Chapter 529: Eve of Breakthrough
--
Within Cedric's Inner World, colorful threads swam amongst the ocean of dark gold...
The more of these colorful threads appeared, the more lifelike his inner world became, and the deeper his connection was to it. These colorful threads represent the embryo of concept laws incubating within his Inner World; the scene was reminiscent of the birth of the Primeval Scarlet Dust Realm.
Only a couple dozen miles were left before his Inner World occupied the whole 999 miles of expansion. Once it reaches that point, it would signify that Cedric has reached the limits of the 3rd Stage of Void Refinement. He would then need to prepare to absorb gross amounts of Void Energy once more.
It is headache for sure, especially considering their current situation.
Obviously, the current vat of void energies the camp preserves cannot be used by him since it's for the participants of the Ancient Chaos Alpha Project. Also, all the entrances leading to the void and even the holes in the Scarlet Division Wall were temporarily sealed by him. Sure, he had a way to peel the seal to allow some void energy to leak, which he could then absorb, but the real problem was the Void Prince.
With the Void Prince's innate connection with the Void, any carelessness on Cedric's part will be met with dire consequences, so he had to be really careful. And even if I was careful, things could still go wrong. After all, the Void Prince wasn't stupid. The time he chose to absorb more void energy might just coincide with the Void Prince's other attempt at invasion. By then, even though he couldn't be blamed, Cedric will still be responsible for it.
Alas, this was the price for walking the Ancient Chaos Path, one that Cedric had to face anyway. Fortunately, he's not alone on this path. The Border Patrol Office was right behind him.
Speaking of the Border Patrol, it's been almost a year since the beginning of the Ancient Chaos Alpha's launch...
The wave of development hasn't stopped at all. Even since surviving the invasion of the Void Prince, all personnel of the office became even more determined to not have a repeat of that disaster.
Though Cedric presented a way forward and had secured funding for his project. The office didn't pin all of their hopes on it. They didn't feel comfortable entrusting such a heavy burden to a single person and hoping that he would prevail. That's unfair and unreasonable.
That's why, on top of funding Cedric's project, they are also developing other means to protect the realm, as it was their sworn duty.
All manner of weapons are being invented and developed over time. Most of it was created to be specifically harmful towards Void Creatures. Cedric's invention of the runic formation that not only uses the void as a material to enhance the things they already have served as a great inspiration to many, even though most of them would forget it almost as soon as they learned of it.
The phenomenon didn't deter most of those who learned of it. If anything, it sparked their interest even more; some even expressed their desire to learn more about it. However, because the project Ancient Chaos is still in its alpha development, not many were given access to this information just yet. And even those who did have to exchange something of equal value before they were allowed in.
Still, Cedric's means had opened up many avenues of development for the Border Patrol Office. All of it is being used to better protect the realm against the looming threat beyond the walls.
As for the 'volunteers' of the Societal Office, they've been whipped to obedience by the Border Patrol Office.
The majority of those who came from there were people who greatly valued their lives. Each one yearned to live the full extent of their lifespan and evolve into cosmic beings despite their chances. To those that didn't have the potential to aim for that level, at the very least, they could pave the way for their descendants by forming connections and allies they could use in the future.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that people from the Societal Office, even the beginners, are all well-versed in weaving through social situations. Some are even more frightening than others.
Unfortunately for them, they're not within the Alliance right now. All their schemes and plans are rendered useless around these parts.
Here, they were worked to the bone. They are constantly reminded that disobedience means treason, and treason means death. Their lives are not as meaningful as their duties. It is cruel, savage, and merciless, but it did straighten them up.
There had been no less than hundreds of field executions since their arrival. Every scheme, every plan, every subtle interference they did to manipulate their fellow soldiers that would affect the operation of the office was discovered, revealed, and punished in the shortest possible time. No trial was held, and no chances were given. They were warned and they didn't listen so they will be punished, it's as simple as that.

It was this cutthroat and merciless efficiency that cowed the majority of these fools to obedience. Once again, these people value their lives more than anything else. Their efforts to disrupt the operation of the office was for their personal gain and security. They just wanted to return to the alliance in one piece and never return here.
Contrary to their belief, the Border Patrol Office didn't want to do this to them either. Everybody who works here might have a few screws loose, but they're not complete lunatics. They wouldn't issue mass executions just because of small issues.
That said, the Border Patrol Office has a bottom line, one that cannot be tested. It just so happened that these fools became used to thinking that they're above the law, so they have to be put in their proper place.
The Border Patrol Office understood that only a handful of people would stay here to uphold their duty. Life Evolvers are all selfish people deep down. At the end of the day, personal interest is what matters the most. The honor and morality of one's career come later. They are very familiar with this; that's why they tempt people to join by offering access to their coffers.
The office will always be understaffed; they've long since accepted this. The sudden influx of people was nice, and truthfully, they didn't want to resort to killings to prove their point. Alas, these people won't cry unless they were shown coffins. Unfortunately for them, the Border Patrol Office isn't shy to show them some. It'd be rude not to, considering how hard these people pushed them.
All in all, the field executions have calmed down by now. It's a pity that the body count had to reach the hundreds before they learned their lessons, but it's better late than never.

'Almost...' Cedric released a breath of turbid air, concluding his introspection.
In another month at most, he will reach the limits of the 3rd Stage of Void Refinement. With such little time left, he better start planning for his future progress.
Cedric left a notice to his superiors, telling them that he would visit the holes of the Scarlet Division Wall he sealed. Just like he did before, this was his first choice of action to absorb more void energy.
He would go there, peel off the seal to allow some void energy to leak into the realm, which he would then absorb.
Of course, it wasn't that simple. Cedric had his own considerations too. He had to be really careful, or else his actions would be discovered by the Void, and that would cause a great disaster once more.
Usually, at least one Chancellor or a Paragon will accompany him to do this, and it's usually the Wise Dragon Emperor who does. But recently, everybody's been occupied.
Cedric himself was relatively free. Despite being the director of the Ancient Chaos Alpha project, he doesn't really have much to do other than observing their progress, which is going well so far since nobody had died or been crippled yet.
Since everybody else was occupied, Cedric decided to go out alone. At his current level of strength, there are very few people who could give him actual trouble within the realm so there's no real need for escorts.
He already left a notice anyway, and he had enough privileges to mobilize on his own, so he didn't waste time and began his journey.
Because the patched holes were too many, it might take him more than a month to search for one that has the least risk of opening for his purpose. But that's fine, Cedric can afford to slow down for now. Additionally, his guinea pigs shouldn't need him soon, so he had time for himself.
Following the trackers he left on the seals, he began his journey right away, starting with the ones closest to the camp.
It didn't take long before he arrived at the first marker, and as soon as he sank his consciousness to the seal, his jaws unconsciously tightened.
Without wasting too much time here, he flew towards the next nearest seal to confirm whether his discovery was accurate or not.
