Chapter 430: Chapter 430: Bottom Floor
After easily defeating the demon army, the five of them continued to spiral down the staircase, passing through layer after layer of mirror-like floors, until they finally reached the tower's top—or rather, the very bottom.
Karazhan's top was Medivh's observatory and his most important lair.
From this, Aegwynn roughly deduced that Sargeras would also place his lair in the mirror layers at the tower's peak.
Not only for reasons of secrecy and safety but also as a cruel irony directed at Medivh and Aegwynn from the prideful Sargeras.
A great mage, who killed the Demon King to protect the world, yet the cunning Demon King took this opportunity to hide within her child's body, like a shadow of her own offspring, and seized the mage's power.
Just as it was laughably ironic, just as Karazhan above and the demonic lair below were.
How absurd, how fitting, wasn't it?
Here, the hallway no longer stretched downward but instead spread horizontally into a faintly reddish floor, covered with cooled obsidian tiles.
Darkness reflected the mysterious flames floating beneath the floor, which, though warm, did not feel stifling due to their magical origin.
In the center of this massive cavern stood some simple iron furniture: a workbench with chairs, a row of cabinets.
It gave an oddly familiar feeling, and they immediately realized that this was a perfect replica of Medivh's workspace.
Among the iron furniture, stood a towering figure of a Nethermancer—none other than Medivh himself.
The Nethermancer smiled at them, as if he had been waiting for a long time.
"Hello, my old friend, my young apprentice, the strange mage, the lady from the orcs... oh, and my dear mother. I've been waiting for all of you for quite a while."
Although the person before them looked no different from the past, still wearing a smile, it was easy to discern from the cold, evil, and tyrannical aura surrounding him that he was no longer the Medivh who once wholeheartedly protected Azeroth.
"What an interesting little bug to have made it this far," Medivh said with ill intent, looking at Khadgar.
"I must admit, it was an accident that you discovered me. Letting you escape was an even greater accident—perhaps because I was too kind?
In any case, the reinforcements you brought are certainly a small inconvenience for me, but that's all they are. They cannot stop me."
"I defeated you once, I can defeat you again!" Aegwynn immediately retorted.
"Is that so? Such a touching boast, yet the power you once used to defeat me is now mine, hahaha!" Medivh let out a proud laugh, then his tone shifted.
"But how to deal with you, we will talk about later. For now, let me punish this disobedient little apprentice of mine."
The moment Medivh finished speaking, they sensed something was wrong, and Khadgar even attempted to flee immediately.
However, Medivh was much faster.
He casually waved his hand, and a sickly green beam shot out, striking Khadgar. But this beam didn't inject energy—it absorbed it.
In that instant, it felt as though something had clogged Khadgar's throat. Then, he felt his strength, heat, vitality... even his magical energy being drained away. His body grew weak, cold, and feeble...
Until Alaric and Aegwynn acted together to interrupt Medivh.
Khadgar could breathe again, but his breath was ragged and labored. His joints burned, his muscles ached.
Looking at himself in the reflection on the obsidian floor, he saw his own face...
It was the face of that old man he had seen in the illusion. Dark, tired eyes surrounded by countless wrinkles and gray hair. Even his beard had turned completely white.
Khadgar's heart sank. His youth and magic had been drained, and he no longer had the confidence to leave this place alive.
"Truly dramatic," Medivh observed, looking at Khadgar. "One negative effect of being inside a human body is that parts of my humanity occasionally surface.
Go make friends, go save the people. This caused me no small trouble when I later had to kill them. Do you know?
When I killed Moroes and Cook, I nearly cried. That's why I needed to retreat here to recover. But, like anything, you get used to it.
Once you're used to it, you can kill your friends like strangers."
"Stop it, Medivh," Lothar said, pain mingling in his voice. "Stop before it's too late. I don't want to be your enemy."
"I don't want that either, old friend," Medivh pointed his hand at him. "You have no idea what I've done.
They were cruel things, but I had to do them. I don't want to be your enemy. Put down your weapons, friend. Don't interfere with this any longer."
The energy in Medivh's hand shot toward the warrior, bathing him in starlight.
"You want to help me, don't you, old friend?" Medivh's face twisted into a cruel smile again.
"You want to be my slave. Come on, help me deal with this child. Then we can be friends again like before."
"Controlling humans..." Aegwynn gritted her teeth. "How dare you use such magic on your own friends!"
As she spoke, magic light flared in Aegwynn's hands, seemingly trying to dispel the spell on Lothar.
But Alaric stopped her hand.
"Wait," he said. "Trust Lothar. Trust him. His will is strong enough to resist this magic, and his sword..."
"Alright, I'll listen to you." Aegwynn repressed her urge to solve everything herself and began preparing a counterspell.
Starlight faded from around Lothar, and with slow but determined steps, he moved forward. One step, two steps, three steps, until he raised his rune sword and charged.
To their surprise, he cursed as he charged at Medivh, not Khadgar. His voice was filled with grief and tears.
Medivh was startled but quickly recovered. He stepped back and dodged Lothar's first strike.
The warrior stopped his momentum, pulled the blade back for a parry, and forced Medivh to retreat a step. Then, with a heavy overhead strike, Medivh was forced back another step.
At that moment, lightning suddenly gathered above his head, ready to strike Medivh at any moment.
On the ground, large obsidian hands suddenly erupted from the tiles, grabbing tightly onto Medivh's legs. With the hardness of obsidian, even a ogre wouldn't be able to break free.
It was Aegwynn and Alaric who had struck, and their move was a fatal blow.
