Chapter 585: Chapter 585: Allegiance
Seeing Alaric hesitate, Jaina immediately sweetened the deal.
"Little one, if you're willing to help the Barov family, we'll definitely repay you.
Though Barov is just a family, we've held territory equivalent to a small kingdom for thousands of years and accumulated immense wealth.
If you can preserve that for us, I swear, the entire Barov legacy will be at your disposal."
"No, no, that's not necessary. Of course I'm willing to help sister Jaina, but there's no need for repayment. With our relationship, we don't need that kind of thing."
Alaric's heart was indeed tempted, but to maintain a good impression, he naturally pretended to decline.
After all, from what Alaric understood, Jaina's personality wasn't like her husband and son's, who were purely political animals.
Given the bond between them, the more he refused, the more she'd feel indebted.
As expected, Jaina cut off his refusal.
"You're a good boy," she said with a soft smile, looking at Alaric gently. "But please, don't refuse me, okay?
Actually, the Barov family pledging itself to you isn't just for gratitude. You've seen it, my husband and son are both… gone."
At that point, her voice choked up, as if she had once again recalled the child who betrayed and murdered his own kin.
"Now, the Barov family is just me and poor Illucia. To the nobles, a widow and orphan like us are nothing but meat on the chopping board.
My status as a mage only keeps them from acting rashly.
But even if you can ensure our land isn't seized, it's just a slow death for us... We need your long-term protection."
"…I understand."
Alaric thought for a moment and finally said, "Don't worry, sister Jaina. With me here, I'll make sure the Barov family never falls into that kind of desperate state."
"Then, little one, our future, mine and Illucia's, is in your hands." Jaina sighed and suddenly leaned in, planting a kiss on Alaric.
The sudden softness and warmth caught Alaric off guard.
But before he could react, the sensation vanished like a dragonfly skimming the surface of water, as if it had never happened.
Seeing Alaric's surprised expression, Jaina smirked playfully.
"Don't overthink it, little one. That was just an early payment for your reward."
To such a teasing gesture, Alaric could only return a helpless smile.
In truth, his current body did possess extraordinary charm and presence, especially lethal to older women.
And when it came to flirtation, it wasn't just Jaina Barov, Alleria and Sylvanas, even the three dragon queens who saw him as a father figure, would occasionally pull similar stunts when alone with him.
In the past, when he was with young witches like Hermione in the Harry Potter world, or princesses and noble girls like Daenerys in the Game of Thrones world, Alaric might have looked youthful, but those girls had often grown up under his watch.
As a result, Alaric had always taken the role of a mature guardian.
But upon arriving in Azeroth, the tables had turned completely.
Though Alaric still attracted the opposite sex, with his charm in full force, Azeroth's higher magic level had produced many long-lived races.
His youthful appearance now often put him on the receiving end of care, and even flirtation.
At first, Alaric had found it hard to adjust. But now…
He seemed to be enjoying it.
So now, faced with Jaina's jokes and teasing, Alaric gladly accepted it all. At the very least, it lightened her mood amid the crushing weight of internal and external crises.
Having settled the future relationship with the Barov family, Alaric offered a gesture to reassure Jaina.
"Sister Jaina, actually, the intel about orcs infiltrating Alterac and King Aiden's surrender, I haven't reported it to the Alliance yet," he said with a sly raise of his brow.
"So, as my first step in helping the Barov family, I'll let you deliver this information yourselves.
With such a contribution, I doubt the other kingdoms will find any excuse to carve up Barov."
"Indeed, that's a brilliant idea," Jaina's eyes lit up.
But then, she looked at Alaric with concern.
"But that should be your credit. Is it really okay to give it to us?"
"Of course." Alaric shrugged. "You know me, I don't care much about accolades like that."
"That's true," Jaina laughed bitterly. "With your record, this kind of merit is just another tiny jewel in your crown.
It's only people like us, those who never answered the Alliance's call, with no achievements to speak of, who would cherish it so."
"How can you say you've made no contribution?" Alaric said comfortingly. "At the very least, the Barov family provided the Alliance with a great deal of supplies and food."
"Little one, no need to comfort me." Jaina shook her head. "I know full well, when the Alliance was first formed, both Barov and the Alterac Kingdom acted disgracefully.
We relied on our borderless position with the Horde to dodge calls for troops, only willing to spend money… If only I had had the resolve back then to stop Alex."
"Well, it's not too late to send troops now." Alaric gently patted her hand and suggested,
"As long as the Barov family responds to the Alliance's battles against the Horde forces occupying Alterac, I don't think anyone will hold past grudges."
"If only it were that simple."
Despite some lingering sorrow and worry, Jaina's expression had lightened considerably.
After some further discussion of details, Jaina stood up and warmly extended an invitation.
"Little one, you and your maid came from far away to scout. You must be tired.
The Barov family may be trapped in this castle, but our food reserves are decent, though mostly preserved rations and a few types of garden-grown produce.
If you don't mind, please stay for a meal and rest for the night?"
"Sister Jaina's hospitality, I'll accept it gratefully, no matter the fare."
The two left the study together.
As the door opened, they saw Onyxia still standing guard outside. Jaina seemed to recall the earlier scene and leaned in to whisper in Alaric's ear.
"Who exactly is your little maid? When she saw me earlier, she instantly conjured such a huge fireball, unless she's a master of evocation magic, even most archmages couldn't do that… But I've never heard of someone like her in Dalaran."
Seeing her astonishment, Alaric chuckled.
After a moment of thought, he decided to reveal a bit, since Jaina was now on his side.
"Actually, with her identity, it'd be strange if she couldn't do that."
"Why?" Jaina's curiosity grew.
"I found her in Grim Batol," Alaric said mysteriously. "Back then, we rescued many dragons from the orcs there and crippled the Horde's aerial forces."
"So… she's a dragon?" Jaina's eyes widened with both fear and wonder.
"That's right. Oni is a black dragon princess," Alaric said with a grin and refused to elaborate further.
Leaving Jaina walking beside him, stealing the occasional glance back at Onyxia with a strange look in her eyes.
Even during the evening banquet, Jaina continued to sneak curious looks at Onyxia, much to the black dragon princess's annoyance, prompting her to keep rolling her eyes at Alaric in protest.
