Chapter 5: The Price of Truth
Maddie stood frozen, staring at the phone in her hand. The words from the unknown number were still blinking on the screen. "If you want to save Victoria, you'll have to choose. Elijah or the truth. Choose wisely." Her pulse quickened as the weight of the message settled in her chest.
For the first time since she'd agreed to take on this case, she felt the full weight of what she was up against. The lines between right and wrong were becoming blurrier by the second. Elijah King, the man she had come to rely on, seemed to be at the center of a storm she wasn't prepared to weather. And now, this mysterious warning—was it a threat? A manipulation?
She glanced up at Elijah, who was still standing across from her, his face tense, watching her every move. He had asked for her trust, but could she really give it to him after everything she'd learned?
The silence between them grew heavy, almost suffocating. Maddie opened her mouth to say something, anything, but her mind was racing too fast for words to catch up. She needed time. Time to think. To process.
Without a word, she turned and walked toward the door.
"Where are you going?" Elijah's voice stopped her cold. There was a sense of urgency in his tone, something she hadn't heard before. It wasn't the calm confidence he usually wore so well—it was desperation.
Maddie hesitated, her hand still on the door handle. "I need to think," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can't do this, Elijah. Not like this."
She opened the door and stepped into the hallway, her mind racing with a hundred different thoughts. Was she making a mistake? Was she walking away from the very thing she had been drawn into? Or was she walking into something darker than she could even imagine?
The elevator ride down felt like it took an eternity. Each floor passed slowly, the tension in her chest growing with every second. When the doors opened to the lobby, Maddie stepped out into the bustling chaos of the city. People walked around her, oblivious to the storm brewing inside her. She could feel her heart hammering in her chest, each beat a reminder of the choice she had to make.
But how could she choose? How could she make a decision when the truth was so elusive? She didn't know who to trust anymore. Not even Elijah.
She didn't go home. Instead, she wandered aimlessly through the streets, trying to clear her head. The wind cut through her coat, but she barely noticed. The world around her seemed distant, a blur of noise and movement, while her mind remained locked on the message and what it meant for her future.
She found herself in a small park, the cold, desolate trees casting long shadows across the path. She sat on a bench, staring at the empty space before her, trying to gather her thoughts.
The message had made it clear: she had to make a choice. Elijah or the truth. But how could she choose between them? Elijah was the man who had asked for her help. He was the one who had opened up to her about his past, about Victoria. But there was still so much he hadn't told her. What was he hiding? What was the truth she had yet to uncover?
She had never felt more lost.
Minutes passed. Maybe hours. She didn't know. But eventually, her phone buzzed again. This time, it was a new message from the same unknown number: "Time is running out. You need to act before it's too late."
A shiver ran down her spine. Who was this person? How did they know what she was thinking?
She stood up, her legs shaky, and made her way back to her car. She had to see Elijah again. She had to get the truth from him, once and for all.
Elijah's office was eerily quiet when she returned, as if the air had shifted in her absence. She had expected him to be gone, to have retreated into whatever world he inhabited when he wasn't under her scrutiny. But there he was, waiting for her, his face unreadable.
"You came back," he said, his voice low.
Maddie didn't respond immediately. She simply walked into the room, her eyes never leaving his. She had made her decision. She wasn't going to back down. She needed answers, and she would get them.
"Elijah," she began, her voice firm, "you've been lying to me. I know you have. You've kept things from me, and I need to know why."
His expression flickered—just for a moment—before he masked it. "What do you mean? I've been as honest with you as I can be."
Maddie shook her head. "That's not enough anymore. I know about the file. I know about the kidnapping. And I know that you and Victoria were involved in something that's far bigger than what you've told me. You owe me the truth, Elijah. All of it."
For a moment, he didn't speak. His eyes narrowed as he studied her, as if trying to figure out what her next move would be. Then, he sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"You're right," he said softly, almost as if the words pained him. "I haven't told you everything. But I was trying to protect you, Maddie. From the truth. From the danger that comes with it."
"Protect me?" she asked, incredulous. "By lying to me? By keeping me in the dark?"
"I wasn't trying to lie to you," Elijah said quickly. "I was trying to protect you from the people who would do anything to hurt you if they knew you were involved. I didn't want you to be a target."
"Who are they, Elijah?" Maddie demanded. "Who's been threatening me? Who's been threatening Victoria? And why are you involved in all of this?"
Elijah hesitated, his gaze drifting to the window as if the answer was somewhere beyond the glass. "It's a group, Maddie. A dangerous one. They've been after Victoria for years. They want something she has—something I can't explain. And the closer we get to the truth, the more dangerous it becomes for everyone involved."
Maddie's heart skipped a beat. "What does she have? What's so important that people would kill to get their hands on it?"
Elijah turned back toward her, his eyes dark and filled with regret. "I can't tell you yet. I can't tell you everything. But the longer you stay in this, the more you'll put yourself in harm's way."
"I'm already in harm's way, Elijah," Maddie said, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and frustration. "You can't keep me in the dark anymore. I need to know the truth. I deserve to know the truth."
For the first time, Elijah's façade cracked. His voice was barely above a whisper. "If I tell you, it won't just change everything. It will change you."
