Chapter 78: The folder
What the ffckk!?! What is this? Eiden's eyes widened as he stared at the screen. The folder was unmistakably labeled with his name Eiden Mores and it sat right there, in the middle of Miss Mika's personal PC directory. His heart skipped a beat, a chilling shiver climbing up his spine. Why is the project in her folder? Was she helping the professor check submissions? That might make some sense, but why would it be in her personal folder, not in any shared academic database? And more than that why were there documents with his school records, his academic performance, his club activities, even his middle school name ?
A creeping realization hit him like a brick.
Wait… if she has this much information on me, does that mean she knows my dad is Algir? Could it be that she's trying to take revenge on his son for whatever mess happened between them? They did break up. Maybe she still harbors resentment. Maybe she's plotting something subtle. Gulp.
Eiden's throat tightened as he remembered all the uncanny moments the odd glances, the perfectly timed conversations, her sudden mood swings whenever his name came up. And then it hit him again.
Wait a sec… isn't this exactly the kind of scene where I'm deep in thought, and then she suddenly appears behind me? He stiffened and glanced over his shoulder in panic.
Nothing. The room was empty. He exhaled sharply, heart thumping like a drumline in his ears. Wasting no time, he quickly shut the folder, deleted the recent file history, and made sure nothing else on the screen would hint at his intrusion. He left the PC as it was and bolted out of the office, careful not to leave any signs of his presence. The corridor outside felt unusually silent as he made his way down and disappeared into the crowd.
Roughly six minutes later, Miss Mika appeared outside her office. Her steps were calm, but there was an anxious sharpness in her eyes. She had originally planned to return a bit later, but it struck her just minutes ago she had never handed Sasha the key. With that realization, she hurried back, expecting to see Sasha waiting. But there was no sign of her.
Miss Mika furrowed her brows as she placed the key in the lock and turned it. Click. She paused. The door was already unlocked.
Her frown deepened. Pushing the door open, she stepped inside. Her sharp eyes scanned the room, landing on the stack of papers Sasha had left at the corner of the desk. Her mind started to piece things together. Did Sasha borrow a master key from another professor? Or had someone else been here?
Meanwhile, Eiden had already left campus and was walking aimlessly down the street, his mind spiraling in confusion. She's spying on me? Or more like… gathering information? But why?
His thoughts were racing. She probably knows about my parents. The documents had my family details school files, birth records, parental info. Everything. She's keeping tabs on her ex-lover's child. Okay, that doesn't sound too crazy. I mean, if I had a past like that, maybe I'd be curious too. But this… this was far beyond curiosity. She had information about my project.
Wait. The project. She had a copy of it. Eiden stopped walking as he frowned. His brain was going a hundred miles per hour. If she has a copy, then that means... someone must've picked up my USB. Could it be… she found it, finished the project, and submitted it for me?
He was still processing the thought when Vroom vroom !! A sharp throttle cut through his thoughts. He snapped out of it and instinctively jumped back to the side of the road. A scarlet Pagani F50 zoomed past, its sleek curves and smooth engine unmistakable. Behind the wheel was Eva. She gave him a quick glance through her sunglasses and gestured casually for him to stay off the road, but didn't stop.
Eiden blinked, dazed, as the car vanished down the street. Was I seriously standing in the middle of the road just now? Shaking his head, he trudged home, greeted as usual by his ever-cheerful mom. But his brain was still stuck back in that room, staring at the files on that PC.
Once back in his room, he didn't waste time.
"System-chan," he said aloud. Ding! "Do you remember the contents of the folder I saw?"
Affirmative. "Show it." Immediately, a translucent screen popped into the air in front of him. Eiden's eyes scanned through the files as System-chan reconstructed everything his academic history, his old essays, parental details, extracurricular activities. And finally, the project.
He opened his version from the USB and began comparing. After several minutes of scrutiny, he concluded they were the same. Byte for byte. No additions, no edits, just a direct copy. So it was her. She picked up my USB and submitted the project for me.
But… why? He rested his chin on his hand, staring at the screen. There were many possibilities. Maybe she felt guilty. Maybe she regretted cheating on my dad and thought this was her way of making amends to his son. Maybe she couldn't face me directly, so she helped from the shadows. That made some sense. But then again… what if it wasn't guilt? What if it was something else? What if this is just the beginning?
Back at the college, Miss Mika stood by her PC, intending to turn it off, when her hand froze mid-air. Her sharp gaze fell on the mouse. Something was wrong. She tilted her head slightly, eyes narrowing. The mouse had a fimger print . Normally, she always draped a clean handkerchief over it she couldn't stand sweaty palms touching electronics. It was a quirk of hers. She even used her fingernails to type, barely letting her fingers touch the keyboard surface.
But now… there were fingerprints. She leaned closer. They were not hers it couldn't be hers . Her brows furrowed. Someone had used her computer. Very recently. Her gaze drifted toward the screen, still dimly lit from standby mode. The memory of leaving it on returned to her, but something felt off.
