Chapter 97: Shen Xingxue (Second Update)
After Chu Mo left, Fang Mingtong looked at the Emperor and asked, "Your Majesty, do you truly intend to marry off one of the princesses to him?"
Xu Zhongliang also looked at the Emperor, his eyes filled with doubts. Indeed, Chu Mo was outstanding, with a bright future ahead of him that anyone could see. But even if he was commendable, the Emperor of Great Xia wouldn't need to eagerly offer his daughter's hand in marriage to him.
Although Great Xia was a secular country, it was full of talents! Moreover, from a father's perspective, finding a brilliant genius did not guarantee a brilliant marriage.
The Emperor glanced at the two of them and sighed, "Your views, I naturally understand. I, a ruler of a nation, do not have many princesses under my knees. They may not all be stunning beauties, but at least they are attractive - am I really worried that I can't marry them off? The problem is, it seems... Xingxue is...somewhat fond of that boy!"
"What? Princess Xingxue...is fond of Chu Mo?" Xu Zhongliang stood there startled, then forced a smile and said, "Actually, thinking about it, this isn't entirely unexpected. Princess Xingxue, who has been within her sect for so many years, is very pure. Right when she stepped into worldly life, she experienced such an incident, it's entirely normal for her to have a good impression of Chu Mo, her savior."
Fang Mingtong muttered to himself, "If it's Princess Xingxue, she would actually be a good match with that boy!"
The Emperor sighed, "Forget it, I can't be bothered with these affairs of the heart, let them be. The reason I called you two here today is because I just obtained some news from Great Qi..."
As soon as Chu Mo walked out the door, a palace guard stepped out from the shadows, respectfully leading Chu Mo to the banquet hall.
As a guard serving the Emperor, he was clearly aware of all the events that had transpired that day. Therefore, although Chu Mo was still a teenager, this guard did not dare to treat him like a normal child. His words were filled with courtesy.
By the time Chu Mo returned to the banquet hall, the place was lively again, as if nothing had happened. However, when Chu Mo appeared at the entrance of the hall, the atmosphere in the banquet hall...became stagnant!
The man makes the name, the tree makes the shadow.
Daring to behead a fourth-rank official in front of the entire Great Xia's top nobility, in the presence of the Crown Prince, the current Grand Councilor and Marshal during the New Year's dinner in the royal banquet hall... This audacity was truly terrifying!
Most importantly, there were no consequences after the beheading!
This was truly horrifying!
Chu Mo looked around and noticed that the Crown Prince and the Second Prince were no longer there. Presumably, they were too embarrassed to stay and had gone to bid farewell to the Third Prince, Xia Hao.
With Xia Hao's departure, the Crown Prince, Xia Ying, had lost an assisting hand.
"I guess the Crown Prince must hate me even more now." Chu Mo murmured to himself, but he wasn't afraid. Because even without this incident, his grudge with the Crown Prince was already deep!
Zhao Yi had picked a fight with him out of boredom? The lies he fabricated were only believable to a fool. Without someone backing him, even if they gave him a hundred times the courage, he wouldn't dare to do such a thing!
But whether it was the Emperor, Minister Xu, or Marshal Fang...none of them mentioned how this matter should be handled next.
Chu Mo didn't even ask... it wasn't because he was politically savvy, but rather he understood that, while this matter definitely involved the Crown Prince, the Emperor probably wasn't ready to amplify the issue further.
For Chu Mo though, this matter couldn't just end like this.
Even if the Crown Prince doesn't bother him anymore, he would take the initiative to clarify the situation. Chu Mo had no grudge against the Crown Prince. Even though my grandfather rejected your invitation, he was still serving Great Xia. What's the meaning of targeting me like this?
"Chu Mo...over here!" Xu Fufu's voice came from a corner of the hall. A smile instantly appeared on Chu Mo's face. He then began walking toward the voice.
Everyone in the hall spontaneously cleared a path for this elegant and handsome young man.
Chu Mo acknowledged them with a smile, and everyone returned friendly. They all showed a kind smile, acknowledging this nearly fourteen-year-old boy.
From the affectionate, respectful, or aloof smiles of these people, Chu Mo could clearly feel their attitudes towards him.
He didn't care much, and continued to walk towards Xu Fufu.
But when he saw Xu Fufu, Chu Mo's gaze fell on a quiet young girl sitting in the corner. He was slightly taken aback, thinking to himself: I didn't expect...she would also be here.
The girl was also looking at him, a pair of pure eyes filled with a hint of shyness and curiosity, watching him intently. Seeing Chu Mo look over, her face turned red, but she did show a coy smile towards Chu Mo.
Xu Fufu, standing nearby, was practically dumbstruck, a look of disbelief plastered on his face. He even started to wonder - who was the real playboy of Yanhuang City?
Then he saw Chu Mo with his own eyes, simply nodding in acknowledgment at the pretty and elegant girl, making him roll his eyes, "Indeed... I, Xu Fufu, am lost for words!"
By this point, Chu Mo had already made his way over to Fufu's side, sitting beside him. Seeing the dazed expression on Fufu's face, he laughed, "Why the long face? Did Sister Mei ditch you?"
Fufu ignored Chu Mo's taunts, sweeping his gaze over to the elegant girl, "Brother Hei, who's that girl? Why does she keep staring at you?"
Chu Mo didn't turn his head, a teasing smile on his face as he looked at Fufu, "What, you fancy her?"
"What kind of joke is that? How could I compete with my own brother?" Fufu replied, a look that spoke 'you underestimate me' on his face.
Chu Mo nonchalantly responded, "She's a princess. If you want to be a prince consort, feel free to pursue her."
Fufu was left stunned. Chewing his lower lip, he mumbled, "Now I know who she is..."
At this point, the elegant girl surprisingly stood up from her own seat, walked over to Chu Mo, and knelt in a deep curtsey, "I was in such a rush last time, and was too scared to thank you for saving my life. Now, I'm finally able to express my gratitude. I, Shen Xingxue, would like to thank Young Master Chu for his kindness."
"Shen?" Fufu asked, puzzled as he looked at the pretty girl, "Aren't you...?"
The girl glanced at Fufu, and casually said, "I take my mother's last name."
"Oh, alright. I get it now." Fufu realized.
Chu Mo said, "When injustice is done, it is only right to stand up against it. Anyone would do the same, hence, the princess need not be so formal."
"That day, Young Master Chu wasn't the only person present, but you were the only one who lifted a hand to help." Shen Xingxue looked at Chu Mo, "May I sit here?"
Chu Mo couldn't help but feel a peculiar sensation after recalling the emperor's roundabout comment about Xingxue, but he didn't know how to refuse her. All he could do was to nod, "Of course, this place is your domain, Your Highness."
A blush crawled up Xingxue's face as she said softly, "I'm also a stranger to this place."
Unable to hold back, Fufu asked, "Your Highness, I'm quite puzzled about something. May I ask you a question?"
Xingxue looked at Fufu, "The emperor, my father, told me not to talk to you…"
"..." Fufu was left speechless.
Chu Mo managed to hold back his laughter, mumbling under his breath, "Like father, like son?"
Fufu sighed helplessly, "Your Highness, you've misunderstood. I'm not the person you think I am."
"Ah, I'm sorry. I don't know why my father told me that." Xingxue sheepishly looked at Fufu, "Feel free to ask your question."
Fufu said, "I heard the princess grew up in a martial sect?"
"Yes, I did." Xingxue said, gently nodding.
"Aren't disciples from these sects usually very powerful? Why then, on that day…" Fufu looked at Xingxue in confusion, "This doesn't make sense…"
Although Xingxue was naive, she wasn't stupid and immediately understood what Fufu was hinting at. Her face turned red as she whispered, "I... I don't know any martial arts."
