chapter 50
Episode 49 Reason
Episode 49 Reason
“So, what on earth happened?”
The Vice President’s office.
After a stint in the hospital following the end of the Act 1 boss battle.
Not long after summer break had begun, I came to find Chiron.
It was to ascertain the truth of what the former Headmistress, Athena, had told me.
*You’ll be taking on a lecture in the second semester. Have a curriculum in mind. That’s all.*
‘A lecture, huh.’
No matter how I hear it, it sounds like they want me to be an instructor.
I couldn’t figure out how I ended up in this situation, so I had come to see Chiron.
Chiron’s answer to my question was simple.
“It’s exactly as it sounds.”
“…….”
“You will be in charge of a lecture in the second semester. You can decide the lecture name, but it would be good if it’s something related to ‘Battle Mage’.”
Since the content is intended to teach battle mages.
Chiron explained it that way.
I click my tongue after hearing the explanation.
I had a feeling, but still.
Well, I guess if I were to give a lecture at Olympia, that’s the only thing it could be.
‘Battle Mage.’
My own unique concept, neither knight nor mage.
The world is already buzzing about it.
Since it’s a concept that draws so much attention, they probably want me to teach it.
“Is there a demand?”
“Of course. You don’t know it, but there have been subtle hints coming into the academy. Asking if they could learn about Battle Mages.”
“……Well, now.”
Hearing that kind of talk so directly is a bit embarrassing.
But it’s not something I can just brush off.
If you’re really going to make me lecture, I at least need to figure out the format.
“Are there any restrictions on the format? You’re not going to tell me I have to do it like the other instructors, are you?”
“Don’t worry about that. It’s all up to you. I’ll give you full authority, so do as you please.”
“Hmm.”
Well then.
If they told me to prepare a lecture like the other instructors, I’d be screwed.
Even though I created the Battle Mage concept, it’s not like I understand everything about it.
If I can just condense it and teach the basics, it might be pretty doable.
‘…Besides, there’s something these people in this world can never know.’
I was a teacher in my past life too.
It’s strange how I ended up teaching even after possessing this body, but it feels strangely refreshing.
–Could things be different in this world?
If I could avoid repeating the ending I faced at Taeguk High in my past life.
Then…
“Oh. Are you feeling more willing? Your face looks a little brighter.”
“Well, so-so. It’s the Chairman’s will, after all. I can’t go against it. I’ll do as I’m told.”
“That’s a good attitude.”
Kiron nods, looking pleased.
Judging by the look on his face, he probably knows it too.
That it’s hard to bend Athena’s will.
“Then, consider it settled. I’ll take my leave now.”
“Do your best. I have high expectations.”
I bow to Kiron and leave the Vice-Chairman’s office.
But after taking just a few steps out of the room, another question popped into my head.
‘But will there actually be anyone to listen?’
No matter how I think about it, wouldn’t listening to a lecture from a fellow student be a bit of an ego hit?
The students at this academy are all stubborn as hell, so I doubt there would even be any applicants.
“…….”
Maybe if there aren’t any students, they’ll just shut down the course?
With that thought in mind, I head towards the instructor’s office that I was assigned.
They said to take applicants there, so if I just waited, someone would come.
Well, I figured no one would actually show.
*
There was someone.
“Hello.”
A woman with long, cherry-blossom colored hair.
A beautiful face, a gently rising chest.
And— the one who confessed to me.
Penell Moira had found the instructor’s office, smiling brightly.
“I heard the news. You’re going to be teaching, right?”
“You found out fast. Feels like it hasn’t even been a day since the decision.”
“Hehe. It’s not decided yet, but the rumors have already spread, you know.”
Seriously, can the security really be this lax?
If it’s such a big deal, a student taking on the role of instructor, you should try to keep it a bit more secret.
Why has it spread so far that Penell of all people came so quickly…
Penell picked up a piece of paper and grabbed a pen.
She wrote with fluid strokes, and just watching that made her seem like a proper noble lady.
“Here. This should be it, right?”
An application form with the name Penell Moira written on it.
Silently, I took it in my hand.
…I never thought there would be an applicant this quickly.
Seeing my reaction, she slightly raised the corners of her eyes and said with a seductive tone.
“But, you know. …Has anyone been here before you?”
“No. You’re the first.”
“Hehe. I thought so. I knew it.”
Penell said that, smiling with satisfaction.
Just by that, I could understand what she meant.
‘I’m the first. Herak.’
That only I am paying you the most attention.
And that’s why I could come here this early.
I knew she was speaking so subtly like that.
“You sly little minx.”
I chuckled and replied,
“Yeah, it’s just you, Penelope.”
“Eep?! …Yeah, heh heh. That’s right, of course.”
She actually blushed after being praised, and subtly averted her gaze.
Geez, even though she acts like she’ll confidently lead in romance, she’s still just a kid.
If her cheeks turn red just by being touched this lightly, then she should behave a bit more meekly.
*
And with Penelope seen off like that.
I asked Chiron to spread the word around the academy that I was waiting for applicants, so
in case someone else might come, I sat in my place, when the door clicked open.
A girl with black hair in pigtails.
It was Berry.
“…Ah, hello.”
I don’t know why she’s already tripping over her words like that.
Thud, thud.
Berry approaches me.
Even as she comes closer, she’s embarrassed to make eye contact.
She looks at me, then looks away, over and over.
“…Hey.”
“What.”
“Am I… am I first?”
She blurted out this question with an unknown meaning.
“No. Penelope came first.”
“Hah… okay.”
I don’t know what she felt after my reply.
Berry slightly furrowed her brow, then shook her head and relaxed her expression.
It didn’t make any sense at all.
‘Why is she like that?’
No, you’re friends with Fennel, aren’t you?
Why are you making that uncomfortable face while taking a class with your friend?
Ignoring my questioning gaze, Berry pulled out some paper and started scribbling with a pen.
It was pretty rough compared to Fennel.
“Here.”
“But are you really gonna listen? My lecture isn’t gonna be anything that great.”
I’d forgotten to ask Fennel earlier.
Now it was really starting to make me wonder.
‘Is my lecture even helpful?’
I’m not exactly interested in teaching battle mage theory.
And it’s not even really possible in the first place.
It’s not something you do with theory, it’s all about feeling.
So all I can actually teach is, at most, practical skills…
“Idiot. You don’t sign up for a class because you want to listen to the lecture.”
“Then?”
“…Nevermind if you don’t get it.”
Berry glared at me like she was about to say something like ‘or you die’ and then turned her back.
Her footsteps heading out the door sounded like she was pissed off about something.
“What’s with her.”
She’s turned into like, a girl who’s fallen in love or something.
*
A few other students also came.
It seemed like most of the second-year magic students were taking it.
When I subtly asked them why they applied, every single one said the same thing.
‘Just because? It looks fun.’
“…….”
Do they think my lecture’s some kind of easy A or something?
I don’t really intend for it to be that.
I might throw in some witty jokes here and there, but I prefer to stick to lectures that focus on education.
That’s how I was in my past life too.
Alright, so Samson, Thomas, Sophie – those types all came and put in their applications.
How many of them will actually stick it out, who knows.
But this time, a real head-scratcher showed up.
*Thump, thump.*
Heavy footsteps.
Not like the usual weaklings from the magic department.
That sound – the kind only people who are armored with muscle make.
“It’s been a while.”
It was Sybil, a second-year from the knight department, who’d come to see me.
“Why the hell are you here?”
Blink, blink.
He just keeps blinking his eyes silently.
I honestly have no idea.
*‘It’s him.’*
Back when I was prepping for the duel with Apollo.
He was the one who gathered his goons to jump me.
He was Apollo’s lackey, so after that we shouldn’t have any reason to cross paths.
If anything, I kicked his ass so he should hate me.
I stare at Sybil with questioning eyes.
Sybil stares back at me for a moment, then shuts his eyes tight.
And then, he bows deeply to me and says,
“Please. May I also attend your lecture?”
“Huh?”
…Are you out of your mind?
