Chapter 476 – Trust Is No Longer Earned, It’s Given
The hotel-like corridor extended almost infinitely. Max turned around when he felt like he was walking a considerable distance. The fork behind him already disappeared from his sight, and so was Flexy.
Now, there were only the three of them, moving alone in this empty corridor while glancing around with suspicious eyes. Even he didn't know whether the monsters had disguised themselves or not.
If they were, what kind of appearance would it be? And more importantly...
"Where should we go?" Princess Peach asked as they turned around the corner. "We should find the next exit, right? Just like what we did in the first two areas."
"Should be." Lily nodded as Max agreed with her words. "It's like a dungeon."
Indeed. This hotel corridor, along with many doors, looked like a dungeon path that he often saw in games, especially in the RPG series or other horror games that took place in a dungeon.
'We have to solve a puzzle, no? Or maybe we need to find the clue ourselves?'
Something that he really hated. A puzzle without any clue. The drawing on the crossroad also didn't help too much.
"There is a drawing of a skinwalker and three colorful keys. Maybe we should find the keys first?" Max suggested, thinking it would be better than looking around aimlessly in this corridor. Explore stories at My Virtual Library Empire
"Three of them? That's a perfect number for us." Lily spoke as she raised three fingers. "For a group of three people."
"But we shouldn't going separately." He reminded Lily, "Let's check the room one by one together, in case the monster appears. That way, we can pinpoint which one of us is real and which one is the monster."
"R-Right... Then, can we go in order?" Princess Peach suddenly asked, "Skipping one of them will definitely be bad. It's just common sense. Is your peasant brain unable to comprehend such simple stuff?"
She insulted them while smiling proudly at them. The way she looked at them mad Max wonder how she could be so arrogant when she was actually afraid of everything in this place.
Max sighed but didn't retort to her taunt and urged them to move forward. She was just roleplaying. Even Lily understood it. She nodded and moved forward as well while checking the surroundings carefully for anything weird.
He nodded inwardly. This was how they should be in this place. Checking the environment all the time, never lowering their guard.
"I will open the door." Max said as they stopped in front of the first room on the right side. The girls moved back slightly before nodding at him. He smiled and began to turn the knob around and pushed the door open.
Looking around, he noticed the room was pretty ordinary. A few white beds were lined up at the corner and there was a table with two chairs.
"Seems normal." Lily muttered as Princess Peach looked around nervously. Max nodded in agreement and closed the door before moving to the second one.
Just like the first one, there was nothing unusual. Following that, the third, the fourth... Nothing was out of place. Until...
"Why is the TV turned on?"
When they entered the 10th room, they found out the TV on the table was turned on, and a black screen was displayed on it. As if noticing someone's presence, the screen showed an image of a man dressed in white hazard suit, similar to them, running away in fear.
"A live stream? Or... A video?" He mumbled as the three of them approached the TV slowly.
It was like watching a movie that started playing by itself. Some men in the video morphed into skinwalkers, leaving only 3 survivors. They each held keys: black, white, and yellow.
These survivors entered rooms with numbers on them. Max immediately spoke when he saw this room.
"202, 108, and 381. Type them, chat!"
— Got it
— 202, 108, 381
— Remember them guys!
The viewers dutifully typed them down like what Max asked before the video continued showing them how they entered the room with the code. The survivors closed these doors and the video ended. The TV turned into static, loud noises resonated throughout the room before switching off.
Max saw these words:
Your journey is almost over
Thank you for playing our game
"This is the end?" Lily mumbled as Princess Peach sighed in relief.
While the girls were relieved, Max looked around the room warily. There was no way the game would end like this. The words on the screen were probably used to lower the players' guard.
At that moment, he heard footsteps coming from the end of the corridor, followed by something dragging across the floor and hitting the wall rhythmically. It sounded like chains and metal being dragged, making his spine tingling in fear.
'What is that?'
Anyway, that sounded like bad news. Screams could be heard outside. Based on the voice he heard, it sounded like Flexy's.
"Buddy! Save me! The monster is chasing after me!"
Flexy's scream appeared while he ran toward them. It was getting closer and closer. And Max had a bad feeling.
"Run now!" He immediately shouted as he grabbed Lily and Princess Peach's hands, dragging her out of the room.
He looked at the source of the scream and found Flexy getting chased after by 3 skinwalkers. Their huge red eyes were shining in the corridor that began to dim who knew when.
"Don't ever look back!" He warned them.
Max quickly led them away from those skinwalkers without wasting a second. Lily ran beside him while Princess Peach had a hard time following them.
"Buddy! Please stop. You can't leave me behind." Flexy's shout stopped them. "I am not a skinwalker, I swear! I know where to get the keys that we need to leave this place!"
"Huh? Really?" Princess Peach stopped immediately, but her hand was immediately pulled by Lily.
"He's lying." She said to the VTuber. "Flexy doesn't know we need keys to leave this place. Or rather, we don't know what the keys are used for yet."
"Meaning that one is a skinwalker." Max added. His lips curled up into a smile. "And that monster gave us free information. The keys are used to leave this place."
Lily nodded at his words and urged Princess Peach to run again. They eventually turned the corner and entered one of the rooms when the skinwalkers couldn't see them.
Max immediately closed the door and held it with his body. Footsteps rang outside the room, passing them a few seconds later, indicating that they hadn't found their hiding place yet.
'That was close.' He sighed in relief.
His legs gave out and he fell onto the floor.
"Man, that was scary."
— You're just saying that? Lmao, imagine getting chased by 3 skinwalkers
— Eh, it's not even that scary
— I agree, man. Did you see this person who screamed?
— Is that Flexy really a skinwalker, though? What if it's a real one? You left him getting chased by those monsters alone!
"Eh, he will manage." He shrugged off.
Everything was so chaotic that it didn't make sense at all.
Still...
"Max, look at this."
Lily called out to him from further into the room. He raised his head and saw her holding a white key while Princess Peach was holding an open box.
"Isn't this the key to exit? We found it under the bed."
Max blinked a few times. He looked at the door and noticed 202 was written on it. An idea came into his mind.
'There are three rooms, 202, 108, and 381.'
So this could be a white key. There must be another two keys somewhere in room 108 and 381.
'To think we stumbled upon it accidentally.'
If that wasn't luck, then he didn't know what to call it. With this key, they had something that could open the door to the next area.
He stood up with Lily and walked toward the two girls. Then, he noticed something else inside the box and picked it up. It was a map.
"I think we can get out of here safely now."
