Chapter 469: Chapter 469: Death Knights
In truth, the orc invasion of Khaz Modan had already begun long ago.
After conquering Stormwind City, the new Warchief of the Horde, Orgrim Doomhammer, was disappointed to discover that humanity's retreat was not due to a complete collapse but rather a strategic withdrawal.
The humans had recognized that they lacked the strength to contend with the Horde in its current form and had chosen to fall back on their own terms.
Before their departure, the humans made a ruthless decision—they gathered all supplies and provisions they couldn't carry and set them ablaze.
As a result, despite the heavy casualties suffered during the siege of Stormwind, the Horde gained little in terms of resources.
Unlike ordinary orcs, Orgrim was a leader of great strategy and vision.
He dreamed of guiding the orcs back to their ancient traditions, freeing them from the corruption of fel magic, and severing the influence of Gul'dan and Blackhand once and for all.
However, such a grand ambition was not something that could be achieved overnight. First, Orgrim had to secure the Horde's foothold in Azeroth.
He understood that simply taking Stormwind was far from enough. After such a brutal war, the other human kingdoms would never coexist peacefully with the Horde.
Reports from scouts confirmed that human leaders were now gathering in the northern lands of Lordaeron to discuss their next move.
Orgrim knew that the Horde could not afford to sit idly by.
If they remained content with defending their current holdings while humanity gathered its strength, a counteroffensive would soon follow.
The combined military power of the human nations far exceeded that of the orcs.
If left unchecked, the humans would eventually wear the Horde down and drive them to defeat.
The only path to victory was to strike first, before the enemy could fully prepare.
But this presented a new problem: the Horde's supplies barely sufficed for daily survival, let alone a full-scale campaign.
The war against Stormwind had depleted their stockpiles of weapons and armor, and reinforcements from Draenor were scarce. Orgrim needed another way to strengthen the Horde.
Since the scorched ruins of Stormwind offered no resources, he had to look elsewhere—and the Bronzebeard dwarves of Khaz Modan became his target.
According to Horde scouts, Khaz Modan held everything the orcs needed.
Loch Modan provided abundant water and was a key agricultural hub for the dwarves, while the mountains of Khaz Modan were filled with rich mineral deposits and endless forges.
Thus, before launching an assault on Lordaeron, Orgrim decided to seize the dwarven lands to replenish the Horde's war supplies.
During a violent blizzard, the Horde struck Khaz Modan.
But the dwarves were prepared. They collapsed tunnels within the mountains to obstruct the orcs' advance.
At the same time, they called upon their ancient allies—the gnomes—to assist them.
The two races worked together, establishing defensive strongholds throughout Khaz Modan.
Yet even with these efforts, the dwarves and gnomes were no match for the Horde's overwhelming force.
Using the winter storms to their advantage, the orcs swept across Khaz Modan in a bloody rampage.
Countless dwarves and gnomes perished under the orcs' savage blades. One by one, the scattered settlements, outposts, and armories of Khaz Modan fell into Horde hands.
The remaining defenders were forced into retreat. The gnomes withdrew to their capital, Gnomeregan, while the dwarves fell back to their stronghold—Ironforge.
Orgrim's vision for the Horde required severing its ties to Gul'dan and fel magic.
To achieve this, he needed to dismantle the Shadow Council, which had long controlled the Horde from behind the scenes.
Upon becoming Warchief, he seized the opportunity while Gul'dan was in a coma and purged the Council's influence.
However, he soon discovered that without the Shadow Council, the Horde was lacking in magic users.
Having lost their shamanistic roots, the orcs could not easily regain their connection to the spirits.
This left them vulnerable to human mages, who could dominate the battlefield with their arcane power.
When Gul'dan finally awakened, Orgrim was forced into a reluctant compromise. They struck a deal.
Orgrim would not pursue further action against the Shadow Council, and in return, the Council would refrain from interfering in the Horde's leadership.
Instead, they would focus on countering enemy spellcasters and supernatural threats—without using fel magic.
This posed a challenge for Gul'dan. But soon, he found another source of dark power.
He began collecting the corpses of fallen human knights—avoiding orc bodies, as defiling them would enrage the Horde.
Through a series of gruesome rituals, he transformed these corpses into powerful necromantic warriors.
They became known as Death Knights.
These unholy warriors were the warlocks' greatest creation.
They required neither food nor rest. They could channel necrotic energy to drain the life force of their enemies and even reanimate the dead to fight alongside them.
Their leader was Teron'khan, also known as Teron'Khan Bloodseer.
With each refinement of his methods, Gul'dan created more and more Death Knights. When Orgrim first witnessed their power, he was filled with both awe and dread.
Though he found their existence unsettling, he could not deny their potential.
They did not wield fel magic but instead used another branch of sorcery—one that could devastate enemies without corrupting the land beneath them.
The Death Knights played a crucial role in the Horde's conquest of Khaz Modan. They did not fear the cold. They were impervious to bullets and blades.
They ignored treacherous terrain. Their ability to raise fallen warriors into undeath left a lasting impression on the dwarves.
Word of this terrifying force soon reached Anduin Lothar.
When Alaric learned of these developments, he quickly grasped the truth.
"You're telling me… they used necromantic magic to create undead warriors?" After hearing Alaric's explanation, Lothar frowned deeply. "This will be a serious problem for our soldiers."
Until now, undead had only existed within the experimental magic of necromancers. Ordinary human soldiers had never faced such a foe.
If they realized they were fighting against reanimated corpses—perhaps even their former comrades—the psychological impact could be devastating.
"If they have Death Knights, then the rise of the Paladins will be even more crucial for us," Alaric remarked casually with a confident smile.
"That's why we need to trust Archbishop Faol… Some matters are best left to the experts, don't you think?"
"You make a good point." Lothar felt somewhat reassured by Alaric's words.
"Still, we need to act fast. I believe we should gather an army immediately and move to relieve Khaz Modan before the orcs fully secure it.
If they gain complete control over the dwarven mines and forges, we'll be in serious trouble."
