Chapter 678: The Secret Chambers

The main hall was well ventilated, allowing the bright light from outside to shine on the ornate decor inside the room. The moment Noah stepped into the room, he felt a rush of cool, calming sensation of serenity washing over his body.

The hall stretched upwards like a conical structure from the inside. The pillars in the hall had a mirror shine inscribed with strange symbols that gave off a powerful aura and spiraled upwards like vines climbing up.

The roof was painted with ancient murals, faded and worn with time. The image of Buddha fighting against demons and evil cultivators.

Noah looked around the room and saw several prayer cushions placed on the ground in an arranged manner. On the right, he saw a large ceremonial bronze gong and a carved wooden fish drum.

Both of them were used for rituals in the morning and the evening, but there was no one to use them in this place.

To the left were rows of tables with several offerings: incense sticks, silver prayer bowls, and folded silk prayer flags arranged neatly on them.

Finally he turned to look at the far end of the room, where the grand idol of Buddha sat upon a towering lotus pedestal. It was carved from a white jade, and golden streaks that looked like veins reflected light in the room.

The idol was colossal, over 20 feet tall. His robes, like flowing silk, fell from his chest and layered across his legs. His right hand was raised before his chest, in the abhaya mudra.

It was a gesture of fearlessness.

His left hand gently rested on his lap, palm facing the ceiling, holding a small alms bowl.

His face was otherworldly and calm; his half-lidded eyes and his gentle smile that was free of joy and sorrow made others feel a sense of security.

The light from the sun directly fell on the idol from behind, giving it a very ethereal, divine look. Due to the shape of the window behind the idol, the sunlight looked like a halo.

Xu Tianhua looked at the idol, lost in his thoughts, while the other examined the room carefully, looking for some kind of opportunity hidden in the weird texts carved on the wall or checking if the gong and the fish drum were artifacts instead of normal praying instruments.

Lei Yiran stared at one of the pillars with a narrowed gaze, but his attention was somewhere else. 'What is he doing?'

From the corner of his eyes, he stared at Noah, who was watching everyone search the room with an unconcerned gaze.

'Does he know something? Or does he want to use us to eliminate the traps and us at the same time?'

His thoughts spiraled pessimistically, but not once did he think Noah did not care about the treasure itself. After all, no one in their right mind would not care about treasures and scripts that belonged to the legendary figures of the past.

While he was lost in thought, staring at Noah, he forgot to look away and saw the man looking back at him. Startled, he snapped his back towards the pillar, looking at it so intently, like the secret of immortality was inscribed on it.

He tried to look again, stealthily, and sighed in relief when he saw Noah was no longer looking at him. Out of curiosity, he followed his gaze and saw him looking at Xu Tianhua.

The monk was making his way towards the offering tables and carefully picked up three slender incense sticks from a box carved with a lotus image. Walking in front of the idol, he bowed slightly before raising the sticks upright, right in front of his brows, and prayed silently.

Once done, he walked up to the bronze incense cauldron stand placed before the altar. He used the ever-burning fire placed in the middle of the cauldron to light up the sticks and raised them back up.

Waving the sticks in the air, he muttered something under his breath, and once the fire on the sticks died down, he placed them in the incense burner and bowed to the idol.

Stepping back, he bowed once more without turning his back to the idol. By the time he finished, everyone was looking at him.

Even the younger disciple, who followed him silently like a shadow, stared at him with deep emotions in his eyes.

Clank!

When Xu Tianhua's offering finished, something unexpected happened. The wall behind the statue snapped open as if he had triggered some kind of hidden switch.

Or maybe his actions were the trigger that led to the opening of the gates.

Xu Tianhua looked at the open gates to the secret chambers with a surprised look on his face.

"What are you thinking about?" Hearing a familiar voice, he turned around to see Noah and Elysia walking towards him. "Go on. You opened it, so you have the right to enter first."

"Indeed, Senior Xu." Before Lei Yiran's brows could touch each other, Xian Mei also chimed in with her approval. "No one would have found this place without your devotion."

Xu Tianhua looked at each of their expressions before smiling warmly, "Then I won't be polite. Thank you, everyone."

With a slight bow of gratitude, Xu Tianhua stepped towards the open gates. Inside the gates he could see nothing but endless darkness and only two steps of stairs leading to the basement.

He looked back last time and walked inside fearlessly.

"Senior Brother Xu is really lucky." Xian Mei muttered as she glanced at the other monk, signaling him to go next. The monk looked surprised, but with a smile of gratitude, he walked forward.

"You can go in first." Seeing her looking at him, Noah showed no haste in entering the room. Then, without even looking at Lei Yiran, she entered the room.

This left the young man fuming so much that he ignored Noah and rushed after her with heavy steps.

"You can also go." Noah looked at the last guy left in the room, who jumped back in fear, realizing that he was the one being pointed out.

"M-me?" he asked stupefyingly, pointing at himself. Noah neither agreed nor denied and merely smiled at him and scared the man shitless, so much so that he ran towards the dark room.

Once they were left alone, Noah glanced at Elyisa and raised his hand with a warm smile, "Shall we?"

"Of course, my dear," with a smile of her own, Elysia bowed like an elegant lady and took his hand with grace.

As Noah stepped into the darkness, everything around him seemed to have lost its colors. He felt a wave of familiar energy wash over him. He felt his senses shifting; the warm hand in his grasp seemed to fade away, leaving a sense of loneliness.

The next moment, Noah felt warm rays of sun hitting him in the face. Blinking his eyes, he found himself standing in the middle of a road. He looked down at his hand and felt his vision flickering before it stabilized. 'Is this an illusion?'

"Sir? Did you hear me?" Hearing the voice from the front, Noah raised his head and looked at the guard dressed in a dark brown uniform, his eyes sharp, filled with annoyance. He was holding a parchment and a quill in his hands and looked at Noah as if he was waiting for something.

"What did you say?" Noah asked crisply.

"I asked, do you intend to stay for the short term in the Aradonia city? Or do you have plans for a longer stay?" Despite feeling annoyance, the guard spoke firmly once more, leaving Noah in thought.
