Chapter 18: Chapter 18 Survival
In a hidden research facility deep within Ishgar, a group of scientists worked tirelessly, their eyes glued to the various monitors displaying data. The room hummed with the sound of machinery, and in the center of it all, a massive water tank housed their most ambitious experiment—Project Superhuman.
The lead scientist stood with arms crossed, his sharp gaze locked onto the test subject suspended in the liquid. "Not bad... How is Subject 0F7 progressing?"
One of the researchers, a young man with thick glasses and a clipboard full of notes, beamed with excitement. "Sir, Subject 0F7 is responding well. The DNA sample we extracted from Fairy Tail's Devil Slayer is integrating smoothly into the host!"
The lead scientist narrowed his eyes at the mention of that infamous guild. "Fairy Tail, huh? Tsk... That troublesome group won't just let it slide if they find out one of their own is missing."
Another scientist, a woman tapping away at a console, quickly interjected, "We anticipated that, sir. That's why we only took a DNA sample. No direct abductions—just pure data collection to fuel our experiment."
The lead scientist mulled it over for a moment before nodding. "Acceptable. Continue the experiment. But remember—under no circumstances can we afford to get caught. Fairy Tail is... a problem we don't want to deal with."
The tension in the lab thickened as the bubbling water in the tank began to swirl, the figure inside twitching ever so slightly. Project Superhuman was evolving... and soon, the world would witness its true potential.
Back in the cave beneath Elphael.
After being hurled through the Gate, Erza and Mira hit the ground hard, gasping for breath. They felt it immediately—Malenia's presence had vanished. The oppressive aura that had nearly crushed them was gone.
Relief was fleeting. Horror crept in the moment they realized he wasn't with them.
They scrambled to their feet, ignoring the pain in their bodies. Their first instinct was to go back—back into that twisted land. Back for him. That idiot... What was he thinking?
They knew Fate was strong, stronger than he let on. But Malenia wasn't just strong. She was beyond them—beyond anything they had ever faced. And he had stayed behind. Alone.
Their hands reached for the glowing portal, desperate to pull it open, to undo their escape—but the light flickered. Then, just like that, it was gone.
Time froze.
They don't know what just happened... things just escalated so fast...
One moment, they were on a routine demon-hunting job. The next, they were fighting a Demigod. A real Demigod.
Neither of them could even scratch her, yet Fate was keeping up with her somehow and he was fast enough to react to her attacks.
"If only... we'd listened to him... if only we'd run while he held her off... he could've—he might have escaped with us..." Erza's voice trembled, rage and sorrow intertwining.
She clenched her fists. Then, she slammed them down onto the stone floor. Again. And again. Cracks spread beneath her relentless assault, but the anger wouldn't die down. It wouldn't stop eating her alive.
Tears fell freely, mixing with the dust. Mira wasn't any better. It had been her pride—her stubbornness—that refused to heed his warning. She wanted to prove her strength, and in doing so, she doomed him.
Fate was an arrogant bastard. A smug, teasing, insufferable bastard. But he meant well.
Mira turned, watching her rival, who had gone eerily still. Erza's breaths were uneven, her shoulders shaking. Faces from her past flickered in her mind—people she had lost, one by one. And now, another. The white-haired teen who had fought by her side, the one who had walked ahead of her, now slipping further and further away—
-Crack
Her vision turned red.
'It's my fault...'
She rose, her movements slow, deliberate. Mira won't even blame her if she stabbed her right about now for her massive ego that screw them up.
But much to her surprise the scarlet teen just walked past her.
"Erza?" Mira called, unsettled. Seeing her rival acting odd, Erza didn't respond but continued walking before doing a full-on sprint toward the Hell Gate which was slowly losing its power.
Erza requipped her married blades, as Mira knew what her rival was about to do.
"ERZA NO!" She shouted but it was too late as the blade stabbed into the stone tablet which still had some power.
And just like the same mistake Mira once made, the Hell Gate exploded with the remaining power inside. The explosion wasn't as strong as the one she caused but Erza took a direct hit from it and Mira wasn't spared from it either.
The underground cave they were standing in shook violently, fortunately, it didn't collapse on them.
Pushing herself out from the rubble the Take Over Mage wanted to yell at her rival but froze after seeing the state Erza was in, blood, a lot of blood was flowing on the ground, her armor was destroyed, and her white dress was now dyed red.
Mira quickly snapped out of her shock, she rushed over moving the rubbles off her rival seeing her unconscious state, the white-haired teen using what little fabric she had along with the clothes Erza was wearing turning them into make-shift bandages to try and stop the bleeding.
Luckily she learned a bit about medical work, due to Fate's taunt that one day her sibling might be in front of death door and it would be better if she could do something other than cry and hope for a miracle to come.
Mira quickly placed the unconscious girl onto her back. "Hold on Erza!" She said her voice filled with panic before activating her magic.
Satan Soul!
She spread her wings and was about to take off when she noticed the married blades on the ground, Redgrave was in pieces with the only intact part in the handle while Scarlet looked as if it was about to break with the large crack on it.
Mira knew how precious the married blades meant to Erza, she quickly bent down gathering them with her hands before flying off, using all the magic energy she had to get them to Porlyusica as soon as possible.
A day later.
Makarov's face had drained of all color when Porlyusica called him. The news hit him like a hammer.
Erza was alive. Barely.
Fate... Fate was gone.
Mira sat beside the unconscious redhead, bandages covering her own wounds. Her voice trembled as she recounted the events. Makarov listened in silence, feeling the weight of their failure settle over him like a suffocating fog.
Fate had realized what Malenia was. He had wanted to run. And yet, he stayed.
Because of them.
The old Master's hands clenched. He would have to tell the guild. They would mourn. They would rage. But worst of all—he had to face the reality that if he had just said no to taking Mira and Erza along...
Maybe that boy would still be here.
A groan snapped everyone's attention to the bed. Erza stirred, her fingers twitching as she slowly sat up, wincing. "What... happened?"
Before anyone could answer, Mira threw herself at her, gripping her tightly. "Thank god... I thought you were gone... I..." Her voice broke. "I wouldn't be able to live with myself if you died too... along with him."
"Ugh, Thank... but..." Erza blinked still feeling odd by her rival action. "Him?"
Silence. Mira pulled back, looking at her in disbelief. "Fate."
Erza tilted her head. "Who?"
Her question shocked the whitehead even more. "Fate! The one that comes to Fairy Tail with you! The one that you protected from everyone in the guild when a fight broke out! The one you've been stalking for two years after he wandered off somewhere and got dragged back by you! Fate Redgrave!"
Mira shouted at her with disbelief not wanting to accept what she was hearing from Erza of all people.
"Ugh... I'm sorry but who is that?" Her words make the other three in the room froze.
"Y-You don't remember him?" Mira asks not trusting her own ears.
"Sorry but... I never met this... Fate, guy, or whatever you call him."
The room went silent not knowing what to say.
"Here!"
Mira held up the damaged Scarlet, handing it to Erza.
"What do you think of this blade? Do you feel anything seeing it? This, this is "your" blade." Mira asked hoping Erza would remember. The scarlet-haired teen looks at the blade for a bit. "The craft is great but with this damage, it is useless now." Erza just handed the blade back to Mira.
"Mira..." Makarov called not wanting things to escalate any further, the two girls have bonds with Fate, and Makarov knows that. He also knows Mira must be blaming herself for what happened and he is pretty sure at first Erza's reaction would be worse when she woke up, but now the scarlet-haired teen has suffered from memory loss that completely removed "Fate" from her life.
He can see Mira is visibly shaken by this but she didn't say a word or lash out at Erza. Instead, Mira just held on to the cracked blade, holding it close to her chest. "I see... If you don't want it anymore, then I'll take it."
The two old-timers can see Mira doing her best to hold back her emotions, blood flowing down her left palm by how hard she clutches her fist.
"I don't know what's so special about a crack blade. But why are you shaking?" Erza asks not realizing her fingers suddenly shook a little seeing Scarlet being taken from her.
"If that's all then I will leave." Mira said before turning away but paused right at the entrance for a second before continuing her walk out leaving Porlyusica's place.
'That isn't her anymore... She isn't the Erza Scarlet that I know... my rival.' Mira's steps became quicker, slowly becoming a fast walk. 'That annoying sexy arrogant hypocrite smug half-dead faking bastard...' Her legs move fast, and her hold on the damaged blade tightens.
The memory of their previous interaction flashed through her mind with each step.
"What's the point in packing a sword like that if you aren't even going to use it!?" Mira yells frustratingly at Fate as the two are in one of their "rough flirting" dubs by the other guildmate.
Fate just leaned forward with his blade stabbed on the ground in a carefree way taunting her. "Oh my bad, I was afraid you might moan once I use my blade on you."
"Oh yeah, asshole?" Mira said cracking her fist. "I'm going to pound you so hard, you won't be able to stand once I am done with you, bitch."
"Oh? You seem to really want my long sword up your ass huh?" Fate fired back before cracking his neck. "We'll see who is the real bitch once I'm done with you."
"Bring it jackass. I'm going to squeeze the life out of you!"
"Do you two hear yourself right now!?" Macao yelled at them, annoyed by the two white-haired teens in the guild.
"Shut it loser/nerd!" Both Mira and Fate turn to shout back at the blue-haired man, both giving him the middle finger.
Mira ran through the forest, she didn't know where she was going but she didn't care. She just wants to be left alone with her thoughts... lost in thoughts.
Mira stared at the white-haired teen sitting opposite of her. "just what the hell even going on in that head of yours?"
"Stuff." He calmly answered.
Mira stopped in front of a cliff, her breath heavy, her eyes red, and tear stains on her face. 'Fate...' She remembered his smile.
"That idiotic bastard..." She murmurs her gaze narrowed down to her left palm, her fingers placed on the cracked blade.
She brought the crack blade up, and multiple strands of white hairs fell down from the cliff. "Is too stubborn to die."
She brought the blade down staring into the distance with a sharp gaze, her left hand reaching to her wrist has turned into a demonic hand. "So... I won't accept you dead unless I see your dead body myself."
Back on the other side.
A smirk played on Fate's lips. What he had just done was exactly what Malenia described—both noble and foolish.
By destroying the gate, he had ensured his friends' safety but also trapped himself here with her. Even if he somehow defeated her, there was no way back.
"It doesn't matter anymore." He forced a grin, convincing himself that this was the right choice.
Years of using [Self Deception] had honed his ability to lie to himself without hesitation. His memories had begun to blur, fragments of his past life slipping away, erased bit by bit until they felt like nothing more than a long, fading dream.
He couldn't even remember his original name anymore.
Inside his inner world, the three Heroic Spirits watching from within his Reality Marble frowned at his decision, their silent gazes heavy with disapproval.
But Fate had already made up his mind.
"Even if I die," he said, manifesting Gáe Bolg in his good hand and leveling its crimson tip at the Demigod, "I'm taking you down with me."
Malenia simply tilted her head.
"We'll see."
And then she was upon him.
The clash of steel against steel sent sparks dancing in the air. Each of her strikes carried a force so immense that his arm felt like it was splitting apart from the impact. Every parry drained his strength. Every moment felt like he was walking the edge of a blade.
Jumping back to create some distance, he barely had time to breathe before she lunged again, before the blade could reach him, he let go of his spear.
Install!
His body pulsed with golden light as he activated the power of Enkidu, the Ultimate Weapon. Releasing Chains of Heaven, he sent them surging toward her.
But Malenia was fast—too fast. She shattered the bindings with a single devastating slash, closing the gap between them in an instant.
Her blade flashed.
He barely registered the pain before his vision blurred.
His torso—severed clean in half.
For a brief second, there was only silence.
Then, with a sickening squelch, his two halves pulled back together. Clay-like flesh reformed, his magic circuits screaming in protest as they forcefully knit him back together.
"Urghh—!" A pained grunt tore from his throat. His body was intact, but his mana reserves had been cut in half just to restore himself.
Malenia's brows furrowed, momentarily thrown off by his unnatural regeneration.
That hesitation was all he needed, he quickly caught the red spear that he just let go.
Fate poured every remaining ounce of his magic into Gae Bolg, the bloodthirsty spear awakening in his grasp, pulsing with violent energy.
Gae Bolg Alternative!
The crimson spear shot forward like a falling star, a death-seeking missile piercing straight through her heart.
Malenia—the Blade of Miquella—staggered. Blood spurted from her chest as she collapsed onto the rotting ground.
It was over.
Fate stood there, barely keeping himself upright. His breaths came ragged and uneven. His entire body felt like it was falling apart.
The air around him was suffocating. The Scarlet Rot's presence gnawed at him, poisoning everything it touched. The ground itself was decaying. The plants withered and died.
Fate knew what came next.
And sure enough, her body ignited in a blinding orange light.
The flames wrapped around her like a cocoon, blooming into a massive, sickly scarlet flower.
Phase Two.
Emerging from the rotting petals was Malenia, reborn.
Her previous form had burned away—her clothes were gone, her body now entirely consumed by the Scarlet Rot. Her metal arm still remains, and her long, tangled hair now spreads wildly like an ominous red storm. The rotten flesh around her face concealing her eyes.
And behind her… massive wings formed from writhing moths unfurled, casting a monstrous shadow.
"The Scarlet Bloom flowers once more."
Fate let out a tired exhale.
"Right… she has a Phase Two…" he muttered under his breath, his exhaustion clear.
The air thickened with toxicity. Fate felt his connection to Enkidu slipping—his borrowed power fading, and his magic energy was almost empty.
If he returned to normal, would his body be able to resist the Scarlet Rot? Or would he succumb like everything else in this wretched place?
Malenia's form blurred, launching into the sky like a divine executioner, her killing intent suffocating.
At that moment—
His eyes flashed gold.
A surge of energy flooded through his circuits. His energy was completely restored.
Fate didn't know where this sudden power boost came from. He didn't care.
"Fine. Let's finish this."
With a single motion, hundreds of golden chains erupted from behind him.
The Chains of Heaven—crafted to bind the gods themselves—snaked through the air, forming a shifting, glowing barrier around him while countless others shot forward, aiming for the Goddess above.
Malenia, once unwavering, flinched.
She twisted mid-air, desperately trying to evade the chains, but Fate wasn't letting her go.
His blue eyes burned brighter.
Weapons crafted from clay materialized around him, launching themselves at her in rapid succession. She dodged, weaving between the golden onslaught, but she couldn't avoid everything.
Her body crashed down, releasing a final desperate explosion of Scarlet Rot, an apocalyptic scarlet flower blooming around them.
The land screamed as the rot spread.
Fate grits his teeth, part of his hair turning green—his connection with Enkidu deepening.
And his eyes flash golden once more.
I will awaken the breath of the planet… Therefore—
More golden chains erupted from the ground, swirling around him. Their glow grew blinding, an ethereal storm of divine energy.
Enuma Elish!
Fate's body merged into the massive tip of the Chains of Heaven, turning into an unstoppable divine weapon.
He descended like judgment itself, three times Malenia's size, a golden meteor crashing into the Goddess of Rot.
The chains wrapped around her, binding her completely.
And then, the massive chain crashed into her.
Silence.
The battlefield stilled. Malenia... finally defeated.
Fate collapsed.
His knees hit the bloodied water beneath him, his hands barely keeping him upright.
"At least… I won." He let out a weak chuckle, watching the water around him turn redder with his own blood.
But even as he smiled, he could feel it.
He was dying.
Even if [Death's Door] kept him alive for now, the Scarlet Rot had already seeped too deep.
He knew he wouldn't last long.
His vision darkened.
"This happened… because I was weak… If only he had more power. Maybe… things wouldn't have ended this way."
His consciousness slipped and he fell to the ground as his blood soaked the rotten earth.
