Chapter 353: You're Telling Me This Is a Cub?
It was still the same place, the little white tiger did not come out to play.
Chen Ying heard from Group Leader Qi that after being bitten by a tick last time, the little white tiger had fallen ill and was still in the observation period. It was estimated that it would take a few more days before it could come out for airing.
Today, only the two little Northeast tiger siblings were in the play area.
Upon seeing Dong Sheng coming over, the tiger sister immediately dropped her dopey brother and ran over to find Dong Sheng to play.
She was especially eager to get Dong Sheng's little wheelchair and wouldn't let go once she bit into it.
Dong Sheng's keeper became anxious, wanting to pry open the mouth of the tiger sister Baxi, but the little one, though not very large, had no small amount of strength and stubbornly refused to let go.
Her brother Qishun came over, and seeing his sister biting down on the strange object and not letting go, he too bit down. He opened his mouth really wide and, as a result, successfully got it stuck.
Seeing her silly brother's actions, Baxi let go and took a step back.
Qishun had bitten on a place where there were two parallel metal bars, and his bite perfectly lodged his upper and lower jaws—finding himself unable to release his grip.
Qishun became frantic, whining and wildly shaking his head, causing Dong Sheng to sway from side to side, nearly falling to the ground.
The two keepers nearby hurried over to help, but dared not force Qishun's mouth open; they could only try to press the bars together.
However, the wheelchair was custom-made. Despite its appearance of lightness, the hardness was beyond the capability of human strength to affect.
With no other option, Chen Ying had to have people fetch tools to remove one of the connecting bars, finally freeing Qishun from his trapped state.
After freeing himself, Qishun was furious. His cheeks hurt, and he hopped angrily towards Dong Sheng, calling out several times and still wanting to fight.
Dong Sheng looked innocently at him; because the wheelchair had been dismantled on one side, he couldn't even run away. Seeing he was about to be beaten by Qishun, another tiger intervened.
It was Baxi, sacrificing kin for righteousness, charging and knocking her brother flying.
Qishun was about to cry in frustration, not only did his sister not help him fight the bad tiger, she even came to bully him—whining pitifully about his hard luck!
Chen Ying, while repairing the wheelchair, watched Qishun's performance dumbfounded.
It was truly rare to come across a drama king like this little tiger.
But compared to Dong Sheng's high intelligence, Qishun truly resembled the landlord's dim-witted son.
Baxi stood guard as Chen Ying repaired the wheelchair and, as he was about to fit the wheelchair onto Dong Sheng, Baxi dived in first. She even lifted a hind leg, trying to mimic Dong Sheng by sticking her paw into the harness.
Chen Ying knew that felines were curious by nature, but to see it in such intensity as Baxi's was rare.
He indulged Baxi, fixing the wheelchair onto her, and then, everyone witnessed Baxi ramming her head ten times in ten minutes.
Towards the end, Baxi's cries were filled with terror, and then, unsurprisingly, she toppled over.
Dong Sheng lay on the ground, dumbstruck, watching Baxi crash in every way imaginable, even Qishun, humming on the side, was stunned. His gaze followed Baxi, and after the frequent crashes, he cowered, airplane ears showing.
The two keepers quickly went to rescue Baxi.
Dong Sheng secured his own wheelchair and bit Chen Ying's pant leg, pulling back.
"Uhm, let's go quickly, they're going to start fighting over here soon."
Dong Sheng ran off first, taking advantage of Baxi still looking for consolation in her misery, promptly fleeing the scene.
Although it wasn't him that caused Baxi to ram her head, when a tigress gets angry, she simply doesn't listen to reason, after all.
Chen Ying, walking with Dong Sheng for a large round, returned to the animal shed only to see Big Tiger's keeper squatting outside the cage, unilaterally chatting with Big Tiger.
"If you're sent to the Southwest, you must be strong. If the tigers there cause you trouble, you must not back down. You have to show the majestic dominance of our Northeast golden tiger, let them see who the real boss of the tigers is."
Chen Ying listened with a mix of tears and laughter.
As they entered the corridor, the noise startled the keeper, who turned around to see Chen Ying and his face flushed slightly red as he quickly stood up.
"Dr. Chen, I've got all of Big Tiger's things ready. Group Leader Jin said that it will undergo a few more necessary check-ups tomorrow, and as soon as the results are out, it can leave anytime."
Chen Ying had just received a message from his center's headquarters detailing specific travel arrangements and transport personnel -- all of which didn't require Chen Ying's personal attention. He simply needed to oversee the two tigers being crated and then board a different flight to leave. Upon arrival at the destination, he'd follow the two tigers on a transfer vehicle back to Jiamu Gully.
After reaching the Jiamu Gully Mountain rescue center, there would be an observation period of about half a month. Once it was confirmed there were no issues, they would be sent to Jiamu Gully First Aid Station for continued treatment in a semi-wild state.
The current problem was that the Jiamu Gully First Aid Station's animal shed only had one room, which was occupied by Elder Tiger.
Now, with another Big Tiger coming, figuring out the accommodations became troublesome.
The best case scenario was to place it at the Protection Station, where there was enough room for Big Tiger to move around in the animal shed and the outside area.
But traveling back and forth between the two locations each day would increase Chen Ying's workload.
After much deliberation, the final consensus was to add another level on top of the animal shed, making it a two-story villa.
Elder Tiger would live on the bottom floor, Big Tiger on the top, coming down during the day for its activities, and heading back up at night to rest.
Once Big Tiger fully recovered from its injuries, it could be fitted with a prosthetic eye and then transferred to a wildlife park in collaboration with the rescue center.
Blindness was no issue for Big Tiger; as long as it didn't enter another fast or become reclusive, there were still plenty of zoos that would welcome it.
And if no suitable zoo was found, it was no problem either. The Northeast Tiger and Leopard Park would be the final backup; if all else failed, they would take Big Tiger back and find it a place to stay.
Busy times flew by quickly, and half a month passed in the blink of an eye.
Chen Ying specifically chose an auspicious day to go down the mountain and bring back the two tigers.
Elder Tiger was already aware of the arrival of his new companions; he climbed onto the high wooden frame, lay down, and pretended to sleep, facing the direction of the entrance and exit of the First Aid Station.
The two little tiger cubs were chubby and practicing climbing trees.
Compared to the Northeast Tiger, the Huanan Tiger was smaller in size, lighter in movement, and stronger in climbing trees.
The Northeast Tiger could also climb trees, but due to its own body weight, it could only climb up the trunks, and the branches couldn't bear their few hundred pounds of weight.
The Huanan Tiger was different; an adult Huanan Tiger was almost a third smaller than the Northeast Tiger and lighter in weight. An adult Northeast Tiger could weigh up to three hundred kilograms, while the Huanan Tiger was only around one hundred and thirty kilograms.
Because the Huanan Tiger was lighter and more agile, they could move on sturdier branches to hunt birds or monkeys.
The two little cubs were now quite good at climbing trees, able to climb up to branches three or four meters high in one go, and from there, they could jump directly onto the high wooden frame.
When they had nothing to do, they would repeat this game.
Climb up, jump down, then climb up again.
When jumping, they were especially clever in leaping onto Elder Tiger, and after numerous times, Elder Tiger would get annoyed and shoo them off the wooden frame with his tail.
Occasionally, Jinya and Little Jin would come to tease the two of them.
Especially Jinya, who would lead the little ones to climb high, then roll around on the ground laughing when they were in a dilemma, and be scolded by the unimpressed Elder Tiger before obediently picking up the cubs and jumping down with them.
Learning that new members were arriving today, all the animals came running back to watch, including Mendun'er, who, with its three cubs, directly moved into the bamboo forest next to the two buildings behind.
The weather was warming up, and they could safely spend the long nights without needing caves, and it was common for the mother and its four cubs to sleep under the floor of the raised layer.
The transshipment vehicle could only be driven up to the entrance of the Protection Station, and then the iron cage was carried down and placed in the forest opposite the Protection Station.
When the cage door was opened, Big Tiger, with Dong Sheng by his side, cautiously observed before slowly stepping out of the transshipment cage.
Dong Sheng's wheelchair was not convenient to use in the forest, so someone was specifically arranged to deliver the wheelchair to the First Aid Station, while Chen Ying used Uncle Zhao's large backpack to personally carry Dong Sheng into the mountain.
After Big Tiger left the transshipment cage, he also came to Chen Ying's side, sticking close to his leg.
The unfamiliar forest and terrain, coupled with limited visibility, made Big Tiger tense all over.
Carrying Dong Sheng on his back, Chen Ying soothingly patted Big Tiger's head, then patted its back, signaling it to follow him.
"Every time I see Brother Ying walking in the forest with Big Cat, I always think, 'if he can, so can I.' What a pity reality tells me that I really can't."
The staff member sent from the center to deliver Big Tiger was envious to the point of turning red.
"My Brother Ying is a real man. Left hand holds a tiger, right hand holds a bear, and on top of his head can balance an eagle!"
The other few people looked his way, "We've recorded that comment and will play it back for Brother Ying to hear when we get back, so he can see what our group's bootlicking looks like!"
The young people laughed and joked for a while, and after Chen Ying walked far away with the tiger, they put away the transshipment cage and placed it back in the vehicle.
Next came the job of other teams, such as observing how the Northeast Tiger adapted to the southern forest and so on.
The most important issue was their concern that this Northeast Tiger would mate with the wild Huanan Tiger and contaminate the Huanan Tiger's genes.
It was well-known that the Northeast Tiger and the Huanan Tiger were two different subspecies of tigers, with no reproductive isolation, only geographical isolation.
Back near the First Aid Station, the Big Northeast Tiger would not move, lowered its head to sniff, and let out a low tiger roar.
Elder Tiger was dozing off in the sun; suddenly hearing the tiger's roar, his ears twitched, he opened his eyes, and looked in the direction of the sound.
At the same time, Jinya and Little Jin, who were already nearly asleep waiting for their new companion, instantly went into alert mode.
"Roar, this guy actually dares to threaten us, come on, let's go show it some color."
Bossy Jinya was the first to jump down from the tree limb, after its experience in the wasteland, it was not the same as before.
It wasn't afraid of a big brown bear, so why would it fear you, an oversized Golden Cat?
Jinya, leading Little Jin, charged out resolutely, but before getting close, it came to an abrupt halt.
"Roar, isn't this Golden Cat a bit too big?"
Jinya looked at the Big Tiger standing next to Chen Ying, its fur bristled.
Being the same Golden Cat, why are you so big? If you grow any bigger, aren't you going to be the size of two Elder Tigers put together?
Chen Ying choked back a laugh and patted Big Tiger on the head.
"Let me introduce you, this Lynx girl is our First Aid Station's flower, better known as the Station Flower, Jinya. Next to her is Little Jin, the number one heartthrob Golden Cat at the station."
Big Tiger bared his teeth and called out affectionately, struggling to suppress the urge to pounce.
Meanwhile, Dong Sheng, lying on Chen Ying's back, greeted Jinya and Little Jin cheerfully.
Jinya looked up and realized that there were actually two of these hulking Golden Cats!
Wailing, no way, it had to go find Mendun'er for reinforcement!
Dong Sheng, who had been waiting for Jinya's response after greeting, saw Jinya's back as it ran away and suddenly sounded disheartened.
"Does it not like me?"
Chen Ying soothingly reached back and touched Dong Sheng, "No, Jinya likes cubs a lot, but maybe you two are just a bit bigger than it expected."
Chen Ying looked down at the not yet fully grown Big Tiger, two meters long and weighing a hundred and eighty kilograms; perhaps only Great Bai could compete with it in size now.
