Chapter 392: Chapter 390: The Roar of the Dragon
"What's going on?"The commotion on the river outside grew louder, and those inside the purple ship—doctors and keepers alike—could no longer sit still. One after another, they stumbled out of the ship's main hall.
"Gods!" the Chief Doctor cried out, his face twisted in terror. "A fire-breathing sea monster has entered the river bay—into the canal?!"
"That's no sea monster—it's a demon dragon! A demon dragon!" Besaro shouted, stomping his foot.
"A demon dragon… how did it sneak underwater?"Everyone was stunned.
"There are legends of demon dragons diving deep into the sea to hunt sea monsters—turns out it's true," the Chief Doctor said grimly, recalling something he'd read in Valyrian texts.
"Is Daenerys dead? She must be, right? She must be dead—only then would the demon dragon come to avenge her," Johanssen asked urgently.
If she wasn't dead, their whole band of rebels would become scapegoats—and they'd die instead! He didn't want to die!
"Maybe—" Besaro hesitated, when suddenly the ship gave a gentle shake. The once-still Moon Pool rippled silently with a swirl of dark currents.
"Not good—the demon dragon is here! Quick, run!"With a roar, the fat man transformed into a bolt of lightning and dashed toward the ship's edge near the dock, leaping overboard in one swift move.
His body was twice the size of a normal person's, yet in the water, he moved nimbly—like a fat-bellied toad.
"Quick! Get out of here!"Even then, Besaro didn't forget his companions. As he swam, he turned his head to shout back.
The doctors and keepers on deck stood dazed, not understanding what was happening.
But in just a few minutes, over a dozen purple-sailed warships had been split clean in half on the river—burning as they floated.
It was then Besaro suddenly realized: the Dragon Queen knew about the purple ship. She knew the council members were gathered here in the Moon Pool.
—He had personally told the Sea King before leaving. She had been nearby; she must have overheard.
Damn it!
BOOM—SPLASH!
As the thought crossed his mind, a massive water column exploded next to the ship with a deafening roar. The 20-meter-long vessel rocked violently like a leaf in a bucket, tossed by the impact. Torrents of water crashed down like a thunderstorm, soaking over twenty Braavosi elites at the ship's edge like drowned rats.
"Screeeee—"From the center of the splash rose a grotesque black dragon head, rearing back with a roar filled with rage and cruelty.
"Demon dragon…"Besaro shivered uncontrollably. Abandoning his swimming strokes, he dove straight underwater, his large head disappearing beneath the surface without a ripple or sound.
"Oathbreakers…"The demon dragon opened its maw and let out a raspy, guttural voice—cold as the deepest abyss, rough as crushed glass beneath a millstone.
Like a typhoon sweeping through, it sent bamboo blinds and silk veils whipping wildly across the deck.
But what truly made the Braavosi tremble in fear—The demon dragon was speaking!
They understood it—the demon dragon was speaking to them.
"The demon dragon… spoke?"Water dripped from the Chief Doctor's hair and slid down his face, but he didn't even notice. He turned his head, blankly looking around, hoping someone could confirm whether he'd just imagined it.
"This doesn't make sense… it's not magic. I've never heard of demon dragons being so cunning—hiding in the river, burning ships, and now it can talk?!"
A man with a shoehorn-shaped face pounded his head against the deck, as if trying to wake himself from a nightmare.
Well…Dahei being able to speak wasn't scientific—but it was definitely magical.
On the day it devoured the divine essence of the Rat Cook, Dahei had gained the ability to communicate through speech. But its speech was… unusual.Like a foreigner speaking a language no native understands. Just because a Chinese person can't understand it doesn't mean the foreigner is braying like a donkey, right?
That was Dahei's situation. It spoke the ancient language of the previous age—the Source Tongue, used by the Children of the Forest and the ravens.
Yes, the ravens used for sending messages in this world—the big black crows—were actually intelligent magical creatures.
No one knew they could speak. Or rather, the harsh cries they emitted were actually Source Tongue.
Only the Children of the Forest could understand them. Humans couldn't.
Not only could they not understand it, human vocal cords couldn't even produce its sounds.
No human had ever spoken the Source Tongue.
Daenerys couldn't understand it either—but her dragon soul state was special.
She couldn't comprehend the sounds, yet she could understand the meaning.
The Source Tongue, also called "the Language that Praises the Earth," had been spoken by the Children of the Forest for millions of years in the age before the Long Night.
And not just the Children of the Forest—most sentient magical beings could speak Source Tongue.
The era before the first Long Night was called the Ancient Age, during which many divine beings emerged: the gods, the Children of the Forest, and the dragons.
Some gods even founded kingdoms—like the Dawn Empire in the far eastern lands of Yi Ti.
The first Emperor of the Dawn Empire, known as the Celestial Emperor, was a child of the gods—the sole son of the Night Lion (god of death) and the Daughter of Light (predecessor to R'hllor, Lord of Light).
As a divine heir, the Celestial Emperor lived over ten thousand years. It's said he eventually ascended to the stars—or perhaps simply died.
His son, the Pearl Emperor, lived only a thousand years. With each generation, the divine blood grew thinner, and the emperors of the Dawn Empire lived shorter lives.
But even then, they still outlived modern people.
Besides the Dawn Empire of Yi Ti, the Isle of Thunder also had a divine kingdom. Its empress, like the Dawn Emperors, was a child of the gods.
Even the Dothraki Sea was not the original homeland of the horse lords.
In ancient times, the Dothraki Sea had truly been an inland sea, a vast silvery ocean, home to the legendary Kingdom of the Fisher Queen, possibly linked to the Drowned God or the Mother of Rivers (Lorath deity).
As for Westeros—there's little need to say more. It was the world of the Children of the Forest and the Old Gods.
Back then, giants and centaurs had their own kingdoms.
In addition to these famous, historically recorded ancient kingdoms, there were countless small realms founded by minor gods and demigod descendants.
The First Age was the golden age of the world of Ice and Fire.
Then came the First Long Night—a kind of Ragnarök—wiping out all divine kingdoms in a single calamity. The Dawn Empire, the Kingdom of the Fisher Queen, the Children of the Forest—all vanished in that era.
After the Long Night came the Second Age—what could be called the Silver Age.
Well, at least the early part deserved to be called "silver."But once Valyria fell, the dragons died out, and magic faded—it became an Age of Rust and Ruin.
The Second Age belonged to humans, specifically the Valyrians.
The gods withdrew, and humanity took center stage.
And the magical civilization the Valyrians built—with dragons and sorcery—nearly surpassed the gods, nearly outshone the First Age.
Unfortunately...
Daenerys was born at the very end of the Second Age—at the dawn of a coming catastrophe.
The Third Age would begin with her generation—either by following the path of technology and steampunk, or by continuing down the old road of magic, evolving into a more systematic and advanced magical civilization.Or perhaps, a fusion of both magic and technology.
Or maybe, the world would end in the Long Night, and there would be no Third Age at all.
Alright, maybe that's getting ahead of things.
The dragon egg of Big Black was from the previous age—before the Long Night—and belonged to a life form of the last era. It wasn't until the end of the Second Age that Daenerys finally hatched it.
Had it not been for the difference in eras and the changes in the world's laws, he should've been able to speak the Old Tongue from the moment he was born.
The Old Tongue was like an instinct, etched into the bloodline of the ancient dragons.
That is, until the encounter with the Rat Chef. As divine power within him grew stronger, it eventually broke through the constraints of the rules, and the black dragon regained the ability to speak.
Haltingly, with difficulty, he could only say one word—"Dany."
Yes, Big Black can now only say Daenerys's name.
Although he broke the rules and gained the ability to speak human language, he didn't inherit the instinctive command of the Old Tongue through his bloodline—his egg had completely fossilized, and the body he has now was reforged by Daenerys through flame.
Daenerys ought to find a Child of the Forest to be his teacher.
But at the time, she didn't even know that a language called the Old Tongue existed. She thought Big Black was speaking "Dragon Speech."
At first, she was enthusiastic, thinking she could learn this "more fundamental language, better suited for communicating with the sea of magic" alongside Big Black.
But after half a month had passed since they returned from the Long Night Keep to Slaver's Bay, and Big Black still could only say "Dany," she was furious.
—To think you're actually this stupid, Big Black!
And to think I always bragged about you being the top student of the "Rocket Class"!
Still, a good teacher leaves no student behind. Just because Big Black had fallen behind didn't mean she was going to give up on him.
Daenerys began teaching him the Common Tongue and Valyrian.
—Well, at least he can speak now. Since he can't speak Dragon Speech, he might as well learn human language!
Even ravens can speak human words—surely a dragon isn't less capable than a crow?
As it turns out, the reason Daenerys once saw Big Black as a top student was simply because "dragons are generally dumb." He had only appeared smarter in comparison to the even dumber Little White and Little Green.
Compared to humans, dragons learn language at a painfully slow pace.
Even in dragon-soul communion mode, Big Black could only learn one or two words per day—and forget them the next day.
In truth, Daenerys had misjudged him. Big Black wasn't stupid at all. In fact, after acquiring divinity, he showed potential to surpass human intelligence.
But he was only two years old. Given a dragon's lifespan of at least two hundred years, he still had decades to go before reaching adulthood!
Daenerys herself wasn't even as capable as him when she was that young!
Although Big Black didn't yet possess the intelligence to speak on his own, Daenerys could now borrow his mouth to speak.
In the past, when her main soul connected with Big Black's dragon spirit, she could only passively receive his sensory input—
Like hearing through his ears, seeing through his eyes, and smelling through his nose.
But she couldn't control his body.
Now, with the second soul granted by the complete Green Seer meditation method, Daenerys had evolved.
Using her second soul to commune with Big Black's dragon spirit, she could now exert limited control over his movements.
For example, right now, in her dragon-soul state, Daenerys was using Big Black's throat to speak aloud.
"You mortals are so utterly ignorant!" said the Daenerys-version of Big Black, shaking his massive head. His wings smashed through the wooden wall as he squeezed his upper body into the ship's cabin.
The massive oared vessel tilted dramatically, one side rising, the other sinking. Chairs, tables, and even the prone bodies of the Braavosi on the floor began sliding toward the black dragon.
Crash! Clatter! Smash!—The sounds of porcelain bottles and teacups shattering rang out continuously.
But everyone's minds had already been ensnared by the magic dragon. They could no longer perceive their surroundings.
"Magic Dragon, I have something to say—" cried the Overseer, clutching a pillar and howling at the top of his lungs.
"No need for excuses! I am the Dragon God—omniscient and omnipotent. Accept divine judgment!" Daenerys roared through Big Black's mouth, her voice shaking the heavens.
With a dragon's lung power, her voice carried waves of sulfur-tinged wind like a tempest, tousling the Overseer's wet hair and making everyone squint and groan from the pressure.
The thunderous sound of Big Black's roar spread hundreds of meters in every direction. It wasn't just those on the ship—everyone on the nearby shore, onlookers and soldiers alike, felt their eardrums throb from the blast.
"I'm innocent! Innocent, I tell you!" the Overseer cried out, face pale, nearly scared out of his wits by the divine and mighty dragon's roar.
Could it be... that Daenerys's dragon really had become a god? Otherwise, how could it speak?
(P.S.: In the original canon, only the Children of the Forest and ravens were said to speak the Old Tongue; it's unclear whether dragons could. I've made a change here—treating the Old Tongue as the universal language used by spiritual beings to sing praises to the world.)
After all, a dragon can't be less capable than a raven, right?
Well... in terms of danger sense, not as good as a dog (direwolf); in language aptitude, not as good as a bird (raven, Mormont's raven). Poor Big Black, what a frustrating fate...
