Chapter 54: Study of Ancient Runes
While, Harry had departed towards the Gryffindor tower, another figure had entered in Dumbledore's office.
And who could it be? Other than Severus Snape?
Entering the room, he showed no patience.
"What did you find?" He questioned.
Dumbledore squinted his eyes, "Why so impatient, Severus?"
Snape retorted, "You may find these things assuming and of no importance but I feel it… that brat is hiding something."
"He would have never dared to break the head of another person," Snape said. "And that too by physical violence and not by magic."
"What explanation he gave?" Snape asked.
"The scar… is making him loose control of his emotions," Dumbledore replied with a contemplative gaze.
Snape also squinted his eyes hearing the word scar.
"Was he telling the truth?" Snape asked.
"Did you check for how he summoned the Potter family magic?" Snape almost whispered.
Dumbledore shook his head, "Using legilimency and reading his mind when there is something happening in his scar is not good idea."
"Disturbing his mindscape in a critical situation is not something I would do," Dumbledore said. "I am not willing to stir the hornet's nest. It may have caused unforeseen situations."
Snape snorted but did not say anything.
"Mind you Snape," Dumbledore added in a firm voice. "I also do not want you to use any mind spells on him."
"I do not want any of it," the headmaster declared with a finality in a tone.
A trace of irritation flashed at Snape's face but seeing Dumbledore's firm expression, he could only nod his head in acknowledgement.
"Should I declare his punishment tomorrow?" Snape questioned after few moments of silence.
"I believe it would be wise to wait for a day or two," said Dumbledore. "I want to observe him for a little time."
Snape nodded and he walked away from the office while Dumbledore found himself lost in thoughts.

Early next morning, Harry Potter got freshened and dressed and arrived in the great hall for the breakfast along with Hermione. Ron was following them.
Despite Harry's thoughts about keeping things 'normal', he knew that he was going to stir up another drama today.
He had indulged himself in the breakfast. Hermione was sitting next to him while Ron was sitting across on the other side of the table.
Harry could only wonder, how had he tolerated this idiot for such a long time. The way Ron had been stuffing the food in his mouth, it was slowly killing Harry's appetite.
At this moment, Minerva came in stepping down the raised platform of the teachers' table. In her hands, she was holding a stack of parchments- the timetables as she distributed them to the students.
She arrived near the trio and handed them the timetable. Hermione and Ron took their timetables but Harry shook his head in denial.
Minerva gave him a questioning look to which Harry smiled puled another parchment from his robes and gave it to Minerva.
"What is it, Mr. Potter?" She questioned as she took the parchment. It was a letter.
As Minerva read through the letter, a frown appeared on her face.
"Professor McGonagall," said Harry while Minerva completed reading the letter. "I believe that you would need to change my timetable."
"I am dropping Divination from this year and in its place, I would be taking 'Study of Ancient Runes'," Harry declared in a loud voice.
"You cannot do this, Mr. Potter," she said. "Headmaster won't allow it."
"Harry," the idiot Ron also chimed in. "Why would you drop divination? It is so easy to get an O in it."
Hermione meanwhile had a happy expression but hearing Minerva's declaration, it instantly fell. For her, teacher's words were laws in themselves.
Harry's grin only spread wider, "I was afraid you would say something like this."
With this Harry put his hand inside the inner pocket of his robes and pulled out something. It was an old booklet, almost in tattered condition.
'Hogwarts: Rules, Regulation & Governance' was printed on the front cover.
"Where was it?" Harry said as he started to turn the page. "Yes, found it."
He stretched his hand and held the booklet as for everyone to see it. He then began reading it loud.
"Students are free to change their elective subjects in any year including the O.W.L year; the only condition is that they need to pass an exam to prove that they are well versed with the portion of the subject which had already been taught in the preceding years."
"Professor McGonagall," said Harry. "And it does not matter to be honest. I can choose to study one subject at Hogwarts but while appearing for O.W.L, I can choose an entirely different subject."
"Why would it matter if I wish to change the subject?" Harry asked. "I do not think, the headmaster has any role to play in it."
"I believe that professor Babbling would have not any problem in arranging a test for me so that I can satisfy the condition," Harry concluded.
"Yes, Mr. Potter," came a voice following which Bathsheda Babbling came into the view. "I do not see a problem in arranging a test for you."
"Harry," it was again Ron trying to butt in his views.
"Professor Babbling," Harry said. "Please arrange a test for my friend Ron Weasley too. He also seems impatient to join me."
Babbling who had an excited expression on her face gave a simple nod but Ron panicked.
"Harry… No," he shouted. "I do not want ancient runes."
He added further, "Where did you even get that book from? Is it even an authentic book?"
"It is authentic rulebook, Ron," Harry said with irritation in his voice. "And if it is not, I believe that headmaster or the professors can give us the authentic one."
Meanwhile, Minerva's face was filled with hesitation as she struggled to form a reply.
