Chapter 28: ch-28
"- You know how to use Serpensortia?" – Angela blinked in surprise.
"- It's a snake-summoning spell, and being a Parselmouth, do you think I wouldn't learn it?" – Harry snorted before casting it again, this time summoning a rattlesnake, which he gave the same command as the first snake. Then, he levitated Jet into the air.
"- Incendio." – Angela snapped out of her brief stupor, sending fire at the troll's face as soon as it managed to rip off the blindfold. The creature howled in pain and was distracted long enough for the snakes to bite it. Once that was done, Angela summoned a few more snakes to help Harry. Meanwhile, Harry levitated Jet onto the troll's shoulders, and the snake quickly sank its fangs into its neck.
"- Knock its club away, quickly," Harry instructed.
Angela didn't waste time arguing or asking questions and cast the spell on the troll's club. A double Flipendo knocked the weapon away, causing it to slam into the troll's face. The creature dropped its weapon, its nose broken, and it looked far worse for wear.
"- Retreat!" – Harry commanded the snakes as he levitated Jet away.
The troll's eyes rolled back, it stumbled, and then collapsed face-first onto the floor, right in front of Harry and Angela. Fortunately, they and the snakes managed to avoid being crushed.
"- Are you okay?" – Harry asked his familiar.
"- Better than him," – Jet hissed before climbing back onto Harry's shoulders.
"- Are you okay?" – he repeated the question, this time to Angela.
"- I'm fine," – the third-year nodded, glancing at the troll. "- Can't say the same for it."
"- Is it dead?"
"- I think it's just unconscious, but with the amount of venom in it, if it's not dead now, it won't last long."
Their conversation was interrupted by the sudden appearance of McGonagall, Flitwick, Snape, and Quirrell.
"- What…" – Professor McGonagall gasped at the sight of the troll and the mass of snakes.
"- Um, Professor, Angela and I summoned these snakes. Maybe we should deal with them first," – Harry suggested.
"- Filius, Severus, could you two start dispelling them?" – McGonagall quickly regained her composure and turned to her colleagues, who nodded and began their work. "- Now, you two can start explaining exactly what happened here!"
"- Professor, Mr. Potter and I were practicing spells, and when we finished, we were heading back to the Slytherin common room when we came across the troll," – Angela began. "- I cast a Stunner to distract it, then blinded it with a Obscuro. I was about to cast another spell when Harry set its blindfold on fire with Incendio."
"- On the blindfold?" – McGonagall blinked.
"- I set the blindfold on fire," – Harry confirmed, stepping into the conversation. Snape and Flitwick, who had finished dealing with the snakes, raised their eyebrows, and Quirrell flinched, taking a step back from the troll.
"- Why did you do that?" – McGonagall asked her next question.
"- It was trying to attack us," – Harry reminded her. "- Anyway, the fire caused it pain and distracted it. Then I used Serpensortia to summon a few snakes. Angela did the same and attacked it with fire again. All the snakes went after the troll, and then we both cast Flipendo on its club, making it hit the troll's face."
"- That's true, ma'am," – one of the portraits chimed in. "- I saw the whole thing."
"- An impressive story," – Snape drawled, eyeing his students. "- But there are still questions to answer, like why you weren't at the feast with the rest of the students?"
"- I didn't go because I wanted to keep Mr. Potter company," – Angela shrugged. "- And Harry didn't want to go because…"
"- Let me guess, too good to attend like everyone else?" – Snape sneered.
"- Severus!" – McGonagall snapped at him. Harry didn't answer immediately, instead taking a few deep breaths.
"- The thing is, Professor Snape," – Harry finally said, looking at his Head of House with a tone best described as forcibly polite, while Jet hissed a warning from his shoulder, "- I didn't feel like celebrating the anniversary of my parents' death."
Snape blinked for a moment, his face taking on a strange expression before he stepped back, his usual sneer disappearing.
...
"- Well…" – McGonagall awkwardly broke the silence. "- If you had been at the feast, you would have heard the warning about the troll. However, since attendance is not mandatory, you won't be penalized. Ten points each; not many students can say they fought a full-grown mountain troll and emerged victorious."
"- I'd like to award another ten points to Miss Zabini and fifteen to Mr. Potter for the excellent execution of spells," – Flitwick added. "- A Stunner on a third-year level, as well as summoning fire and snakes on a first-year level – that's impressive."
"- Indeed," – McGonagall agreed. "- You two may return to your common room. Professor Quirrell will escort you."
"- Thank you," – Potter and Zabini nodded before following the Defense professor.
"- V-v-very impressive victory," – Quirrell stammered as they made their way to the dungeons. "- E-especially for two such young s-s-students."
"- Thank you, Professor," Angela nodded.
"- Yes, thank you," – Harry echoed.
The rest of the walk passed in silence, though it was a rather awkward one.
"- Well… goodnight," – Quirrell bid them farewell as he left them at the entrance.
"- What do we tell the others?" – Harry asked before they entered.
"- The truth," – Angela shrugged. "- The smarter ones will ask the teachers and the portraits anyway. Vipera." – She gave the password, and the entrance opened, revealing the stares of every Slytherin.
"- Oh, for Merlin's sake," – Harry muttered under his breath.
"- When you tell them how you killed your uncle, don't forget to mention how I bit his neck and contributed to the victory," – Jet added.
"- You do realize that wasn't Uncle Vernon?"
"- Wasn't it?!" – the snake sounded genuinely surprised, though it was hard to tell if he was joking or serious.
"- No, Uncle Vernon is much uglier," – Harry reminded him.
"- Well, how was I supposed to know? They both had big bellies and smelled awful – practically twins. Most humans look the same anyway."
"- Yeah, yeah, I know you're not fond of humans," – Harry rolled his eyes.
"- Not all of them," – Jet huffed. "- I care about you and my pets."
The next day, Harry was calmly sitting at breakfast between Daphne and Tracey, casually ignoring the not-so-subtle stares from the rest of the school. The story of how they had fought the troll had spread quickly, and judging by what people were saying, it had been significantly embellished.
"- At least you didn't get hurt," – Draco commented. "- Flint would have thrown a fit if you got injured before the match."
"- Is Quidditch all you care about?!" – Tracey hissed. "- He could have died!"
"- Tracey, relax," – Harry said, pausing his meal as Draco raised his hands in surrender. "- I'm fine. Angela was with me, and even without her, I think I could have held out long enough to summon more snakes to finish it off."
"- Harry," – Daphne sighed. "- Trolls aren't easy to defeat, especially for third-years, let alone first-years. That's why so many students are talking about it."
