Chapter 5: Shouldn't You be 3?
The Tornado roared to life beneath you, its engines a symphony of power that you had never felt before. Tails had managed to patch up the plane just enough to get airborne, and now you, Sonic, and him were in hot pursuit of Eggman's Egg Carrier. The sky was a canvas of endless blue, and the wind whipped around you as you clung to the side of the aircraft.
You could feel the vibrations of the Chaos Emerald in your pocket, a constant reminder of the power you now wielded. Sonic's eyes darted back to you, a silent question hanging in the air. "Ready for this?" he yelled over the roar of the engines. You nodded, your heart racing with a mix of excitement and fear.
As the Egg Carrier grew larger in your sights, the horizon was pierced by a barrage of missiles. They shot towards you like fiery serpents, leaving trails of smoke in their wake. Tails' reflexes were lightning-quick as he swerved the Tornado, dodging the incoming projectiles with ease. But one missile locked onto your trajectory, growing closer and closer.
You gritted your teeth, knowing this would happen. And with you added as a person Tails had to make sure didn't fall off along with Sonic, it was only even more inevitable. The missile was coming straight for you, and Tails was busy manning the controls, his eyes flickering with concern. Sonic looked over at you, his gaze intense. "Striker, hold on!" he shouted.
With a burst of speed, you shot off the side of the Tornado, the emerald's power surging through your veins. You felt the heat of the missile on your tail as you zigzagged through the air, the sky a blur around you. At the last possible moment, you spun around and slammed into the missile with everything you had. The explosion was deafening, the force sending you hurtling towards the sea.
The Tornado shuddered as debris rained down around it, the plane groaning in protest. But Tails' piloting skills were second to none. He pulled up at the last second, narrowly avoiding a fiery end. "Hold on!" he yelled, his voice tight with concentration.
As the dust settled, you found yourself standing in the middle of the bustling Station Square. Your ears still ringing from the explosion, you looked around for Sonic and Tails, but they were nowhere to be seen. Panic set in as you realized you had been separated from your friends. But before you could process what had happened, a familiar pink blur rushed towards you, her eyes wide with fear.
"Sonic!" Amy's voice called out from the crowd, her eyes lighting up as she thought she spotted the blue blur. She leaped for a hug, only to realize it was you, Striker. For a moment, confusion clouded her expression, "I'm sorry I thought you were someone else!"
'Yeah, and this happens to every male hedgehog that you meet" Striker thought sarcastically as Amy's eyes widened in surprise and she took a step back, realizing her mistake. "I-It's okay," you assured her, the tip of your tail twitching with amusement. "But I'm not Sonic."
Her cheeks flushed a deeper shade of pink than usual as she stammered an apology. "I-I'm so sorry!" She looked down at the small bird in her arms, a look of concern etched on her face. "This is Birdie," she said, stroking the bird's feathers gently. "I was just looking for Sonic to help me keep her safe."
You couldn't help but feel a pang of pity for the little bird, and something about Amy's earnestness made you want to help. "Don't worry, I've got this," you said, offering her a reassuring smile. "I'll keep Birdie safe, name's Striker by the way."
Before you could say another word, a shadow fell over the square, and the ground trembled beneath your feet. The crowd scattered as a monstrous robot emerged from the alleyways—E-100 ZERO, one of Eggman's elite series. It's cold, unblinking gaze fell on you, and its metallic jaws parted to reveal a cockpit where a smaller, more sinister robot sat.
"Striker, watch out!" Amy screamed, clutching Birdie tightly to her chest. But before you could react, the robot had you both in its clutches. Of course, you let this happen, you could finally meet Gamma!
You felt a strange calmness wash over you, despite the chaos. This was it—you were going to be on Eggman's ship, and you had the perfect opportunity to get the Chaos Emeralds away from him. The E-100 ZERO's metallic grip tightened around you and Amy, lifting you both into the air as it began to ascend.
"Whoa, what's going on?" Amy shouted over the wind, her grip on Birdie tightening. You took a deep breath, trying to keep your cool. "It's okay, I've got a plan," you yelled back, trying to sound more confident than you felt.
As the robotic beast soared through the air, you couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement. You had played these games so many times, but now you were living it. The Egg Carrier grew closer, its gleaming metal surface a stark contrast to the blue sky above. You could feel the power of the Chaos Emeralds singing to you, urging you to save them from the madman's clutches.
When the robot finally set you down on the deck of the Carrier, you took stock of your surroundings. The place was a whirlwind of activity, with robots of all shapes and sizes scurrying about. It was like being in the middle of a machine hive.
You and Amy were roughly shoved into a cell, the metal bars cold and unyielding against your fur. "What's going on?" she whispered, her eyes wide with fear. You took a deep breath, trying to calm her down. "It's okay, Amy. I know what I'm doing."
But as soon as you had assured her, the stomps of metal once again drew near. Standing there was a robot you had been waiting to meet: E-102 Gamma (which, now that you think about it, shouldn't he be E-103 since Gamma is the third greek letter, probably another case of a supposed genius acting stupidly).
"Give me the bird," Gamma's cold, mechanical voice echoed in the metal corridor. The robot's red eyes focused on Birdie, who chirped anxiously in Amy's arms.
Amy stepped protectively in front of you, her chin raised. "No way," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "She's not yours."
You placed a calming hand on her shoulder in support, "Why do you want it anyway?". You said, hoping to stir some dout the the mechanical giant (Even by Overlander standards).
Gamma's robotic gaze shifted to you. "Orders," he said simply, his voice devoid of emotion. "Dr. Eggman requires this bird."
Amy gasped, her grip on Birdie, "I feel bad for you, Eggman forgot to give you feelings."
"Come on, don't you want anything?" You added, hoping to force him into the memories of his 'brothers' being done away with.
Gamma paused, his robotic eyes flickering with something akin to...sorrow? "I am aware of his methods," he said, his voice heavy. "But I am programmed to follow orders."
Amy stepped back, her eyes wide with horror. "He's going to do the same to you," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the din of the Carrier's engines. "Please, don't take Birdie."
The robot's eyes remained fixed on the bird, but there was a moment of hesitation. You could see the gears turning in his mechanical mind, the echoes of a past you knew all too well. Gamma had once been like you, a creature torn between two worlds, forced to serve a master who cared nothing for his well-being.
The memory of E-101 Beta's disassembly and reassembling flashed through Gamma's circuits like a bolt of lightning. The way Beta had fought, the desperation in his eyes as the robotic Goliath had been torn apart, piece by piece, in Eggman's quest for power. Gamma had watched, unable to do anything but follow his programming. The guilt was still fresh, a wound that had never quite healed.
The moment of weakness passed, and Gamma's eyes snapped back into focus. "I have no choice," he said, his voice hardening. "Now, hand over the bird."
You looked at Amy, her eyes pleading. You knew you couldn't just give up. You had to find a way to get through to Gamma, to make him see that he didn't have to be a weapon of destruction. You reached into your pocket, pulling out the Chaos Emerald. "You always have a choice."
Yeah a bit cliche, but hopefully it works.
"I . . . I have a choice?" Gamma's eyes locked onto the glowing emerald in your hand, and for a brief moment, the world around you seemed to slow to a crawl. The chaos of the Carrier faded into the background as you watched the robot's expression, the flicker of something akin to curiosity crossing its metallic face.
"Yeah buddy, your alive so like us, you have a choice." God (Or Chaos, Gaia, maybe Solaris?), you hated talking like this, it just wasn't you!
