Harry Potter: The Legend of Nero Ravenclaw

Chapter 26: Chapter 26: The Heirloom

The sharp pop of Apparition echoed through the air as Dumbledore and Nero reappeared on the seventh floor of Hogwarts. The stars above the castle twinkled faintly, the silhouette of the school standing like a protective guardian in the night.

Dumbledore turned to Nero, his expression warm yet contemplative. "Would you like to do the honor?"

Nero hesitated for a moment, then nodded. He led the way through the familiar hallways until they reached the tapestry depicting Barnabas the Barmy's ill-fated attempt to teach trolls ballet.

He began pacing before the wall opposite the tapestry, his mind focused. I need a place to hide something... The thought repeated itself like a mantra with each step.

On the third pass, the wall shifted, stone melting away to reveal an ornately carved wooden door. Nero pushed it open, revealing the fabled Room of Requirement.

His breath caught. "It's even bigger than I imagined," he said, his voice filled with awe. Towers of discarded items stretched as far as the eye could see, casting long shadows under the flickering light of enchanted torches.

Dumbledore chuckled softly. "The room has a knack for fulfilling the needs of those who seek it, often in ways more grandiose than anticipated."

As they stepped inside, Nero's gaze flitted over the oddities scattered throughout the room: a collection of mismatched cauldrons, a dusty harp missing several strings, and a weathered suit of armor perched atop a pile of books.

"I'll try using my Raven Sense," Nero said, his eyes flashing as he activated his ability. His vision sharpened, a faint overlay of magical energy highlighting various objects in the room. He turned slowly, scanning every corner, but nothing seemed to stand out.

"No luck," he admitted, frustrated.

Dumbledore stepped forward, his wand rising gracefully into the air. The elder wizard murmured a few words under his breath, and the wand began to hover, its tip glowing faintly as it moved in gentle arcs.

"This," Dumbledore explained, "is a small trick I've picked up over the years. It detects the most hidden traces of dark magic, subtle but effective."

The wand guided them deeper into the room, weaving through towering heaps of forgotten treasures. After several minutes, it stopped, pointing toward an old, dusty cupboard. Atop it sat a crumbling bust adorned with a tarnished diadem.

Nero's breath hitched as he took in the sight. The diadem was exquisite despite its age, the words Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure faintly etched along its surface.

Activating his Raven Eyes again, Nero studied the diadem. His heart sank as he spotted faint black tendrils of magic writhing from the object, dissipating like smoke into the air. A dreadful sensation washed over him, a cacophony of cries and screams seemed to echo faintly in his mind.

"Merlin…" Nero muttered, clutching his head.

Dumbledore stepped closer, his wand tracing intricate patterns in the air as he examined the diadem. His expression grew heavy, his shoulders slumping slightly as he let out a weary sigh.

"What have you done, Tom?" he murmured, his voice tinged with sorrow. His eyes glistened as if holding back tears.

Nero glanced at the headmaster, surprised to see such vulnerability.

Dumbledore finally turned to Nero, his voice steady but somber. "This is undoubtedly a Horcrux. However, there is a significant difference from what you've shown me in your memories, Nero." He paused, his gaze fixed on the diadem. "Tom once split his soul by committing murder, each Horcrux contained a single fragment of his soul. But this... this is different. I can feel the presence of at least a hundred souls trapped within."

Nero's stomach churned at the thought, his mind racing considering the implication of this statement. "A hundred souls? That's... unimaginable. Do you think he did this all at once, or over time?"

Dumbledore's expression darkened. "I cannot say for certain. Perhaps the answer to this question lies in the first horcruxes that Tom created. What I do know is that this is an abomination far beyond what even I had suspected. To harvest so many lives for the sake of creating a more 'perfect' Horcrux..."

He shook his head, his voice trembling slightly. "This speaks to a level of cruelty and calculation that even I had not fully grasped. Tom's arrogance knows no bounds."

Nero frowned, the cries he had sensed from the diadem still echoing faintly in his mind. "But why trap so many souls? What could he gain from this?"

Dumbledore sighed, his shoulders sagging under the weight of his thoughts. "It may have been an experiment, a misguided attempt to perfect the art of soul-splitting. Or perhaps he believed that the greater the number of sacrifices, the more potent the magic binding the Horcrux. Either way, it is a horror beyond comprehension."

The room was heavy with silence for a moment, the enormity of the revelation pressing down on them.

Nero broke the stillness, his voice low. "And those souls... Do you know a way of releasing them?"

Dumbledore's eyes softened with sadness. "Not without destroying the Horcrux itself. And even then, the fate of those souls remains uncertain. Such magic twists the very fabric of life and death, undoing it is no simple feat."

He hesitated, a hint of regret shadowing his features. "I must admit, my studies of such dark and ritualistic magic were never as thorough as they perhaps should have been. This is a gap I may need to address in the days ahead."

Nero clenched his fists, his nails digging into his palms. "He didn't just destroy his own soul. He destroyed so many others. For what? Power? Fear of death? Pathetic. A true wizard should conquer death through wits, not resorting to such magic."

Dumbledore placed a hand on Nero's shoulder, his touch light but grounding. "It is the way of those who seek power for its own sake. They fail to see the humanity they trample upon. They see only what they desire, and they justify the means to achieve it."

The weight of Dumbledore's words lingered between them. Finally, the elder wizard straightened, his voice regaining some of its firmness.

Dumbledore continued, "Thank you, Nero. Your trust tonight has allowed me to confirm my suspicions. Tom has indeed created Horcruxes, though the nature of their creation may have evolved over the years. Now, I must determine whether the number aligns with your memories or if we must prepare for something more."

Nero nodded solemnly. "I understand, Grandpa. But regarding the Horcruxes, I have two requests."

Dumbledore tilted his head curiously. "Go ahead, my boy."

"First," Nero began, "I want to restore the diadem. It's part of my family's legacy, something worth saving. Please, don't attempt to destroy it yet. Study it as much as you need to, and let me join you whenever possible. But give me the chance to try and purify it first. This may take years, but I want to try it. If I fail... then we can destroy it."

Dumbledore regarded Nero thoughtfully, then nodded. "A noble request. Very well, Nero. We will not destroy it without exploring all options."

Nero's expression softened in gratitude. "Thank you."

"And your second request?"

"Please do not go after the Gaunt ring," Nero said gently, his voice laced with quiet determination. "At least not yet. Give me a few years, time to grow, to become more capable. When the moment comes, we will face it together."

Dumbledore's expression softened, a tender smile gracing his lips. His eyes, usually full of wisdom and mystery, shimmered with a rare warmth. "Very well," he said, his voice gentle yet resolute. "I will wait. And when the time comes, we shall face it side by side."

The two stood in silence for a moment, the weight of their discoveries settling over them.

"Shall we return?" Dumbledore asked gently.

Nero nodded, casting one last glance at the diadem before they stepped out of the room.
