Chapter 180: Who’s There? Come Out!

David's eyes darkened with fury as he silently followed the wizards.

They had passed by six rooms so far. Inside, he had counted twenty-six captives. Yet only fifteen or sixteen of them still clung to life, and even they were barely breathing—on the verge of death.

As they neared the final rooms, one of the wizards, a blond-haired man with loose curls, suddenly asked, "Did you administer the potion the day before yesterday?"

"Of course," another wizard beside him quickly replied.

"Good. We'll feed them again today. They should be ready when the next full moon arrives," the blond wizard said, nodding as he stepped towards the last few rooms.

Inside, several frail children huddled together, their ragged clothing barely clinging to their thin bodies. Weakly, they struggled to lift their heavy eyelids, as though trying to see who had come for them.

Damn it.

David clenched his fists, his rage bubbling dangerously beneath the surface.

Then, a sharp, furious voice shattered the silence.

"You sick, twisted beasts!"

David's stomach dropped. Jason, you fool!

Panic surged through him as he pressed himself against the wall, his heartbeat thundering in his ears.

"Someone's here! They're using a Disillusionment Charm!" the blond wizard barked. His expression twisted into one of pure malice. "Find them and kill them. We can't afford to let them expose this operation."

"Yes, sir!"

The other wizards raised their wands, sending a barrage of spells toward the walls, searching for the intruders.

Jason had foolishly shouted in anger, but he had managed to remain unnoticed—barely. He was pressed against the door, his outline faintly visible in the dim corridor. The shadows created by the uneven stonework provided him with a fragile disguise, but at the wizards' pace, he wouldn't stay hidden for long.

David knew he could take down the enemies ahead without issue, but protecting Jason in the chaos would be another matter entirely.

His mind raced. Then, an idea struck him.

The guards downstairs. If I move quickly, I can take them out silently.

His decision made, David vanished from the corridor, instantly reappearing near the base of the staircase.

Two wizards stood there, deep in conversation, completely oblivious to the disturbance above. They laughed and talked animatedly, their careless chatter filling the otherwise quiet space.

David's foot accidentally scraped against the stone floor, producing a faint sound.

He tensed—but the two wizards were too engrossed in their conversation to notice.

Taking a deep breath, David sprang forward.

"Hey!" he called.

The guards barely had time to react. Their eyes widened in shock before their minds were consumed by a sudden, overwhelming dizziness.

David lowered his wand, exhaling sharply as he retracted his Golden Eyes ability. A single tear slid down his cheek. The power had drained more energy than he'd anticipated, but there was no time to worry about that now.

With a swift flick of his wand, he levitated the unconscious bodies and carefully lowered them to the ground, hiding them out of sight.

Then, he transformed his appearance to match one of the fallen wizards. Taking a few deep breaths, he ran towards the corridor, shouting urgently,

"Who's there?! Come out!"

Instantly, a series of spells whizzed past him, striking the walls and floor in a dazzling display of light. David made sure to return fire, sending out a few random spells to create the illusion of an intense battle.

"Damn it! He's trying to escape!" he shouted, running towards the entrance.

Jason, still upstairs, heard the commotion and assumed David was under attack. Without hesitation, he dropped his Disillusionment Charm and began to fight.

"Shit! We've been ambushed!" The blond wizard's face twisted in rage.

"Sir—"

"No time! We'll deal with those upstairs first! There's no Apparating here, so even if there are more of them, they won't get out unscathed!"

The wizards immediately turned back, rushing towards the upper floors.

Perfect.

David smirked and quickly flipped to the Basilisk page in his enchanted picture book.

A massive, serpent-like shadow slithered into existence, its gleaming, golden eyes illuminating the dim corridor. The wizards, completely unaware, continued running.

David took a deep breath.

"Head!"

The blond wizard instinctively turned—and his scream was cut short. His body stiffened, eyes locked in an expression of horror as he collapsed, writhing in pain.

The Basilisk's power had weakened him significantly, but it wasn't enough to kill him outright.

"B-Basilisk! Why is there a Basilisk here?!" one of the remaining wizards stammered in terror.

Unfortunately, not everyone was so cautious. Another wizard glanced at the creature—and immediately fell to the ground, paralyzed.

David prepared to finish off the last enemy when another voice called out from upstairs.

"Hold on! I'm coming down to help you!"

Damn it.

Realizing Jason might accidentally get caught in the Basilisk's deadly gaze, David quickly dismissed the creature.

The last standing wizard sighed in relief. "It's gone," he whispered, smiling weakly.

David wasted no time. He flicked his wand.

"Expelliarmus!"

The wizard's wand flew from his grip, landing neatly in David's outstretched hand.

"Jace—" The man's dazed expression twisted in confusion.

David gave him a sheepish smile. "Oops. Forgot to drop the disguise."

With another quick flick of his wand, he bound the man tightly in enchanted ropes.

At that moment, Jason came barreling down the stairs.

He skidded to a stop, eyes widening at the scene before him.

"You did all this?" he asked in disbelief.

David shrugged. "Yeah. We need to go. Two of them managed to escape. Anna's probably fighting them right now."

Jason barely needed to hear another word. He turned on his heel and sprinted towards the exit like a furious bull.

At the entrance, the statue that had concealed the passage shifted aside once more. The sounds of battle grew louder.

David's eyes locked onto the distant fight—Anna was locked in combat with two wizards. Jason didn't hesitate, flashing forward and throwing himself into the fray.

But before David could join them, a new problem arose.

A squad of Ministry of Magic enforcers appeared, their wands raised.

"Who are you? Drop your wands and surrender immediately!"

David groaned. Of course, the Ministry shows up now.

Without missing a beat, he waved his wand, sending a cascade of Dragonfire hurtling toward them.

"Fall back!" one of the Aurors shouted.

In the chaos, David teleported to Jason's side. By now, they had subdued the last enemy.

"Time to go," David said quickly.

"What about the captives?" Jason asked.

"Let the Ministry handle them. We're heading to the mall."

Before the Aurors could recover, David darted back inside, grabbed the last restrained wizard, and vanished into the night.

Jason and Anna had already arrived at their safe house by the time he appeared.

Anna pointed to the bound wizard at David's feet. "And this guy?"

"He was with them," David said, nudging the man with his foot.

The wizard groaned but kept his eyes shut.

David crouched beside him, tapping his shoulder. "Okay, stop pretending. I know you're awake."

The man's eyelashes twitched.

David sighed dramatically. "Guess he's dead. Oh well. Let's bury him."

"No, no, no! Wait!" The man's eyes shot open in panic.

David smirked. "That's what I thought."

The wizard swallowed hard. "I—I was forced into this! They kidnapped me, just like the others in the cages! I had no choice!"

David exchanged a glance with Jason and Anna.

Yeah, we'll see about that.
