Exorcist in America

Chapter 420: Chapter 420: Arrival

Japan Nation.

Koto District, Tokyo.

A young girl with a single-shoulder backpack approached a rather secluded church.

Her skin was fair and delicate, and her cute face featured a slightly prominent nose and large eyes that shone like bright stars. The slight dimples that appeared when she moved added a playful and adorable touch to her demeanor.

She stood on the street outside the church, looking left and right.

Only a few residents were visible.

Tilting her head in thought, she then took several steps forward before suddenly turning around, bending slightly, and looking back with a suspicious gaze.

The next moment, she saw exactly what she expected.

At the road behind her, two panicked people suddenly scattered to the left and right.

"Hmph, just as I thought."

The girl snorted, straightened her posture, and continued towards the church.

But a look of exasperation appeared on her face as she muttered to herself.

"If two people who were walking together suddenly split up, wouldn't that look suspicious?"

She shook her head, dismissing the fact that she was being followed, aware that the followers were from her own family.

"I'm already in college!"

As she murmured, she looked ahead at the church.

The church was small and stood quietly as if it were an island of time, secluded from the world yet connected to it.

Its exterior was unassuming compared to the flamboyant churches in the bustling city center. It was simply made of plain stone and ancient stained glass windows, yet it exuded a serene and solemn aura.

Something about the church seemed to resonate with the girl, causing her to lose focus for a moment as she sighed silently.

"I'm already in college, Onii-chan, why haven't you come back yet?"

She gripped the straps of her backpack tightly and approached the main entrance.

Passing through a small path, she reached the front door and pushed it open, revealing a small courtyard with a few trees. Beneath one of the trees stood a man in a simple, dark robe, quietly sweeping the fallen leaves with a wooden broom.

He had piled up two heaps of leaves.

The man was robust, only slightly leaner than the figure she constantly missed. His face was covered with a thick, rugged beard, which spread across his jaw and cheeks, and his hair reached the back of his neck.

His appearance did not fit the usual image of a church guard or a clergyman.

However, Makoto Higa knew this man, who did not look like a clergyman or her Onii-chan, was very skilled.

Recently, the local gangs that disturbed the peace had received warnings, and now they behaved extremely well, not daring to come within ten miles of the church.

Even the supernatural disturbances in the area were resolved one by one by this unassuming man with precise shots.

"This clergyman's shooting is accurate, aiming exactly where he points, though he isn't as good as Nii-san, he reminds me of the shadow that Nii-san cast when he came to the island nation," Makoto suddenly remembered her sister, Makoto Koto, commenting on the clergyman.

As she approached the man, who stopped sweeping and looked over, Makoto quickly walked up and greeted him.

"Brother John."

John Wick's face still held the expression of his days as a hitman, with no extra emotion, just observing the young woman who often visited.

"Are you here to see Sister Eileen?"

"Yes," Makoto smiled.

John nodded and warned, "Sister Eileen is currently inside the church."

"Okay!" Makoto maintained her smile. "Then I'll go find her."

Having visited the church numerous times, she had grown to understand Brother John. At first, his impassive face might have been mistaken for unwelcomeness, but after Sister Eileen explained, she realized that John was a warm-hearted clergyman, not as standoffish as he seemed.

"Alright," John nodded again and resumed sweeping.

Makoto nodded back at John and continued towards the main building.

As she entered the building and her figure disappeared, John looked in the direction she had gone, his gaze shifting slightly.

"Am I imagining things? I always feel there's an ominous aura about her."

Although they never interfered with matters concerning the island nation while their bishop was away, the deacons of the York bishops had always kept an eye on the Higa sisters.

"This is not right, if there's an illusion, then it must truly be a problem."

John's eyes narrowed slightly, but he resumed sweeping.

"Leave it to Sister Eileen," he thought as he continued his work.

By then, Makoto had pushed open the door slightly and peeked inside.

The church was filled with soft candlelight, casting gentle light on the exquisite decorations around, creating a tranquil and mysterious atmosphere.

Beautiful religious paintings hung on the walls, their luminescence flickering mysteriously in the light.

At the center was a small

, exquisite altar with a Bible and a crucifix standing solemnly, exuding a majestic and holy aura. Below the altar, a figure was kneeling quietly in prayer, emanating a peaceful and serene aura.

This was Sister Eileen, respected by her and the nearby residents.

Seeing the praying figure, Makoto hesitated, not wanting to disturb Sister Eileen.

Just then, she noticed Sister Eileen bowing before the statue of Jesus, making the sign of the cross on her chest, then standing and turning to look at her.

"Makoto?"

Seeing the nun's warm smile, Makoto reluctantly walked in.

"Sorry, Sister Eileen, I didn't know you were."

But before she could finish, Eileen interrupted her with a gentle smile.

"It's okay, I was just finishing. Come on over."

Eileen gestured to the side bench, her every move filled with tranquility and peace, making Makoto envious of her grace, though she knew she could never possess such a demeanor.

"Sister Eileen, someone confessed to me again yesterday." Makoto spoke with a hint of frustration.

Eileen sat quietly beside her, listening to Makoto's words, her eyes twinkling softly.

Since their bishop had chosen to connect with the Higa sisters, compared to the cold and busy Makoto Koto, the closest person to them was now Makoto standing in front of her.

Makoto visited the church almost daily.

The length of her visits varied; sometimes she would just sit and daydream before leaving, and sometimes she would sit all day lost in thought.

When Eileen saw Makoto's troubled expression, she began to probe, and over time, their interactions evolved into the current mode of one speaking and the other listening, occasionally offering advice.

"That's indeed unexpected and pleasing news," Eileen said with a gentle smile.

Makoto glanced at the nun and sighed. "Sister Eileen, it feels so troublesome. I even tried to dress down to look unattractive, and still, someone confessed!"

"It seems you have shown a unique charm in your interactions, attracting their attention," Eileen chuckled.

"Child, affection can take many forms. Some people might not just look at appearances or externals; they might be drawn to your charm and inner qualities."

Makoto paused, then sighed again.

"I guess I need to keep a lower profile."

"Do you dislike it?" Eileen raised an eyebrow.

"Yes, I do, because I already have someone I like," Makoto said.

"Let's not talk about that."

Then, looking earnestly at Sister Eileen, Makoto pursed her lips and continued, "Sister Eileen, has Onii-chan not returned yet?"

Eileen shook her head. "Not yet."

Makoto fell silent for a moment, then said, "It's been almost a year, and I'm already in college. Do you think Onii-chan might have encountered some danger?"

Hearing this, Eileen also became silent because this mission had taken their bishop longer than previous ones.

Although a thorough investigation revealed that previous popes spent years in the world rift before returning, with the quickest return taking over four years, their bishop's absence was breaking records. Yet, as a year was about to pass, a subtle anxiety grew within her.

She wasn't lacking confidence, but this unease grew with time, beyond her control.

"No, I believe the bishop will definitely return."

Seeing Makoto's worried expression, Eileen smiled and gently patted her hair.

"You must trust in the bishop's strength. Haven't you fought alongside him before? I believe you have a deep understanding of his abilities."

Remembering the powerful presence of the York bishop during their night battles against spirits and ghosts, Makoto felt a bit reassured, though the mention of fighting alongside him made her blush.

"Actually, it was all Onii-chan doing the work," Makoto murmured.

"I was just a bystander."

Eileen chuckled, stopping her patting and withdrawing her hand.

"Makoto, may I ask you a question?"

Makoto blinked and nodded.

"Have you been to any strange places?"

Startled by the question, Makoto was initially confused, but as Eileen reached out and opened her hand, Makoto's eyes widened slightly.

In Eileen's palm lay a small insect, tied to a thread of malice, indicating that the insect was formed from malice and wasn't a real bug.

"I've removed a thread of malice that was following you," Eileen said calmly.

"This is its transformed state."

After speaking, Eileen closed her hand into a fist, and from the crevice in her palm, a white light emerged, and she forcefully eliminated the thread of malice.

"I haven't been anywhere," Makoto looked at Eileen, bewildered, but after thinking, she earnestly responded.

"I did visit a classmate's home, but I didn't feel anything unusual."

E

ileen opened her hand, looked at her clean palm, and remembered the bishop's words. She had to admit, it was just as the bishop had described.

People with psychic abilities, spiritual power, or mediumistic talents were like delicious meals to evil spirits, attracting them like fate or a curse, no matter where they were.

"Child, some things don't wait for you to see them with your own eyes before they come knocking," Eileen said gently.

"This is what the bishop told me; when you least expect it, when you've done nothing, they've already come knocking."

Makoto furrowed her brow, becoming serious.

"Other than visiting that classmate's home, I haven't been anywhere else."

"It seems something might have happened at your classmate's place," Eileen said gently.

Having been with the bishop for so many years, she was no longer the novice nun from the convent but a battle-hardened deaconess.

"Child, could you take me to your classmate's neighborhood to have a look?"

Makoto nodded, about to say more, but the figure at the door interrupted her.

Brother John, who had been sweeping in the courtyard, appeared, his expression stern.

"Sister Eileen, could you come out and take a look? I've noticed something strange."

Eileen nodded and rose from the bench to head towards the door.

Seeing this, Makoto quickly followed.

Led by John Wick, they arrived at the garden area of the courtyard.

Chillingly, the decorative greenery was infested with disgusting caterpillars.

"This is..." Makoto looked at Eileen, who remained calm.

"This is a sign of its presence," Eileen said calmly.

"After I removed the malice from you."

Continuing, Eileen looked at Makoto and added, "It seems very keen on devouring your spiritual energy, so it came to see who stands behind you. This is likely a wise spirit or ghost."

Makoto sighed, "I'll tell my sister."

She had encountered this kind of situation more than once and was used to it. Her body always bore marks left by evil spirits, and this time, the marks seemed not aimed at harming her but at finding an opportunity to kill her.

"Alas, I won't go anywhere anymore," Makoto thought gloomily, having been so cautious yet still targeted by malevolent beings.

"That's probably for the best," Eileen said.

"But before your sister arrives, you should stay here."

"Okay!" Makoto obediently replied.

"Sister Eileen, use holy water to burn them," Eileen looked back at the caterpillars crawling all over the leaves.

"Otherwise, these insects, formed from malice, will become its helpers."

John nodded, pulling out a small bottle of holy water, removing the cork, and pouring it over the caterpillars.

Instantly, a foul smoke rose from the caterpillars, which then turned into dry, cracked stone and vanished into ash.
