Genshin Impact: I'm just a mortal

Chapter 234: Chapter 233: Drawing a Fortune Slip

"Are the contents of these light novels all based on real events?" Shen He pondered for a moment and asked the question that had been on her mind.

The answer wasn't hard to guess.

"Well… how about asking the person involved?" The corner of Yae Miko's mouth curled into a charming smile as she looked at Yu Xie.

"Cough, cough, um…" Yu Xie paused for a moment. "You all know, I don't remember anything from before, so I can't give an answer."

"That's true," Yae Miko smiled again, covering her mouth, then turned her gaze toward the divination and fortune-telling area nearby. "Since we're already here, why don't we try drawing a fortune? How about it?"

Yu Xie and Shen He exchanged glances but didn't answer immediately.

"Miss Shen He, would you like to try?" Yae Miko asked again. "As the head priest of the Narukami Shrine, I can responsibly say that our fortunes are very accurate. Otherwise, so many people wouldn't come here every day."

"Well... I'll give it a try," Shen He answered after a moment of hesitation.

"Then follow me," Yae Miko said, turning and walking ahead. Shen He followed her to the nearby divination area.

"Miss Shen He, please hold the Fortune Slip Box in your hands, focus on the question you wish to ask, and gently shake the Box," Yae Miko said, picking up the Box filled with bamboo sticks and handing it to Shen He.

Shen He held the Box in her hands but hesitated for a moment.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she glanced at Yu Xie before she began to gently shake the Box.

The sound of bamboo sticks clattering echoed, and one bamboo stick escaped from the Box, falling onto the table in front of Shen He.

Shen He stopped shaking the Box, set it down, and reached out to pick up the bamboo stick that had fallen.

"Aha, a good omen, it's an excellent sign," Yae Miko smiled.

Shen He looked at the bamboo stick in her hand, hesitated for a moment, and then glanced at Yu Xie out of the corner of her eye.

"Miss Shen He, you can go over there to interpret the sign," Yae Miko added.

"...It's fine. I think some things don't need to be made too clear," Shen He said after a moment of thought, then turned to face Yu Xie. "Yu Xie, would you like to try?"

"Sure, since we're here, it wouldn't hurt to give it a try," Yu Xie said, stepping forward to take the Box.

"What would you like to ask, Yu Xie?" Yae Miko couldn't help but ask.

"Well..." Yu Xie hesitated. To be honest, there wasn't anything particularly pressing he wanted to ask. If he had to choose something... it would be "fate," as that was what he cared about most.

With that thought in mind, Yu Xie began shaking the Box while focusing on the word "fate."

In the next moment, several bamboo sticks simultaneously shot out of the Box, falling onto the table.

This scene caused Yae Miko and Yu Xie to pause for a moment, while the passersby and the shrine maiden around them were all shocked.

It was the first time such an "accident" had happened at the Narukami Shrine.

Or perhaps, it wasn't an "accident" at all.

Yu Xie stared at the many bamboo sticks scattered across the table, a bit stunned himself.

Yae Miko snapped back to reality and immediately began inspecting the fallen sticks.

Without exception, all of them were good omens.

"Yu Xie, let me see the ones still left in the Box," Yae Miko said.

"Oh, sure, here," Yu Xie handed the Box to Yae Miko.

Taking the Box, Yae Miko suddenly smiled, as if pleased, yet with a hint of resigned helplessness.

The bamboo sticks remaining in the Box were all bad omens.

It seemed that this wasn't an accident at all, but rather the outcome of Yu Xie's original request.

"I must have shaken it too hard and accidentally let so many fall out. Let me try again," Yu Xie said, reaching to pick up the sticks from the table.

"No need to try again. If you did, the result would be the same," Yae Miko replied. "If it were just an accident, not all the sticks would be good omens."

"This can only mean..." Shen He looked at Yu Xie, her words trailing off.

Some things didn't need to be explicitly stated.

Yu Xie felt a deep sense of reflection at this moment, wanting to say something but unsure where to begin.

Some things were truly destined, just like the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, or the changing of the seasons—things that couldn't be altered.

........

In the afternoon, Yu Xie and Shen He left the Narukami Shrine and walked down the mountain path.

The scenery was beautiful, with a gentle breeze brushing against their faces.

Admiring the scenery while slowly descending the mountain should have been a pleasant experience, but Yu Xie's thoughts were elsewhere.

He couldn't help but recall the scene during the fortune-telling earlier.

All the good omens seemed to have a will of their own, and they all flew out of the Box.

This could no longer be described as an accident.

Walking side by side with Yu Xie, Shen He naturally noticed his distracted mood and couldn't help but ask:

"Yu Xie, are you thinking about what happened during the fortune-telling just now?"

Shen He's voice brought Yu Xie's thoughts back to the present. He turned to look at her, and he hesitated for a moment before speaking.

Shen He's clear, pure gaze made Yu Xie's heart grow even more complicated.

"Yeah, I'm thinking about those sticks..."

"I don't believe that was an accident," Shen He said, sensing Yu Xie's hesitation. She took the initiative to continue, "It was meant to be like that."

Yu Xie looked into Shen He's eyes, the wind blowing through the mountains. He suddenly smiled, as if letting go of something. "If it was meant to be, then in my past lives, I must have saved the world."

"Perhaps you don't need to save the world. Just saving the world in someone's heart is enough," Shen He said, and inwardly she couldn't help but think—just like how, unknowingly, you saved my world.

Shen He's words made Yu Xie's expression freeze for a moment, and he fell into silence.

It seemed like he suddenly understood.

So many fates hadn't come to him without reason.

If you hadn't caused it, how could there be any consequences?

You must take responsibility!

.......

Meanwhile, the current Divine Priestess of Watatsumi Island sat in her study, her mind occupied with many thoughts.

The dreamlike image suddenly appeared in the minds of every resident of Watatsumi Island, revealing the truth to them all. The peace talks were successful, and the war had ended.

Watatsumi Island retained its autonomy and could continue to offer sacrifices to Orobashi in the name of "The Great Deity of Watatsumi."

Such an outcome was already quite good.

Yet, for some reason, Kokomi felt as though something was blocking her heart.

She thought about it a lot but couldn't figure out why.

After much contemplation, she decided to go for a walk.

Leaving her study, she walked in front of the Sangonomiya Palace. The priestesses and soldiers who saw her respectfully bowed, and Kokomi returned a smile.

"Where is Lord Sangonomiya going?" one of the priestesses asked with some concern.

"I'm just going for a walk. No need to worry," Kokomi replied.

"Understood, Lord Sangonomiya. Please be careful. If you need guards, I can arrange them right away..."

"No need, I can go alone. The war is over, no need to be so sensitive." Kokomi smiled helplessly.

"Alright then... please, Lord Sangonomiya, do stay safe."

"I will." Kokomi gave a slightly helpless smile and left the Sangonomiya Palace.

As she walked along the path, Kokomi suddenly felt a bit lonely being by herself.

Soon after, Yu Xie's figure unexpectedly appeared in her mind without warning.
