Chapter 356: Wade: Mentally Healthy
Wade was silent for a moment before he finally spoke:
"When I was seven, he dragged me to skip school, insisting on taking me to a fun place—turns out, he led me to the top of a lighthouse and urged me to jump off."
Dumbledore frowned. His gaze, which initially held some pity for the child inside, was now filled only with coldness.
"You didn't tell your parents?" Dumbledore asked. "They seem to think you two have a good relationship."
"I didn't jump."
Wade explained, "Of course, I wouldn't do something that stupid. I turned around and left. But just as I was walking down the spiral staircase, I suddenly heard a loud crash—"
Wade paused and then said, "—he jumped off himself."
Dumbledore now didn't know what to say.
He had originally thought the boy was born bad, but now he realized he was just foolish.
Since there was still time, Wade simply finished the story.
"I thought he was dead. I ran out to check, only to find that he had landed in a haystack, luckily only breaking a leg."
"I carried him to a nearby clinic, but from then on, we were no longer friends."
To this day, Wade still couldn't understand Caryll's way of thinking. But because of that incident, he completely distanced himself from him.
Before the lighthouse jump, they could barely be considered friends. After that, Wade only saw him as an annoying kid from his father's friend's family whom he had to deal with.
However, Caryll seemed to think they had forged a "life-and-death bond" through the experience. Before moving away, he would often come looking for Wade to play, making Fred believe they had a great relationship.
Since it was Caryll who jumped off the lighthouse and broke his leg, the boy was at least honest enough to take full responsibility, not implicating Wade in the incident.
Besides, their fathers had always been close, both personally and in business. They trusted and supported each other.
So in the end, Wade also kept the truth from his parents, and never told them that Caryll had tried to push him into a deadly situation. Instead, he simply drew a boundary in his heart.
Two bats flew toward them in the darkness of the night, causing both Wade and Dumbledore to fall silent.
They watched as the bats entered the guest room. A short while later, the four of them left in a hurry.
Then, the peregrine falcon transformed back into human form, turned the golden hourglass, and instantly vanished from the spot.
Wade unconsciously felt a sense of relief.
His past self had already returned to an even earlier past. Now, at this moment in time, there was only one "Wade" left—he no longer needed to hide.
However, just as Wade was about to follow the group of vampires, Dumbledore suddenly pressed a hand on his shoulder and forcibly lifted Wade's Disillusionment Charm.
Wade, startled, said, "Professor?"
"You should go back and rest, Wade," Dumbledore said. "If I remember correctly, tomorrow… no, this morning at nine o'clock, you have two elective classes."
Wade was in utter disbelief. "You just taught me a spell!"
"Yes… but I taught you that spell so that next time, when you encounter enemies like these, you'll know how to protect yourself—not so you can go fight them right now."
Dumbledore, now visible, stood before Wade and looked down at him gently.
"Fighting vampires is not the same as participating in your school challenges, let alone the fact that you haven't fully mastered the Sunlight Charm yet."
"Wade, you're still young. You don't need to face the cruel side of this world too soon."
"Besides, these people are hiding a much bigger secret. I need time to investigate it, but you don't have the time to run around with me."
"—Go back."
Dumbledore's tone left no room for argument.
–That's not what you said when you were training Harry to fight Voldemort.
Wade thought bitterly, and stared at Dumbledore in frustration.
He didn't understand—he had already destroyed several of Voldemort's Horcruxes, so why was he being excluded from dealing with just a few vampires? Wade didn't believe Dumbledore was doing this out of concern for his safety…
And as for class—well, that was even more ridiculous. The headmaster knew perfectly well that most subjects weren't difficult for Wade.
Not to mention, he had a Time-Turner and could always catch up on sleep. Missing class was never an issue.
Then what is the real reason?
Suddenly, a thought flickered through Wade's mind, and his expression shifted slightly.
"I get it," he said sullenly. "I'll go back to school."
"Promise me you won't follow secretly," Dumbledore said.
"I'm not a Weasley twin…" Wade saw that the headmaster was serious, so he sighed and said, "I promise."
A promise made was not a promise he would break lightly.
Dumbledore finally believed him and strode off in the direction the vampires had gone. His body quickly changed color, blending into the surroundings until he completely vanished from Wade's sight.
Wade sighed. He truly didn't follow but instead transformed into a peregrine falcon and flew back to school.
He had figured it out—Dumbledore didn't keep him out of this because he thought Wade couldn't handle four mere vampires. It wasn't because he lacked ability or mental fortitude.
Dumbledore simply didn't want him to be part of a battle that might end in bloodshed.
Scenes of flesh and blood flying, humanoid creatures struggling in agony—this was what Dumbledore didn't want him to witness again.
This was different from Voldemort's fragmented soul or the Inferi. Vampires bled, they screamed, they begged for mercy or cursed in defiance. Some could go from lively and defiant to utterly silent in an instant.
Witnessing that process could be a massive psychological shock for an ordinary person. Some would even develop severe trauma because of it.
And Dumbledore believed that, at this moment, Wade shouldn't have to face that.
Who knew what that bearded man Donovan had told Dumbledore? The headmaster should have known about Wade's experience using spiders to take down criminals, yet he still treated him as a child.
Wade felt helpless. But it wasn't like he could just tell Dumbledore, "It's fine, I've been through it before. More than once. My mind is perfectly healthy, I won't be affected."
Back at school, Wade made sure to get a few hours of rest. His morning was packed with classes, and it wasn't until after his Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson in the afternoon that he finally had time to practice the new spell.
The Room of Requirement transformed into a gloomy stone chamber, resembling the Slytherin common room. Wade stood in front of a mirror and practiced several times until he finally mastered the correct casting technique.
He raised his wand—
"Solaris Arkaion!"
A blinding white light burst from the tip of his wand, instantly illuminating the entire room.
The beam was like a razor-sharp blade, like a scorching wave of heat, flooding every corner of the space. With countless refractions and reflections, it left almost no shadows untouched.
Even Wade's back was bathed in its brilliance.
Despite its intensity, the light carried no searing pain, no sensation of being burned. Instead, it felt overwhelmingly warm—radiating a powerful yet comforting force.
