Chapter 38: Chapter 038: Barbara, the Deaconess of Favonius

Shao Yun was surrounded by Amber, Noelle, and Lisa, all of whom were curious and puzzled about how he had managed to scare the thief "Raptor" into madness.

"Do you really need to dig so deep? I've been rushing back from Springvale with him without a moment's rest," Shao Yun waved his hand impatiently, signaling them to calm down.

Amber stared at Shao Yun's calm face, her heart racing like an ant on a hot pan. In her urgency, her words came out fast, laced with disbelief.

"How can I stay calm? That's the Raptor! He's been on the Knights of Favonius' wanted list for years! The Knights have spent so much time and effort trying to catch him!"

(TL/N: i smell corruption)

"I only mentioned him to you this morning, and in just a few minutes, you've already tied him up and brought him back!"

It wasn't just a few minutes, but Shao Yun didn't bother correcting her exaggeration.

Lisa, on the other hand, was genuinely curious. The Raptor had quite a reputation and was no pushover. How had he ended up in Shao Yun's hands? She was intrigued.

"Tell us the story, and I'll treat you to morning tea, okay?"

(TL/N: I prefer morning head 💀)

Without waiting for Shao Yun's response, Lisa went to the administrator's desk to prepare the tea.

"Me too!" Amber and Noelle chimed in unison before rushing off to help.

The three of them worked efficiently: Amber set up the table and tea set, Noelle sliced and plated the freshly baked scones, and Lisa boiled water and brewed tea using a special small stove.

Once everything was ready, they all turned their expectant gazes toward Shao Yun.

"You guys… fine, I'll tell the story." Seeing how much effort they'd put into this, Shao Yun decided to indulge them, especially since morning tea was involved.

Lisa, her eyes smiling, pushed Shao Yun to sit down and poured him a cup of tea, eagerly waiting for him to begin.

Shao Yun took a sip to moisten his throat and gestured for the three to sit as he began his tale.

"Alright, for the sake of the tea, I'll tell you the story."

He started from the beginning: meeting Lumine and Amber, accepting the commission, riding to Springvale following the elemental traces, rescuing the man surrounded by Hilichurls, dealing with the Treasure Hoarders, and finally lassoing the Raptor. He made sure to include every detail.

The journey back with the Raptor was the highlight. Shao Yun acted out the scenes vividly while munching on snacks.

"I was thinking about what to buy Paimon for dinner when that guy started yapping nonstop behind me on the horse."

At this point, Shao Yun put his hands on his hips, mimicking his annoyed expression.

"So, every time he started boasting, I punched him." He threw a punch into the air, and just from his movements, the three could feel the force behind it.

"Finally, since I was just passing the time, I started hitting him with every breath he took."

Shao Yun clapped his hands dramatically. "And just like that, he was completely subdued."

The three women were stunned, staring at Shao Yun in disbelief.

Lisa, in particular, was so shocked that she didn't notice the tea overflowing from the cup she was pouring.

"Hey, hey, the tea's overflowing, Lisa!"

Shao Yun's reminder snapped Lisa out of her daze, and she quickly wiped up the spilled tea.

Seeing their reactions, Shao Yun spread his arms and asked, "In my hands, even a statue would sing its secrets."

"Since we needed him alive and talking, I gave him a little lesson to save the Knights the trouble of interrogation. Isn't that helpful?"

Shao Yun had essentially used the legendary "big memory restoration technique"!

Lisa, Amber, and Noelle exchanged awkward smiles. As absurd as it sounded, it did make some sense.

With the Raptor story out of the way, there was another important matter.

Noelle scratched her head cutely and asked, "By the way, was the Raptor really the one who stole the Holy Lyre?"

Shao Yun shook his head lightly. "No idea," he said before taking a bite of a scone.

Noelle thought she'd misheard.

"No idea? Didn't you confirm it, Mr. Shao Yun?"

Shao Yun swallowed the scone and explained, "What I said was, 'This guy stole something from the Cathedral. I caught him!' Who knew people would twist it into me catching the Holy Lyre thief?"

Only Jean, Diluc, Venti, Lumine, Paimon, and Shao Yun knew about the Holy Lyre being in their possession.

The three women's faces darkened. They had thought the Holy Lyre thief had finally been caught.

"Why do you all look so disappointed? Catching the Raptor still solves a big problem for the Knights, doesn't it?"

Lisa quickly put on a relaxed smile and waved her hand.

"Oh, we're not disappointed at all. You're the hero here. Let me pour you another cup of tea."

---

With the story told and the morning tea finished, Noelle curtsied gracefully.

"Thank you for the tea, Miss Lisa. I have some tasks to attend to, so I'll take my leave now."

Amber, seeing Noelle leave, set down her teacup and remembered she had her own duties to attend to.

"I should get going too. The Knights have a lot of work to do."

As she turned to leave, Shao Yun quickly asked, "Amber, do you know where Lumine and Paimon are?"

Amber tapped her chin, trying to recall.

"I remember Lumine left after her flight exam. She didn't say where she was going, but you'll probably see her at my place tonight."

"Thanks."

Now Shao Yun was left with nothing to do again.

If there's nothing to do, find something to do. He helped Lisa clean up.

"Lisa, you don't mind if I hang around here for a while, do you?"

"The library welcomes visitors. Feel free to read whatever you like, but don't damage the books."

So Shao Yun picked up a random book and sat in a corner of the library to kill time.

Most of Mondstadt's books were filled with poetry. After a while, Shao Yun found himself almost singing the verses aloud.

Feeling stifled, he realized he wasn't cut out for reading. He put the book back and decided to step out for some fresh air.

As he left, he noticed a girl in a white nun's outfit with twin tails standing nervously in front of Jean's office, unsure whether to knock.

Shao Yun walked up behind her and asked, "Hello, are you looking for Acting Grand Master Jean?"

The girl, startled, turned around with wide eyes. Her heart raced as if it might leap out of her chest.

When she saw Shao Yun standing behind her, her tense expression softened slightly. She took a deep breath to calm herself and smiled.

"Hello."

Shao Yun took a closer look. Wasn't this Barbara, the Deaconess of the Favonius Church? What was she doing here?

Seeing Barbara's nervous demeanor, Shao Yun tried to reassure her.

"Don't be so nervous. I'm not a bad guy. I just noticed you've been standing here for a while…"

Barbara pointed at the office door and explained, "Haha, I'm here to see my sis— I mean, Acting Grand Master Jean about something."

Shao Yun scratched his head. Why was Barbara so nervous? It wasn't like she and Jean were estranged. Sure, their parents were divorced, but they weren't enemies.

"I get it. Why don't you just go in and talk to her?"

Though he didn't fully understand the situation, he respected her choice of words. After all, it was her family matter.

Seeing Shao Yun hesitate, Barbara sighed. "You heard that, huh?"

"Never mind the titles. By the way, let me introduce myself. I'm Tacit— oh, no, I'm Shao Yun."

Since Barbara wasn't an enemy, there was no need for a fake name. He decided to tell her his real name.

"Hello, Mr. Shao Yun. I'm Barbara, the Deaconess of the Favonius Church." After introducing herself, she explained why she was here.

"I heard someone caught the thief who stole the Holy Lyre."

Shao Yun looked at Barbara in shock, his face filled with surprise and confusion. He hadn't expected the news to reach the Church so quickly.

"What? The news spread that fast?" Shao Yun's voice carried a hint of disbelief.

Barbara nodded sincerely. "The Holy Lyre is a precious artifact used by Lord Barbatos. It's very important. As soon as I heard, I came here, hoping to find it quickly."

At this, she sighed deeply, looking at the office door, and voiced her concern.

"But I heard Acting Grand Master Jean is very busy, so I've been unsure whether to disturb her."

So she was worried about bothering Jean, not because of any sisterly awkwardness.

"Well, you don't need to disturb Acting Grand Master Jean. You can ask me. I'm the one who caught the Raptor."

Barbara's eyes lit up when she heard that Shao Yun had caught the Raptor. Her face showed rare determination and urgency as she asked, "What about the Holy Lyre? Is it safe?"

Shao Yun, seeing the anxiety in Barbara's eyes, awkwardly replied, "He didn't steal the Holy Lyre…"

Barbara's face fell. "Oh…"

"But…" Shao Yun pulled out the stolen artifact jar from his backpack and handed it to Barbara. "He did steal this. So your trip wasn't entirely in vain."

Barbara looked at the jar in her hands, her expression complex. As Shao Yun said, she hadn't come away empty-handed.

"Thank you, Mr. Shao Yun."

Barbara thanked him and turned to leave, but Shao Yun, worried she might mention his name, quickly added, "When you report back to the Church, just say the Knights gave it to you. Please don't mention my name."

"Huh?"

Doing good deeds without leaving a name could mean either high moral character or some hidden reason for anonymity.

But Barbara wasn't in the mood to speculate about Shao Yun's identity, so she agreed.

"Alright."

As Shao Yun watched Barbara's retreating figure, he couldn't help but call out, "Be careful on your way back!"

"Oh, okay. Thank you."
