GOT: House Redwyne

Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Cost of Ambition

The Arbor bustled with activity as the ships of House Redwyne's fleet returned from their voyages across the Narrow Sea. The docks were crowded with sailors unloading goods—casks of wine, bales of fine silk, crates of exotic spices, and precious metals. The wealth of the Arbor had always been tied to its vineyards, but under Lord Paxter Redwyne's leadership, the family's influence was expanding far beyond the island's shores.

In the great hall of the keep, the air was filled with the scent of roasted meat and freshly baked bread, mingling with the tang of salt from the sea. The hall was filled with the sound of voices—merchants and captains, advisors and scribes—each one eager to secure their place in the growing empire that Paxter was building.

At the head of the long table, Paxter Redwyne sat with Lady Mina by his side, listening intently to the reports being presented. The power of the shadows now coursed through him, giving him an edge in his dealings that few could match. But he had learned to keep this power hidden, wielding it only when necessary, and never revealing the true extent of the darkness he had embraced.

"The new trade routes to the Free Cities are yielding significant profits, my lord," one of the merchants was saying, unrolling a map to show the routes their ships had taken. "Our wine is in high demand, as always, but we've also established lucrative trade in luxury goods—jewels, silks, and spices. The wealth we're bringing in rivals that of the greatest houses in Westeros."

Paxter nodded, pleased with the progress. "And what of our holdings in the Reach? How do they fare?"

Another advisor stepped forward, a man with graying hair and a shrewd expression. "Our estates are flourishing, my lord. The vineyards are producing record yields, and we've expanded our holdings in the wine trade. However, there is talk of tension between the Gold Bank and some of the smaller merchant houses. They resent the Gold Bank's dominance and are looking for an alternative."

Paxter's eyes narrowed in thought. The Gold Bank was a powerful institution, controlling vast amounts of wealth and wielding influence over the crown itself. But Paxter had always seen the potential to rival them, to build House Redwyne into a force that could stand against even the mightiest of financial powers.

"Is there an opportunity to gain their favor?" Paxter asked, leaning forward slightly.

The advisor nodded. "Indeed, my lord. If we offer favorable terms on loans and trade agreements, we could attract these merchant houses to our side. With their support, we could undermine the Gold Bank's position and slowly erode their influence."

Paxter considered the proposal, his mind already working through the possibilities. The Gold Bank had long been the dominant financial power in Westeros, but they had grown complacent, confident in their unassailable position. Paxter knew that with careful planning and the right alliances, House Redwyne could challenge that dominance and carve out a place for themselves at the top.

"Begin negotiations with the merchant houses," Paxter ordered. "Offer them terms that the Gold Bank would refuse, and ensure that they understand the benefits of aligning with House Redwyne. But be subtle—this must be done quietly, without drawing too much attention."

The advisor bowed, clearly impressed by Paxter's decisiveness. "It will be done, my lord."

As the meeting continued, Paxter's thoughts drifted to the future. The power he had claimed from the Shadowbinder had given him an edge in the game of politics, but it had also made him more ambitious, more determined to see House Redwyne rise to heights it had never before imagined. The shadows were a tool, a means to an end, and Paxter intended to use them to their fullest potential.

Lady Mina, sensing his distraction, leaned in close. "You're thinking about the Gold Bank, aren't you?"

Paxter turned to her, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips. "I am. We've built something incredible here, Mina, but I want more. I want House Redwyne to be the most powerful family in Westeros, not just in wine and trade, but in wealth and influence. The Gold Bank has had a stranglehold on the realm for too long. It's time for a change."

Mina's eyes sparkled with understanding. She had always supported Paxter's ambitions, and she knew that his vision for the future was what set him apart from other lords. "We'll need to be careful. The Gold Bank is not without its own resources and allies. They won't take kindly to being challenged."

Paxter nodded. "I'm aware. But we have something they don't—a connection to the shadows, a power they can't begin to comprehend. We'll use that power to our advantage, but we'll do it carefully, strategically. We can't afford to make mistakes."

Mina reached out and took his hand, her grip firm and reassuring. "We'll succeed, Paxter. We've come this far, and we'll go further still. Together."

Paxter squeezed her hand, grateful for her unwavering support. "Together," he agreed.

The rest of the meeting passed in a blur of plans and strategies, discussions of trade routes and alliances, of ships to be built and deals to be struck. But through it all, Paxter's mind remained focused on the larger goal—the eventual downfall of the Gold Bank and the rise of House Redwyne as the preeminent power in Westeros.

As the meeting concluded and the hall emptied, Paxter remained seated, staring into the fire that crackled in the hearth. The shadows danced along the walls, their movements reflecting the thoughts that swirled in his mind. The power he had claimed was intoxicating, but it was also dangerous. He had to tread carefully, to use it wisely, or risk losing everything he had worked so hard to build.

A knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts, and he looked up as Maester Ferris entered, a scroll in hand. The old maester's face was lined with worry, and Paxter knew immediately that something was amiss.

"My lord," Ferris began, his voice tense, "I have received a raven from one of our agents in Braavos. It seems that the Gold Bank is aware of our movements. They've begun to take steps to counter our influence in the Reach."

Paxter's expression darkened. The Gold Bank was not a foe to be underestimated, and if they had caught wind of his plans, it meant that they were already moving to protect their interests. He had expected resistance, but not so soon.

"What steps have they taken?" Paxter asked, his tone clipped.

"They've begun offering more favorable terms to the merchant houses, lowering interest rates on loans and extending lines of credit," Ferris explained. "They're also pressuring some of the more powerful houses to remain loyal, threatening to call in debts if they switch their allegiance to us."

Paxter's mind raced. The Gold Bank was playing a dangerous game, one that could destabilize the entire region if they weren't careful. But Paxter had no intention of backing down. This was a battle for control, for dominance, and he was prepared to fight with everything he had.

"Send word to our agents," Paxter ordered. "We'll match the Gold Bank's offers, and then some. We can't afford to lose the support of the merchant houses. And reach out to our allies in the Free Cities—see if they're willing to apply some pressure of their own."

Ferris nodded, his expression serious. "It will be done, my lord. But be careful. The Gold Bank is a powerful enemy, and they won't hesitate to use every weapon at their disposal."

"I know," Paxter replied, his voice cold. "But we have weapons of our own. And we're not afraid to use them."

As Ferris left to carry out his orders, Paxter turned back to the fire, his thoughts once again focused on the future. The Gold Bank had made the first move, but Paxter was ready to respond. The game was on, and he intended to win, no matter the cost.

The shadows were his to command, and he would use them to outmaneuver the Gold Bank at every turn. House Redwyne would rise to power, and nothing—no enemy, no rival—would stand in their way.

For House Redwyne, for the Arbor, and for the future of Westeros, Paxter would see this through to the end. The battle for wealth and power had only just begun, and Paxter was ready to claim victory.
