Chapter 28: Robynlu's Conditions
Watching Wendy rub her face like a little raccoon, Moen couldn't help but chuckle.
With a faint shimmer of light, his Cloth armor dissolved into particles, vanishing from his body and revealing his bare arms. He then pulled some tissue from his pack and gently wiped Wendy's face.
At four or five years old, she was at the peak of her cuteness—every little movement exuded pure, heart-melting charm.
Wendy sniffled softly, still trying to hold back her tears.
It was clear she was heartbroken over being separated from Jellal. After losing her mother—the Sky Dragon Grandeeney—Jellal had been the first person she met. He protected her, led her out of danger, and gave her someone to lean on when she was lost and frightened.
"Don't be sad, Wendy. That's just life—full of goodbyes and reunions. Today's parting is just so you can meet again under better circumstances."
Moen comforted her gently, his voice warm and calm.
"When you grow up—when you become a powerful mage—you can go out into the world and find Jellal yourself."
Realizing that a kid this young might not fully grasp his emotional pep talk, Moen quickly added a more practical follow-up.
"Really?"
Wendy stopped sobbing, her big eyes fixed on Moen with hopeful curiosity.
"Of course. Be confident, Wendy. You're a daughter of dragons—you'll definitely grow into an incredible mage someday."
Moen smiled and softly patted her head. Even with her mushroom-cut hairstyle, she looked adorably determined.
"Mm! I will! I'm going to find Grandeeney too!"
Hearing Moen call her the "daughter of a dragon" gave Wendy the boost she needed. She fought back her tears, her little face hardening with resolve. She didn't want to keep crying forever.
"Do you want to come back with me? To Fairy Tail? It's a warm, welcoming family—full of kids just like you."
Seeing Wendy finally calm down, Moen seized the moment. He extended his invitation while the timing was just right.
Jellal had vanished somewhere, clearly in a rush to handle something important. So the first priority was bringing Wendy into the guild. After all, he had already helped her and Jellal before—Wendy clearly trusted him. The odds of success weren't bad.
Moen glanced at the elderly man standing behind them—Robynlu. Truth be told, he would've preferred to go a bit slower with his approach, but this old man was clearly a direct competitor.
Moen hadn't missed that earlier conversation between Robynlu and Wendy when they stepped out of the house. It had hit him like a tidal wave.
He created all those thought projections just to convince Wendy to join his guild?!
For a second, Moen had been genuinely stunned.
This rival… was dangerously strong.
But the stronger the rival, the more fired up Moen became.
Elite-level competition? Fine—he'd take it head-on!
No more subtle buildup. Moen went all in, launching what he jokingly called a "bull-headed offensive" right at Wendy!
"Eh?"
Wendy froze when she heard the invitation. Her brain seemed to lag for a second—eyes wide, her hands flailing a bit as she stared at Moen in confusion.
"B-but I…"
Wendy opened her mouth but didn't know what to say. Her heart was in turmoil. She didn't know what the right choice was anymore.
"It's okay, Wendy. There's no rush. You can take your time to think about it. And of course, you can say no. I'll be around—and I'll try to find Jellal too."
Seeing how flustered Wendy was, Moen chuckled again and gently helped her relax.
Wendy was truly a thoughtful child. Despite being only four or five years old, she wasn't the type to think only of herself. That was why she found herself caught in such a difficult position.
Thanks to Moen's reassurance, she gradually calmed down. She turned to look at the old man standing at the doorway—his hands behind his back, his posture slightly hunched. This was Grandpa Robynlu.
Surprisingly, Robynlu still wore a gentle smile on his face. He didn't seem the least bit upset that Moen had just tried to recruit Wendy, despite the tremendous effort he had made to create all those thought projections for her.
"This old man's got some serious composure..."
Moen grit his teeth inwardly.
"He can keep a straight face even when someone tries to steal his recruit right in front of him? Definitely a tough opponent."
"Wendy, do you want to leave with this young man?"
Before Wendy could say anything, Robynlu asked with a chuckle.
"I... I don't know..."
Wendy's little face scrunched up in frustration. She was clearly torn, and understandably so—decision-making wasn't exactly her strong suit. And she was only a kid.
"I'm sorry, Wendy. I can't just let you go with him."
Robynlu shook his head, his tone gentle but firm.
His words caught both Wendy and Moen off guard.
"So he's not going to make this easy after all..."
Moen frowned slightly, feeling like he was in the middle of a college entrance recruitment battle—and Wendy was the top student. He and Robynlu were the rival schools.
In a way, it wasn't far from the truth. Wendy was a Sky Dragon Slayer—a user of Sky Dragon Slayer Magic. That alone made her a once-in-a-generation talent.
"Mr. Robynlu, surely Wendy should be free to make her own decision?"
"Whether to stay or go—that choice should belong to her."
Seeing his golden prospect about to be locked down, and his system quest hanging by a thread, Moen couldn't stay silent. He challenged Robynlu's stance directly.
In the world of mages, it was an accepted right: mages could choose to join or leave any guild at will. After all, guilds weren't institutions of strict control.
Even Fairy Tail, according to Master Makarov, had seen many powerful mages come and go—some even went on to create famous guilds of their own.
So, Robynlu's statement, although emotionally grounded, was a risky move. Even if Wendy hadn't been planning to leave, such control could easily backfire.
"I don't know Fairy Tail. And I don't know you either, kid,"
Robynlu replied calmly.
"That boy Jellal entrusted Wendy to me. Naturally, I can't just let her walk away with someone I don't trust."
Wendy opened her mouth but couldn't find the words.
And for once, Moen was speechless too.
That answer was a checkmate. Even if he still had the "Natsu the Fire Dragon" card to play, it would be meaningless now.
Because deep down… Moen understood Robynlu's reasoning.
In Robynlu's place, he would've done the same.
A quiet respect began to form in Moen's heart.
After a pause, he spoke again—this time calmly and earnestly.
"Mr. Robynlu, what you're saying is... if I can show you what Fairy Tail is truly like—or if I can find Jellal and have him personally agree—then you'll let Wendy go with me. Is that correct?"
Robynlu looked at Moen with a flicker of surprise.
He hadn't expected the young man to be so determined.
Just moments ago, he'd said Wendy was free to choose—but now he was clearly set on recruiting her.
Still, Robynlu didn't push back.
"That's right."
If Moen could prove that both he and the Fairy Tail guild were worthy of trust—or if Jellal himself came back and said it was okay—then he would allow Wendy to leave.
