Chapter 318: Chapter 318: New Book List and the Firebolt
After breakfast, Harry took two envelopes from the cabinet, handed one to Wade, and then opened his own.
"Huh?" Harry exclaimed in surprise. "The Defense Against the Dark Arts book list is the same as last year?"
Wade also opened his envelope for a look.
Instead of a full list of Gilderoy Lockhart books, the required textbook was Charms of Defence and Deterrence, the same one Professor Abigail had assigned last year.
"Looks like Professor Abigail is teaching again this year," Wade said. "I wonder how long she'll stay."
"I hope she teaches this subject forever," Harry said hopefully. "Her lessons are actually useful."
Wade shook his head slightly.
Last semester, Abigail had only taught for two months before the holiday break, which allowed her to leave Hogwarts safely.
If she continues teaching this year… would she even last until Christmas?
A shadow of unease loomed over Wade's mind regarding this professor…
"Well, no surprises—of course The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 3 is on the list, along with Intermediate Transfiguration, The Monster Book of Monsters, The Home Life and Social Habits of British Muggles, and Unfogging the Future… And… huh? Wait a minute—The Monster Book of Monsters?"
Harry flipped through the list and muttered, "No wonder Hagrid gave me a copy for my birthday. That means I only need to buy five new books."
"I already have The Standard Book of Spells and Intermediate Transfiguration. You can just take mine," Wade said. "So you'll only need to buy the other three."
"Really? Thanks!" Harry said excitedly. "Then I'll cover the cost of your new books this time—no arguing!"
"Alright!" Wade chuckled and agreed.
He wasn't just giving away two old books; they came with his meticulously compiled top-student notes, which would be incredibly helpful for third-year coursework.
Harry's grades were already good, but who wouldn't want an easier time studying?
Feeling cheerful, Harry leaned over to check Wade's book list. "I remember you're taking all twelve subjects—how many books do you have to get?"
Wade spread out the list and replied, "I already have 'Ancient Runes Made Easy' and 'Rune Dictionary'. The only new one I need is 'Numerology and Grammatica'."
Harry glanced at the title and said, completely sincerely, "Honestly, just reading the name makes me not want to open it… I have no idea how you manage to read this stuff."
"Exploring the essence of magic at its core, interpreting spells through mathematics and runes—it's just as fascinating as the spells themselves."
Wade noticed Harry's eyes starting to glaze over and laughed. "I thought you weren't planning to take Muggle Studies?"
"I used to think Muggle Studies wasn't necessary, but after taking Professor Abigail's class, I realized… I actually don't understand Muggle society as well as I thought—"
Harry shuddered at the thought of those terrifying weapons and said, "I just know a little more common sense than most wizards, but beyond that, I don't know much either."
If it were possible, Harry would have loved to take all the elective courses like Hermione and Wade.
But he had already glanced at the Ancient Runes books and notes Wade had left on the table multiple times. Not only could he not understand a single thing, but he would start yawning before he even finished the first paragraph—worse than Professor Binns' hypnotic lectures.
As for Arithmancy… well, math had never been his strong suit.
The two subjects he really wanted to take were Muggle Studies and Care of Magical Creatures. The former was because of Professor Abigail's fascinating lessons, while the latter was due to the wonderful experience he had at Granian Farm.
For a while, Harry had even considered becoming a magical creature conservationist, just like Mr. Steven (Professor Murray's son). That seemed like it would be an amazing life.
But the moment he took to the sky on a broomstick, his dream of playing for the national Quidditch team overpowered everything else.
As for Divination—Harry had only chosen it because he heard it was an easy class to get good grades in.
That way, if he did poorly in his other subjects, at least Divination could help salvage some of his dignity.

Now that they had received their book lists, Wade and the group set off once again to Diagon Alley to buy their school supplies.
This time, they were surprised to find that most shops in Diagon Alley had installed streaming mirrors inside, encouraging passersby to stop and step into the stores.
After the initial marketing phase, Marchionne had started broadcasting Muggle television programs through Streaming Mirrors.
Today's broadcast was a famous silent comedy film. Although there was no sound coming from the mirrors, laughter echoed throughout all of Diagon Alley.
Even inside the Leaky Cauldron, Tom had set up a Streaming Mirror disguised as an ordinary television. But instead of using it to attract customers, the old bartender was too busy watching and laughing himself, completely forgetting to even pretend to wipe glasses.
After passing through the grimy Leaky Cauldron and stepping into the lively Diagon Alley, Wade occasionally heard children pleading:
"Please buy one, Mom! Even the cheapest one will do…"
"Wait a little longer. We'll get one after your father gets paid next month."
"Then I want to come to Diagon Alley again tomorrow!"
"Floo Powder costs two Sickles per scoop… If we come too many times, we'll burn through a Galleon in no time…"
Many children were gathered outside the stores, staring longingly at the programs being played inside.
The only thing more captivating than the Streaming Mirrors was the newest broomstick on display at Quality Quidditch Supplies—
The best flying broomstick: The Firebolt.
The Bugatti of the wizarding world, capable of accelerating to 150 miles per hour in just ten seconds.
Harry's attention was instantly snatched the moment he saw it—he simply couldn't look away.
Without hesitation, Sirius walked into the shop and bought the ridiculously expensive broomstick for Harry. He ruffled Harry's hair and said,
"Take it. Consider it an early Christmas present from me."
Harry clutched the broom and his eyes shined with excitement, he was so overwhelmed that he could hardly breathe.
"150 miles per hour in ten seconds… That's insanely fast. And without any protective enchantments—can the human body even handle that?"
Wade muttered to himself while placing an order for one as well.
He didn't actually need a broom this fast—his peregrine falcon form was even better for short sprints—but this was the Firebolt!
Even if he never rode it, just owning one as a collectible was worth it. And since money wasn't an issue for him, why not? As third-year students, they were allowed to bring brooms to school anyway.
Afterward, Lupin pulled out his own money and bought each of them a broomstick maintenance kit, which was also quite pricey.
Lupin was now earning a generous salary and had built up considerable savings, making him appear much more composed and at ease. The air of poverty that had once clung to him had almost entirely faded away.
This was why, across the street, someone stood and watched him for a long time, still unsure whether they had recognized the right person.
