God Of Racing

Chapter 13: The Melancholy Youth

"Hehe, I can't believe Chongqing has such talent. Fearless, driven - I like it! Very impressive. I must get my hands on this gem," the director thought. "Zhang, let's head back."

Contrary to appearances, Zhuifeng was far from fearless. His face was pale, and if faced with the same situation again, he wouldn't dare repeat his actions.

"Big sis? Are you alright?" After a long silence, Zhuifeng grew concerned. She was a customer, after all, and despite his annoyance, he had to look after her. That's what made him such a good young man.

"I... I..." she stammered.

"What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" He quickly reached for the first-aid kit with one hand.

"I... I swear I'll never ride with you maniacs again!" Some color finally returned to her face.

"Phew... you scared me! I thought you were having a heart attack or an asthma attack!" Zhuifeng mimicked her earlier gesture, patting his chest. "You call us maniacs? Who was it that said it was exciting earlier?" He felt annoyed, realizing she had managed to have it both ways.

"Wow, still ten minutes before the meeting! How did we get here so fast?" Unable to respond, she started fiddling with her phone, then shrieked again when she saw the time.

"Hehe, well, you should see who's driving," Zhuifeng said, a hint of pride in his voice.

"That's true, a maniac indeed!" she retorted.

"You..." Zhuifeng was speechless at her smugness. But then, grinning to himself, he thought, "You dare laugh at me?" He began to pump the brake pedal, making the car bounce rhythmically.

The woman's face immediately paled again. "You... I'm sorry, please stop!"

Zhuifeng mused to himself, "Looks like you can't be too nice to women, or they'll walk all over you. Sometimes you need to teach them a lesson. Haha..."

With a final screech of the brakes, they stopped. "We're here. See? Not late, are you?"

The woman threw some money at him and got out without a word.

"Hey, you're not really angry, are you?" Feeling he might have gone too far, Zhuifeng called out the window.

"Who's angry? I just need to go to the restroom to freshen up!" She glared back at him.

Only then did Zhuifeng take a good look at her. Her hair was a mess, clothes wrinkled, and makeup smudged. Stifling a laugh, he called out, "Ahem... I think this look suits you! Haha... See you, big sis! Bye!" He drove off, leaving behind the fuming woman who darted away like a gust of wind.

...

"Hey, Zhuifeng! Didn't you say you were going to Qijiang? How are you back so soon?"

"Took the highway," Zhuifeng replied.

"Highway?" The old man responsible for parking the taxis each day was puzzled. "Just over an hour? That's so fast!"

"Well..." Zhuifeng didn't know how to explain.

"My goodness, young man, what happened to you?"

Zhuifeng looked himself over, not seeing anything amiss.

"I mean, what happened to your car? Look at the state of these tires!"

Zhuifeng felt a chill run down his spine. Damn, how could he have forgotten about that? These were ordinary tires, meant to last two or three years under normal conditions. But after what he'd put them through... Looking at the pitiful state of the tires, he could only laugh awkwardly and say, "I'm not sure... Maybe these tires were defective?" If his second brother heard this, he'd be furious. After all, this was their family's product. But in Zhuifeng's mind, he probably didn't consider that place family anymore...

"Uncle, I've got something to do. I've got to run." It was best to leave quickly before he got an earful.

After inspecting the car, the old man was almost in tears. How had that kid been driving? The entire car was nearly falling apart, with some bolts missing entirely. This car would need a major overhaul, and it was less than two months old! Could it really be a quality issue with the car itself? The old man looked at it, bewildered...

"Brother Shen."

"You're back? Everything alright?"

"Brother Shen, I... I've come to resign." Although his salary was earned through his own hard work, this opportunity had been given to him by others. Moreover, over these past days, Brother Shen had looked after him like his own second brother. Now, to leave so abruptly, Zhuifeng felt truly apologetic.

"Mm, here you go." Shen handed him an envelope.

Zhuifeng took it. "Thank you for taking care of me this past month, Brother Shen."

"Don't mention it. You know about my relationship with your brother. Don't be so formal. You're going to register at Chongqing University tomorrow, right? Good luck! If you have any difficulties, come to the company. Your brother specifically instructed this. I'll be returning to school with him in a few days and probably won't be back until the end of the year. So if you need anything, contact the person on the business card in the envelope."

"I understand. Goodbye, Brother Shen."

After saying goodbye to a few other employees he was close with, Zhuifeng left the company. He looked up at the sky and closed his eyes. "University life, here I come!"

Back in his rented room, Zhuifeng pondered what preparations he should make for school. It was his first time, after all. He decided to call his older brother.

"Little Feng, is everything alright? Where are you?" His brother sounded worried as soon as he picked up.

"It's nothing major, brother. I just wanted to ask what I should prepare for school. I don't know what to do, so I thought..." He felt a bit embarrassed, being seventeen or eighteen and still needing to ask.

"Haha... How about this? You're at your place, right? I'll come over right away."

"Brother, won't that waste your time? You don't need to come. Just tell me what to do... Hello? Hello?" The line went dead.

Hanging up, Zhuifeng looked around the room he'd lived in for over a month, which still felt cold and empty. His heart churned with mixed emotions - his brother's kindness, Uncle Wang's care, and his parents' indifference all tangled together.

Sighing, he thought, "Why am I dwelling on this? Don't I still have my brother, Brother Shen, Uncle Wang, and their kindness? I should be grateful..."

Lost in these thoughts, Zhuifeng gradually drifted off to sleep on the sofa...
