Chapter 12: Interrogated
"Come on, how can this be?!" A very angry-looking middle-aged Auror slammed his hand on the table.
Nymphadora Tonks flinched before responding. "I told you already… I can't remember anything that happened. You have to believe me!"
"What I believe is that the other newbie is dead. And you are not being very helpful." The man clenched his fist. "As for what you remember… I have already requested the assistance of a mind healer. He should be here very s—"
He was interrupted by the door being opened.
Two people walked inside. One was a middle-aged woman with red hair.
Tonks recognized her as Amelia Bones, the Head of the Auror Department.
"Madam Bones." Tonks had interacted with her a few times, and the two of them got along quite well.
Amelia offered her a warm smile. "Greetings, Auror Tonks. It seems like you had a rough night."
The other one was a tall, bald man wearing a pristine white robe that contrasted heavily with the walls of Azkaban.
"I am Healer Monroe. I have been called for t—"
"Yes, yes. She is over here. Time is of the essence, Healer Monroe," the Prison Warden said. "If there is any information left in her head about the perpetrator, we must find out immediately."
The healer nodded. "Of course."
Madam Bones approached Tonks. "It's going to be okay. Just let the healer do his job."
"Y-yes, Ma'am…" Tonks looked down. She had just become an Auror a few months ago, something that she had been dreaming of since she was a child. And now this happened.
She was put under an Imperius Curse and used to do who knows what. Her friend Graham, who she had known from the academy, was now dead.
He had died from blood loss, caused by having been left lying on the ground in that prison cell. It took hours before he was found, and by then it was too late.
They also had no idea who had caused all of this, because Tonks had been obliviated and didn't remember anything that happened after being asked by her superior to patrol the upper levels of the prison.
"Let's see…" The healer took a seat next to her. "I am going to place my hands on the sides of your face. I need you to look into my eyes and relax. This may feel intrusive—you must not fight it, okay?"
"Yes, sir…" It's not like she had a choice. If she was not absolved of responsibility, she was likely to lose her job. Or even worse… she could end up in one of the many empty cells this place had.
While the healer was doing his thing, Madam Bones turned to address the other Auror in the room.
"Mister Rogers. I wanted to ask something… is this an attack from an outsider or did we lose some dangerous prisoner?"
"Making a recount of prisoners was the first thing I ordered…"
"And?"
"We have not lost any prisoners," the Auror said.
"So are you telling me that someone crept in from the outside, killed one of our newest recruits, and took control of another one? For what purpose?... and who?..." Amelia Bones had no idea why someone would want to sneak into Azkaban, other than to free a prisoner. But that was not the case.
"That… we are still trying to figure out. All I know is that I saw Auror Tonks coming from the upper levels by herself. And she was acting strange… barely talking and refusing to stop when I asked her. It was very out of character for her."
"Did you not realize she was under the Imperius Curse?" Bones asked.
"Not immediately. The lighting in the dining area is very dim… I could not see her eyes clearly."
"Are you sure she was alone? Someone could have been concealing themselves with magic while taking her somewhere else," Amelia suggested.
The Warden shrugged. "Mayhaps… I suppose it is a possibility. If that is the case, whatever the intruder wanted must have been on the lower floors."
"The lower floors…" Amelia considered it for a moment. The first floor was the entrance of the prison and didn't have much...just some resting areas for visitors. The second floor had most of the bedrooms for the Aurors who were staying here, but there was nothing valuable or of interest in there.
This only left the basement. They used that place as storage, but as far as she knew, the only things being stored there were food, clothes, and some potions. Nothing that was too valuable or rare. Definitely not something worth the risk of entering Azkaban for.
"Have you checked the basement? Is there something that could have been taken from there?" Just in case, she asked.
"The basement?" The Auror raised an eyebrow. "What could have been taken from there? Prisoner garbs? Sausages? Perhaps a Calming Draught? There's nothing of importance in there."
"Still… I want you to send a few men to check the basement. I need to be sure. Check the other floors too," Amelia said.
"As you wish, Madam Bones."
They saw the healer release his hold on Tonks's face and let out a loud sigh.
"Anything good?" Bones asked, although she already could guess the answer by the healer's expression.
The man shook his head. "I'm afraid not… whoever performed the Obliviation on Miss Tonks did a very thorough job. I cannot find a single trace or fragment of memory between the point where she began her routine inspection and when she regained her senses, right outside the entrance door of the prison."
"Well, that's just great." Miss Bones looked visibly disturbed. "Whoever did this took a huge risk. They definitely took something that they at least considered valuable, and it was not one of the prisoners… so what was it?"
"Ehm… Madam Bones?" Tonks called with hesitation.
"Yes?"
"Am I fired?..." Tonks asked.
Madam Bones shook her head. "No, dear. But I do want you to go to the hospital and get yourself a full evaluation. Once you get the green light, come see me at the Ministry, and I will get you reassigned."
Tonks breathed in relief. She was able to keep her job at least. But still… an unpleasant sensation remained in her. She had never felt so… used.
'I'm going to find whoever did this to me… and I will make them pay,' she promised to herself.
