Chapter 447: Chapter 448: The Beginning of a New World
The gods all showed disdain for the newcomer.
Over a century ago, Odin, while trapped in battle against the mountain giant Thjazi of the Vanir gods, was on the verge of death. Unexpectedly, a deity from the Vanir turned traitor, killed Thjazi, and saved Odin's life. Consequently, this deity from the Vanir was welcomed into Asgard, becoming one of the Aesir and referred to as Odin's brother.
This god was none other than Loki, who now stood before them.
However, Loki's eccentric and arrogant actions had long been disliked by the gods. Adding to this disdain was his history of betrayal within his own kin, making him even more despised among the Aesir as a lowly scoundrel.
"Loki!" Thor looked at him incredulously. "You dare to return?!"
Previously, Loki had challenged Thor. During their duel, Loki cut off the golden hair of Thor's wife, Sif, the goddess of youth, nearly driving Thor to dismember him in rage. Loki, sensing the peril, hastily promised to commission craftsmen to create a head of hair for Sif made of gold that would grow like real hair, then quickly fled.
Seeing him return, Thor naturally had questions.
"Hold on, nephew Thor," Loki said. "This time I've brought back many fine things from the dwarves."
As he spoke, Loki suddenly hurled his spear, which flew towards Odin like a shooting star, startling all the gods. But Odin sat unmoved, and with a thud, the spear embedded itself in the cheek of Odin's indestructible throne, boring a hole through it.
"This spear, once thrown, must hit its mark, piercing everything. With it, even your enemies' dreams will be haunted. This is my gift to you, my brother."
Odin pulled the spear from his throne, weighing it in his hand, feeling the magic it contained. Pleased, he realized that any being weaker than him, even gods, could not evade his attack. With such a weapon, his chances of prevailing, whenever Ragnarok might come, were significantly better.
Next, Loki pulled a small golden boat from the sack, which could expand thousands of times its size to hold an entire army. He gifted this to Freyr, the god of sunlight.
Then, he presented a hammer to Thor, which could enlarge or shrink, return to the thrower's hand, and harness Thor's divine power to unleash mighty thunderbolts.
From the sack, he also produced a pure golden boar that gleamed brilliantly as it ran, its presence imposing.
Seeing Thor's impatience, Loki finally took out the golden hair for Sif, placing it upon her head. He then used magic to connect each strand of gold with Sif's severed hair, making it as soft and fitting as real hair, enhancing the goddess's radiance.
With gifts distributed and everyone in high spirits, Loki pulled another item from his pocket, raising it high.
"While each treasure I've brought today is extraordinary, they pale in comparison to what I hold in my hand, like fireflies to the sun and moon."
Seeing he had captured the gods' attention, Loki said, "You've all heard the legend, haven't you?"
"I was curious about the Rhine gold, so I traveled the river seeking it," Loki continued. "Before I found the gold, I encountered a dwarf wandering in a cave beneath the Rhine. I asked him about the gold, and he said it had been forged into a treasure."
"The dwarf was very nervous. I merely questioned him further, and he thought I was going to steal his treasure, so we fought. I killed him, and then I found his hidden item."
"Seeing its shape, I knew at once—it was the object from the legends."
Loki then opened his palm to reveal the ring to all the gods.
"The Ring of the Nibelungen," a deity exclaimed. "The power of the legend has become so strong, the ring has actually materialized!"
"Although I don't know the dwarf's name, the ring indeed contains immense power," Loki said. "I feel that wearing it, I could become the ruler of the world. But I know I cannot control such power, so I offer it to you, my brother."
Loki, holding the ring, approached Odin and handed it to him.
Odin hesitated, sensing the convenience of the situation was too coincidental and knowing if the legend was to be believed, the ring would bring ruin. He didn't want to accept it.
But the ring did possess a tremendous force, seemingly promising that all problems could be solved simply by wearing it.
Should he trust the legend and destroy the ring, or believe he could control its power to avert the coming of Ragnarok?
Odin hesitated for a moment.
Then he saw the expressions of the other gods.
Their eyes were riveted to the
ring, drawn to its power.
Realizing not just he, but all present gods could sense that power, Odin resolved that this power, if relinquished, could be seized by another god to use against him.
With that thought, he grasped the ring in his hand.
Instantly, he felt as though a great void had opened in his palm, a terrifying suction from the ring draining his divine power.
Odin was shocked and about to shout when the suction abruptly stopped.
Then, he felt his senses expand a thousandfold, as if all of Valhalla lay under his gaze, and with further power from the ring, his perception could extend over all of Asgard and even further, allowing him to see distances thousands of miles away or throw his spear to any location.
Though he could use the eyes of devout followers to achieve similar feats before, it had required immense divine power and never offered such freedom.
The ring seemed to amplify his divine power, giving him for the first time a true feeling of mastering the world.
"Odin, you should destroy the ring!" Frigg urged. "Bringing it into Valhalla will only strengthen the legend and make it real!"
"No, Frigg, this ring will be our weapon against Ragnarok."
"Odin, be sensible, it's making you greedy!" Frigg looked to the other gods. "It's making us all greedy; this will lead to disaster!"
Odin paused, recalling the prophecy.
But quickly, he dismissed the concern.
Even without the legend, Ragnarok was inevitable. If the ring could bring disaster, then any source of power could. Should he destroy his spear? Surrender his throne and power?
"You are wrong, Frigg."
"This is our opportunity, we can use this power to defeat our enemies. Perhaps we can even survive Ragnarok with its aid."
Frigg, knowing Odin's mind was made up and unshakeable, sighed deeply and suddenly turned to glare at Loki.
"You, the malevolent god, have brought the seeds of destruction!"
"Destroy?" Loki's sinister smile was visible beneath his facial markings. "Whose destruction?"
"The demise of others heralds our rebirth. What I have brought is the beginning of a new world."
