Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Nagini
As soon as Tom finished speaking, Robert felt the ground beneath him shift.
Clearly, the floor was about to collapse!
At the moment of the collapse, Robert quickly made a simple hand gesture and silently recited a spell in his heart.
"Shock Reduction to Stop Speed!"
Boom!
The entire floor of the living room split in two instantly, like a chocolate bar broken with force!
Tom and Robert plummeted into the gaping fissure.
Fortunately, Robert cast the shock-absorbing spell in time, softening their fall. They landed heavily but remained unscathed—no broken bones.
"Ah! What the hell just happened? It stinks!" Tom roared in frustration.
But he quickly stopped talking because the overwhelming stench made it almost impossible to breathe, let alone curse.
Robert covered his nose and scanned his surroundings. The dust from the collapse gradually settled.
A faint light streamed down from the opening above, illuminating their surroundings slightly, though the distance remained engulfed in darkness.
But this dim glow was enough for Robert to understand where they had fallen.
"The sewer."
Without hesitation, Robert cast another spell.
"Air Gathering!"
A transparent bubble formed around his head, filtering out the putrid smell. He repeated the spell for Tom.
Tom touched the bubble in surprise, then turned to Robert with a complicated expression.
"Is this another spell you invented?" His voice, muffled by the bubble, carried a hint of disbelief.
"Now's not the time to talk about this, Tom..." Robert remained on high alert, scanning their surroundings.
Tom fell silent, but his emotions were conflicted.
On the one hand, Robert's ability to create new spells made him feel inferior—he hated that feeling. On the other hand, they were in serious danger.
Whatever had caused the floor to collapse so easily, whether human or creature, was definitely not something to take lightly.
Suddenly, a strange rustling noise echoed in the darkness.
"Rustle... rustle..."
Tom stiffened.
"Maybe we should run now—"
Before he could finish, a massive serpent's head lunged from the shadows!
Its jaws gaped wide, revealing dagger-like fangs as it struck straight for Tom's head!
Tom was paralyzed with fear. His body refused to move, as if frozen in place.
All he could do was watch as the snake's enormous maw descended upon him.
"Protego!"
Bang!
Robert's Shield Charm repelled the snake, forcing its head back by half a meter!
"Tom! Don't just stand there! Say something!" Robert shouted.
"Ah? Say... what?"
Tom was still in shock from the near-death experience. His mind had gone completely blank.
Meanwhile, the massive serpent shook its head and lunged again.
"Protego!"
Robert cast the Shield Charm once more, slamming the snake backward.
"Tom! Talk to it!"
Robert's command finally reached Tom's sluggish brain.
He took a deep breath and forced himself to speak.
"Hiss... hiss... hiss..."
Tom's Parseltongue ability activated.
The giant serpent halted mid-attack, lifting its head in apparent confusion.
Though it didn't retreat, it no longer advanced either. Instead, it observed them, its forked tongue flicking in and out.
"What did it say to you?" Robert asked, his eyes never leaving the snake.
Tom frowned. "It... didn't say anything."
"Then what did you say?"
"I... I ordered it to leave!"
But the snake remained still, simply watching them.
"I think we should leave before it changes its mind," Robert suggested.
For once, Tom didn't argue. "I agree. But... why didn't it obey me?"
"Maybe you're too weak right now. Would you listen to someone weaker than you?"
Tom's pride took another hit, but he had no energy to argue.
Just as they started formulating an escape plan—
"Hiss!"
The snake attacked again!
Robert barely had time to react. He cast another Shield Charm, but this time, it barely slowed the creature down.
The serpent's fangs grazed Robert's shoulder before embedding into the ground!
Tom turned pale. "Hiss! (I order you to retreat!)"
The snake paused, but this time, something was different.
Its dark eyes gleamed with something almost... amused.
Then, it reared back, preparing for a second strike.
Robert clenched his fists. There's no way to run in a sewer this narrow.
If I can't escape... I'll have to fight.
But the snake's magic resistance was absurdly high! Even the Petrification Spell had bounced off its scales earlier.
Damn it. If I had just one more week to study, I wouldn't be stuck in this fight-or-die situation!
Just as Robert braced for the worst—
The snake froze.
Its entire body trembled violently, almost as if it were in pain.
"Hissss...!"
It let out a low, guttural sound, shaking uncontrollably.
Tom looked at Robert in shock. "Did you do that?"
"If I had that kind of power, would I still be running for my life?!" Robert snapped. "Stop talking! We need to get out of here while it's distracted!"
But Tom didn't move. Instead, he grabbed Robert's arm.
"Wait!"
Robert turned back, startled. "What's wrong?"
Tom's face was pale, his expression shaken. "It… it spoke!"
"What?"
Robert frowned. The only reason Tom would react this strongly was if the snake had said something shocking.
"What did it say?"
Tom swallowed hard. "It said… 'Run. I can barely hold myself back...'"
Robert's heart pounded. He turned back to the snake.
Sure enough, the serpent's trembling had subsided, but its eyes had changed. The savage bloodlust was gone, replaced by something more... lucid.
"Tom… ask it its name."
Tom hesitated. "Why?!"
"Just do it!"
Tom shot Robert a puzzled glance but obeyed.
A moment later, he turned back, his face even paler.
"It… it said its name is Nagini."
