GOT: House Redwyne

Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Under the Vine

The Arbor basked in the gentle glow of the afternoon sun, the vineyards stretching out in every direction like a sea of green. The winds were calm, carrying the sweet scent of ripening grapes through the air. But beneath this idyllic surface, the tension from the previous weeks lingered, as though the land itself held its breath, waiting for the next move in the game of power that Paxter Redwyne found himself entangled in.

Paxter sat in his study, a room filled with ancient scrolls and maps that told the story of his family's long history. The Redwyne crest—a cluster of grapes on a white field—was emblazoned above the hearth, a symbol of the wealth and influence his house had cultivated over generations. But Paxter knew that this legacy, built on the bounties of the Arbor, was now intertwined with something far more volatile: the shifting alliances and growing ambitions that threatened to reshape the Reach.

A knock at the door broke through his thoughts, and Ser Martyn Harte entered, his expression serious. "My lord, we've received new intelligence from our agents. It appears the Tarlys are preparing to move north, towards the Mander. They've increased their patrols and are fortifying key positions along the river."

Paxter's brow furrowed as he absorbed the news. "The Mander is the lifeblood of the Reach. If the Tarlys are securing control over it, they're not just positioning themselves defensively—they're preparing to assert their dominance over the region."

Martyn nodded. "That's what it looks like, my lord. If they control the Mander, they can effectively cut off trade and supplies to anyone they see as a threat."

The implications were clear. The Tarlys, once reliable allies of the Tyrells, were beginning to act independently, leveraging their military strength to carve out a greater role for themselves in the Reach. It was a move that could upset the delicate balance of power, especially if Lady Olenna Tyrell's influence began to wane.

"Have there been any signs that the Tyrells are aware of the Tarlys' movements?" Paxter asked.

"None that we've seen," Martyn replied. "It's possible they know and are allowing it, but it's just as likely that the Tarlys are acting without direct orders from Highgarden. Either way, it's a dangerous game they're playing."

Paxter leaned back in his chair, the gravity of the situation pressing down on him. The Tarlys were a formidable house, with a well-earned reputation for military prowess. If they were beginning to challenge the Tyrells' control of the Reach, House Redwyne could find itself caught in the crossfire.

But Paxter was not one to be caught off guard. He had always prided himself on his ability to anticipate and adapt, to see the patterns in the chaos that so often defined the politics of Westeros.

"We need to be proactive, Martyn," Paxter said, his voice resolute. "We can't allow the Tarlys to gain too much ground. Begin fortifying our own positions along the Mander, especially near our key ports. If the Tarlys want to play this game, we'll show them that House Redwyne is not to be trifled with."

Martyn bowed. "As you command, my lord. I'll see to it immediately."

As Martyn left to carry out his orders, Paxter turned his thoughts to the broader picture. The Tarlys' ambitions were a threat, but they also presented an opportunity—an opportunity for House Redwyne to strengthen its own position in the Reach, to become not just a vassal of the Tyrells, but a power in its own right.

He knew that such a move would require more than just military strength. It would require alliances, both within the Reach and beyond. And that meant reaching out to those who had reason to fear or mistrust the Tarlys' growing power.

Paxter's mind turned to the other great houses of the Reach, as well as the merchants and traders who relied on the Mander for their livelihood. If he could rally them to House Redwyne's cause, he could create a coalition strong enough to counterbalance the Tarlys and ensure that his family's influence continued to grow.

As he was contemplating his next steps, the door to the study opened again, and Lady Mina entered, her expression thoughtful.

"I've heard the news," she said quietly, taking a seat beside him. "The Tarlys are making their move."

Paxter nodded. "They are. And we need to be ready. But more than that, we need to start thinking about our own future. The Reach is changing, and we can't afford to be left behind."

Mina's eyes narrowed slightly as she considered his words. "You're thinking about alliances. Strengthening our ties with the other houses, perhaps even reaching out to those in the Free Cities?"

"Exactly," Paxter replied. "The Iron Bank has given us the resources we need to expand our trade and influence, but we can't rely on them alone. We need to build relationships with those who share our interests, those who understand that the Tarlys' ambitions could threaten us all."

Mina nodded, a determined look in her eyes. "Then we should begin immediately. I'll start reaching out to our contacts in the Reach, feel out where the other houses stand. We'll also need to strengthen our presence in Oldtown—if we can gain the support of the maesters and the merchants there, it will give us a significant advantage."

Paxter smiled, grateful for Mina's insight and resolve. "You've always had a way with people, Mina. I trust your judgment completely."

Mina returned his smile, but there was a seriousness in her gaze. "This won't be easy, Paxter. The Tarlys are a powerful house, and they won't hesitate to use force if they feel threatened. But if we're careful, if we move strategically, we can turn this to our advantage."

Paxter leaned forward, taking her hand in his. "We've faced challenges before, and we've always come out stronger. This will be no different. We'll protect our interests, secure our future, and ensure that House Redwyne remains a force to be reckoned with."

As they sat together in the study, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the room, Paxter felt a renewed sense of purpose. The Tarlys might be making their move, but so too would House Redwyne. The coming days would be critical, but Paxter was confident that they were prepared for whatever lay ahead.

The game of thrones was a treacherous one, filled with dangers at every turn. But Paxter Redwyne had learned to navigate those dangers, to see the opportunities hidden within the threats. And with Mina by his side, he knew that they would continue to rise, no matter the challenges that awaited them.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky and the first stars began to appear, Paxter made a silent vow to himself and to his family. The Reach was their home, and he would do whatever it took to protect it, to secure their legacy, and to ensure that the Redwyne name would be spoken with respect and fear throughout Westeros.

The game was far from over, but Paxter Redwyne was ready to play his part—under the vine, and with the strength of the Arbor behind him.
