Game of Thrones: The Legend of Jon Arctic – ASOIAF/GOT GOT

Chapter 264: Chapter 264 - What does Westeros know about Arctic?

[Chapter Size: 3500 Words.]

---------------------------------------

Third Person POV

King's Landing, 298 AC.

---------------------------------------

A ship was approaching King's Landing at that moment, while its men began preparing to dock it at the port.

"Finally, we have arrived..." said a man beside Varys.

"Yes... after a few moons, we are finally back..." Varys said, with a strange feeling.

Six moons in Essos, in search of information that the king himself had ordered him to pursue, things were not going very well for his plan. He had a long conversation with Illyrio to speak for the first time.

Unsurprisingly, their conversation revolved around the Arcticans and the concern over how they were expanding across the continent of Essos, and even creating a great influence over Westeros, hidden while nobles sought their products, even paying more than they could with contracts that Jon initially proposed before breaking his relationship with the Seven Kingdoms, giving way to raids, deaths, and destruction from the battles that ensued.

At the same time, there were still those who believed it was a mistake to fight against the Arcticans when they could easily benefit from their trade, which had become a powerhouse in maritime routes.

The intelligent people knew very well Jon Arctic's power with it all, he had part of the Iron Bank itself in his name and now loans would be made with his endorsement along with the other 12 keyholders, even sending his Minister of Coin of the Kingdom of Arctic in his place to make decisions, and although they were a small number, their weight was growing as he continued to be the most powerful commercial man in the entire world.

It would not take long for the 12 keyholders to begin looking to his decisions before casting their votes, he would basically control all the Iron Bank's decisions, subtly inserting himself among them and leading all the other main members, after all, no one else wanted to be left behind someone so powerful.

Perhaps the Iron Bank initially thought it was making a good deal, but the outcome and the news that arrived in recent times, as well as his extra expedition across the Dothraki Sea, changed that.

There was no one who had not heard about his expedition and the turmoil in each city, where he simply created great businesses while those who tried to become his enemies were destroyed, as in the case of the most powerful house of Lys, which was destroyed simply because the eldest son of the noble tried to confront Jon Arctic himself, at the same time it wasn't even the Arcticans who provoked it, but rather the nobles themselves, taken by fear, who took the initiative to revolt against House Maerys, and were completely exterminated while the properties now belonged to the Arctican family.

Jon Arctic had not only proven to be powerful in trade, as seen in Lys, but all feared his strength. The same could be said of alliances, as he gained the favor of all the Red Priests of Essos after passing through Volantis, claiming that he was the legendary hero who would fight to save the world, as the news spread to this part of the world about why the entire religion of the Red God had turned in favor of Jon Arctic, with the exception of some priests, like the mysterious Red Woman who was at Dragonstone, claiming that this was not true and that the legendary hero was someone else.

Moreover, there are claims that Jon Arctic somehow entered Valyria and obtained an enormous fortune, such as the case of his legendary Valyrian steel armor that was seen when he fought against the Dothraki. This certainly encouraged many people to try the same, with their greed screaming for treasures that Jon Arctic had obtained in just one expedition, although there were not many details about it.

However, no one had returned since they tried to advance into the hot and chaotic lands of Valyria; no one had any knowledge of what was there, with no witnesses returning alive, all simply disappearing.

The news from Yi-Ti also took a while to arrive, as it came after Jon Arctic had already returned to his kingdom, while everyone was surprised by Jon Arctic entering the Yi-Ti war and forming an alliance, placing only twenty thousand Arctican men in favor of the Kouzuki family, leaders of Yi-Ti. Even though it was a somewhat irrelevant number compared to the armies on both sides, which were much larger, the news that came with the rumors was quite shocking.

They claimed that Jon Arctic was a commander like no other on the battlefield, defeating his enemies in many different ways, while his men were already a significant weight, making the Arcticans have a reputation of being worth two or three ordinary soldiers, each of them. Jon Arctic could devise strategies and study the battlefield like no other, with claims that he could use powers to see through his birds in the sky, since it was said that in all his travels two eagles, one blue and one red, followed him across the world.

He was also considered a genius in strategy, making moves on the battlefield that had not been seen for hundreds of years, seeming as if he was somehow learning from the past.

In the end, he not only liberated Yi-Ti, having the greatest participation in the liberation from the invaders who came from Jogos Nhai, but also forged an alliance with the main family of Yi-Ti, something no other Westerner had managed before. The news that the princess of Yi-Ti came with the Arcticans to marry the king of Arctic, and from what they had already heard from some Arctican men stopping to deliver their goods from the Free Cities, they were already married, and she was pregnant and about to give birth soon.

If the Seven Kingdoms were already full of gossip about it, with people looking at Jon Arctic with anger for what he had done to the city, to the Lannister ships, the Redwyne fleet, the royal fleet, and the defeat of King Robert Baratheon at the hands of the young king, who had even proven to defeat Barristan Selmy before. All eyes were turning with greater curiosity toward the man who became king beyond the Wall.

The Faith along with the maesters had immense anger against Jon Arctic, still claiming that he was a bastard, a fruit of sin, and that he was not trustworthy, and this might even make the common people see him as a monster, but the nobles began to look at him with surprising eyes, after all, even the bards were inspired by the story of a bastard becoming king, and this same man saving a kingdom and taking its princess as a wife.

This drew a lot of attention from maidens enchanted by the story, even though their septons clearly did not see it with good eyes, and some songs began to be played across the Seven Kingdoms, just like the first song made in honor of Jon Arctic, "Little Jon," which was the ballad of the North from ten years ago.

Recalling the courage of an eight-nameday boy and combining it with the fact that all this beginning would quickly turn into the path of glory for the young boy, transforming him into a miraculous king, in lands beyond the Wall, the greatest living sword, defeating all the greatest fighters of the Seven Kingdoms, an extremely powerful commander at sea, and later the greatest merchant in the world, proving his strategies by destroying enemies on battlefields on land or even dominating cities.

This last event occurred because Jon Arctic, after leaving Yi-Ti, launched a direct attack on Slaver's Bay as retaliation for the attacks that the slave masters had carried out in Volantis, nearly killing Arya Stark.

The Arcticans dominated all the cities at once and liberated all the slaves while destroying and seizing all the wealth of the slave master families.

The Red Priests themselves had aided the Arcticans after leaving the cities, even sending support from the kingdom itself to this location, and so they did when Jon Arctic returned to his kingdom at the same time Arya Stark returned home after more than seven years away, surprising everyone she had known since then.

In any case, aid was sent to Slaver's Bay, and everyone seemed surprised by the Arcticans basically taking control of the cities while creating a strategic point.

Then, after moons within Arctic, there were rumors that Jon Arctic was in the south of Northern Realm, according to commoners and nobles who were on an expedition with the Stark family through the kingdom and stopped at Greywater Watch.

Lastly, there was news that Jon Arctic stopped with forty-five thousand Arctican warriors in the north of Essos and advanced through the Dothraki Sea, destroying any enemy that stood in his way.

He defeated the two most powerful khalasars of the Dothraki, the khalasar of Khal Moro and the khalasar of Khal Drogo, as the latter claimed that Jon Arctic had stolen his bride and would attack the Free Cities. The King of Arctic himself went after him, proving to the world why everyone should fear him and Arctic, placing five thousand giants on the battlefield, destroying thousands of men even before they could reach the Arctican lines.

Everyone seemed jaw-dropped upon learning that there was a group of men who could shoot arrows more than six hundred meters away, arrows the size of harpoons that could pierce men and horses, being constantly launched by the giants. They could shoot about twelve arrows before the enemy reached them, meaning they could kill sixty thousand men in an open field before even having the chance to fight them.

This frightened all the commanders who thought about facing the Arcticans — what kind of force could counter this, other than choosing the best possible terrain and avoiding an open battlefield?

After that, there was no more news about Jon Arctic, except knowing that his commerce was expanding into lands Jon Arctic had not yet visited, like smaller cities around Essos, Lys after reestablishing a good relationship with Arctic, and even the Summer Islands, which became targets for trade routes promoted by the ministers of Arctic.

People wanted to understand how the kingdom's organization worked, but they had little success. First, they couldn't obtain important information from the Arcticans regarding the kingdom's products, nor could they insert spies among the men who controlled animals on the ships, catching anyone who tried to sneak aboard.

It was clear that the kingdom was extremely organized and very wealthy, which is why even the crown of Westeros wanted to understand what they could extract from them for their own benefit, yet they were unable to acquire this type of information.

The great powers of the Seven Kingdoms — or rather, the great players of the Game of Thrones — did not view this favorably. The influence of Arctic in the world was certainly troubling all of them: Olenna Tyrell, Tywin Lannister, Doran Martell, as well as the entire council, were beginning to see the monster that was being created, or rather, that was already enormous, but no one managed to see it in time before it grew out of their control.

No one could do anything.

They could only see the monster that was Arctic, growing even larger.

Their decisions and even their next moves began to be reconsidered, with the possibility of Arctic wanting to intervene in Westeros.

After all, Jon Arctic had family in Westeros.

Jon Arctic had enemies in Westeros.

And Jon Arctic had already challenged them all; he feared no one.

What would happen if the Arcticans launched an attack on the Seven Kingdoms?

They had the largest fleet in the world, proven.

It didn't matter how powerful the Greyjoy fleet was becoming.

It didn't matter how the Redwyne fleet was rising again.

They had a powerful land force with the numbers of an entire medium-sized kingdom, nearing fifty thousand men.

But all of them had the legendary Eldenmetal steel armor; there were the dwarves, who everyone began to understand were not just a large group of people with dwarfism, but truly a different race from humans — smaller, but much stronger than humans — and possessing weapons never before seen until Arctic used them in Oldtown, like the enemy arrow catchers.

And there were the giants... the giants were a force that made everyone tremble just at hearing about them, and the shocking news of there being five thousand of them being led by Jon Arctic from the Dothraki Sea certainly made everyone shudder, knowing they were all fully armored in Eldenmetal steel.

At the same time, the royal guards of Arctic became legends as they were seen fighting and as the stories were heard, now all wearing complete Valyrian steel armor and swords like the Arctican king himself, fighting at his side without any fear as they charged into enemies alongside their king.

Names like Tormund, Ben Viskote, Stone, Ziller, Tarsio Frost, Karmen, Jill, and Buri began to be heard as famous Arctican royal guards, their bravery and tales spreading through many parts of the world beyond Arctic.

The Arctican royal guards began to rival the seven kingsguards of Westeros, even here, while those who knew both firmly said that the Arctican royal guards were even more powerful, being the greatest warriors in the world.

There were also the animals, which were a force recognized by all, and Jon Arctic could control hundreds of wolves on the battlefield, fighting for him like no other Stark had done before him.

But there was the wolf who was already legendary, Ghost, whose name was well known. He wore full armor made for him and could crush a man with his paws. The only one who could command him was Jon Arctic.

Undoubtedly the most prominent figure in the Arctican army was its own king; there was no living sword that could defeat him in battle. From the Seven Kingdoms, defeating the greatest warriors here, as he had proven his skill against the First Sword of Braavos, had been challenged by the best samurais of Yi-Ti, and even the most feared Khals of this time had perished before Jon Arctic's sword.

No one had ever defeated him, so if everyone could finally have proof that there existed someone who could demonstrate their swordsmanship to the entire world, that would be Jon Arctic, who faced the most powerful people in the world regarding sword skills and never lost to any. He might not have fought some of the kingsguards or even names like the Blackfish, but he faced those with even more prestige than them.

He had his wolf, strange powers with animals, his Valyrian armor, and even a Valyrian steel sword that resembled the legendary sword Blackfyre, which personally made Varys frown at it for some reason more than anyone else who heard about it.

Jon Arctic had already proven himself to be an unbeatable commander, gathering all the information, he had proven to the entire world that he had wealth, fame, and power that no one could have ever imagined, surprising everyone with his lowly origin while rumors claimed he was blessed by the Old Gods.

It didn't matter how strong all the kingdoms were becoming with a royal decree to increase their armies.

It didn't matter that new forces were rising again, like the Faith Militant.

It didn't matter how the king himself reestablished by royal decree the manufacturing of wildfire to counter the enemy's wildfire.

What would happen if the Arcticans cut off all the credit that the Iron Bank could provide?

That would certainly cripple many people — how would they seek to finance their businesses, how could they negotiate plans, or even attempt to wage war without one of their main alternatives, the Iron Bank?

No matter how they played now, everyone had to pay attention to the North, to any of its movements, watching how that kingdom would react.

The Kingdom of Arctic was an enemy that had nothing to do with the Seven Kingdoms, yet it worried them as a real threat.

Varys sighed as the ship docked at the port; everyone with great power in Westeros had this information and more, while the common folk, even fearing Arctic, still listened to tales of its deeds and heard its songs.

Which was quite normal when they heard of just one man doing so many things while traveling the world, defeating his enemies and winning wars without ever being defeated.

But at the same time, Varys didn't seem to like it at all; he was more cautious than anyone. First, he still had to hide information about Daenerys Targaryen, who had been captured by Jon Arctic and had become queen. From what he heard through his spies, she was about to give birth to an heir of Jon Arctic, which would give Jon Arctic grounds to claim the Iron Throne.

If he had information that someone even more important than Daenerys for the throne existed, he would go mad knowing that Elia's daughter had two children with Jon Arctic, or even that Jon was Rhaegar's son. But he had no idea about that.

In any case, Varys was still playing for a player who had not yet appeared in the Seven Kingdoms but would soon make his appearance, and no one better to sit on the Iron Throne than his nephew...

He just had to prepare the ground for it, and somehow deal with Arctic, who was becoming such a dangerous problem that he was starting to see no way out except seeking an alliance.

Even so, he would work to eliminate this threat, would rally everyone against Arctic if he could. They might all fear him and even think twice before becoming his enemies, but if everyone... everyone united against only Arctic... he might have a chance to destroy them and not have to submit to Arctic.

Besides, Varys hated magic and wanted to destroy it.

His last plan also came through magic, ironically, having something that Arctic could not stop, but that would be a last resort and was growing on the other side of the ocean; they just had to keep them hidden from the world. All he needed now was to clear the path for his pretender to the throne, so he could conquer it as easily as possible.

Someone appeared at that moment, boarding the ship, and it was one of the people who hated Jon Arctic the most: Ser Boros Blount, who was no longer the same kingsguard after being beaten by Jon Arctic when he went to Highgarden. His face was still full of scars.

He had a broken jaw, half of his face twisted, a broken nose, and he never fully recovered, along with a half-open gaze, losing at least half of his vision.

"Lord Varys, the king demands your presence immediately, now that you are here. He wants the information about the Arcticans that you gathered from Essos, and demands you present it at the council," he said immediately.

"I understand... let's go then..." Varys replied, not surprised by this, after all, everyone wanted to gather any information about the king beyond the Wall. And the easier it was to deal with him using new information, the better for all of them.

Author here:

A chapter entirely dedicated to providing information about what Westeros knows about Arctic and how they generally perceive them. I hope I haven't left any aspect behind.

The next chapters will be focused on:

One for the council and how they discuss the information they have about Arctic, along with the beginning of Jon Arryn's death.

One chapter for Arya dealing with the assassin in Winterfell.

One chapter for Jon dealing with some free folk tribes trying to attack him, with him closing Arctic for war, ceasing to supply any more goods through the channel while they are at war, at the same time providing information about the number of Arctican soldiers with the addition of Mance's group to deal with the army of the dead.

I think I'll close this volume there. When I started writing about Valyria, I didn't think I would have to handle so many episodes up to this point, which is why I initiated the "Volume of Wars", but they will start now after these three chapters, so let's consider a new volume coming now with the Game of Thrones.

This volume, after the commerce arc, was meant to give information about the kingdom, tie loose ends, and even create alliances. Now we can focus fully on the wars.

The next chapter of the new volume will come with Robert heading to Winterfell to recruit Ned. But thinking about it, I believe I'll split the chapter that talks about Arctic and Jon before the war into two, because I want Jon to have a conversation with Ned in Winterfell, after all, it might be their last meeting together...
