kingdoms Kill would definitely need to have monetization. And if someone said Three Kingdoms Kill didn't fit this world's lore—easy, just rebrand it Douluo Kill!
Outside the Star Dou Great Forest
Meng Shu flew out at high speed on his Dragon Staff, riding it like a broomstick from Hogwarts. Seated sideways in front of him was Chaotianxiang. This was his newly acquired fourth spirit ability—extremely fast but difficult to control, making it easy to crash into trees. Still, if mastered, he could absolutely be a gold-level Seeker in Quidditch.
"Lucky you! Scored a beauty that easily!" Cheng Ying whistled from outside the forest, drawing their attention.
Chaotianxiang immediately blushed and tried to jump off Meng Shu's arms. She had only agreed to be held because she wanted to experience the thrill of high-speed flight. Now that they'd been caught by Cheng Ying, she wanted to crawl into a hole.
But Meng Shu had no intention of letting her down. He flew a circle around Cheng Ying before landing.
"Why say I got lucky? Can't it just be my overwhelming charm? One move and she was swooning…" Out of the forest, Meng Shu was back to his usual clownish self.
"Hah! Swooned over a captor? Spare us! Go take a look in the mirror," Cheng Ying said, tossing him a small round mirror.
Meng Shu reflexively caught it and glanced at himself.
Crack—
The mirror shattered…
Meng Shu: "…"
To Cheng Ying, the mirror wasn't expensive—it was just a joke. But the scene stunned Chaotianxiang.
Soul masters may be rich, but mirrors were rare. Especially Cheng Ying's silver mirror—crystal clear and far better than the typical dull ones.
Even broken, her eyes lit up as she snatched it and tucked it into her pocket like a treasure.
"It's all your fault! You're so ugly, even the mirror broke!"
Meng Shu watched as she tucked the shattered mirror away like it was a precious gem. His face stiffened as he whispered in her ear,
"Uh… it's actually not worth much. Teacher told me it's just refined sand. If you want one, just ask him. Apparently, Teacher's wife has a full-body mirror as tall as a person…"
Meng Shu felt it was better to explain now than let her embarrass herself later. After all, he'd asked the same dumb questions himself once.
"Let's go! The car's up ahead!" Cheng Ying didn't try to show off and thus missed Chaotianxiang's little moment. He'd actually spent the previous days modifying the vehicle.
Their five-seater was now too small. Fortunately, the clockwork-powered car was easy to modify—like stacking blocks. A longer transmission rod and an extra row of seats turned it into a six-seater.
Everyone fit easily. Cheng Ying and the Ice Empress took driver and passenger seats. Meng Shu and Chaotianxiang sat in the back, leaving Tang Chen squished in the second row…
Next to him was Dugu Bo. While everyone else had their girlfriends, he had… this guy. His face turned oddly purple.
The wind-up car roared to life, raising a trail of dust as it sped off toward the horizon. For Cheng Ying, this trip to the Star Dou Forest had been a huge success.
Obtained one Dragon Bro, with a bonus Snake Lady.
Once he recruited seven disciples, he was totally founding a Shrek Academy of his own—to walk a path others couldn't follow!
The vehicle entered Heaven Dou City. With no animals pulling it, the car drew many onlookers. But once they saw the "Earth" logo and the word "Tech" on it, their surprise faded.
Only items made by the Great Sage bore that strange globe symbol and anything made by the Great Sage, no matter how wondrous, was never shocking.
Chaotianxiang had visited Heaven Dou City as a child. Compared to then, the city was now several times more prosperous. Even the roads had become spotless. In the distance, she saw a towering building, piercing the sky amidst scaffolding and green netting…
