Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Sparks and Strength
The days following Izuku's quirk awakening were a whirlwind of training and research. He spent every spare moment reading about muscle development, practicing basic martial arts techniques, and experimenting with his quirk. But despite his progress, there was one thing he hadn't done yet: tell anyone outside his family about his quirk. That all changed one afternoon at the park.
Izuku was sitting on a bench, flipping through a book on Combat Sambo, when he heard a familiar voice.
"Hey, Deku! What are you doing here, nerd?"
Izuku looked up to see Katsuki Bakugo standing a few feet away, his usual scowl plastered across his face. Behind him were a couple of other kids from the neighborhood, all watching with varying degrees of amusement.
"Oh, hi, Kacchan," Izuku said, closing his book. "I was just… reading."
Bakugo sneered. "Of course you were. Still trying to be a hero, huh? Too bad you're just a quirkless loser."
Izuku flinched at the familiar insult, but this time, it didn't sting as much. He had a quirk now—a powerful one. But before he could say anything, Bakugo's hands sparked with small explosions, his quirk flaring to life.
"Check this out, Deku," Bakugo said, holding up his hand. "This is what a real quirk looks like. Explosion! Bet you'll never have anything this cool."
The other kids laughed, and Izuku felt a flicker of frustration. He didn't want to show off, but he also didn't want to keep hiding his quirk. Taking a deep breath, he stood up.
"Kacchan," Izuku said, his voice steady, "I do have a quirk now."
Bakugo froze, his smirk faltering. "What did you say?"
"I said I have a quirk," Izuku repeated. "It's called Herculean Strength."
Bakugo's eyes narrowed, and he took a step closer. "Prove it."
Izuku hesitated for a moment, then nodded. He looked around and spotted a large rock near the edge of the playground. It was about the size of a basketball and looked heavy, but Izuku knew it would be nothing for his quirk.
He walked over to the rock, crouched down, and wrapped his hands around it. Focusing, he felt his muscles tense, the power surging through him. With a grunt, he lifted the rock effortlessly, holding it above his head for a few seconds before setting it back down.
The other kids stared in stunned silence, and even Bakugo looked surprised—though he quickly masked it with his usual scowl.
"Tch," Bakugo said, crossing his arms. "So you're strong. Big deal. That doesn't make you a hero."
Izuku met Bakugo's gaze, his determination shining through. "Maybe not yet. But I'm going to train and get stronger. I'm going to be a hero, Kacchan. Just you wait."
Bakugo's eyes flashed with anger, and he took a step forward, his hands sparking. "You think you're better than me, Deku? You think you can just show up with some lame strength quirk and act all high and mighty?"
Izuku shook his head. "I don't think I'm better than you, Kacchan. But I'm not going to let you push me around anymore. I have a quirk now, and I'm going to use it to become the best hero I can be."
For a moment, it looked like Bakugo was going to lunge at him. But then he smirked, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "Fine. If you're so tough, let's see what you've got. Fight me, Deku."
Izuku hesitated. He didn't want to fight Bakugo, but he also knew that backing down now would only make things worse. Taking a deep breath, he nodded. "Alright, Kacchan. But let's keep it fair."
The other kids formed a loose circle around them, their eyes wide with excitement. Bakugo didn't waste any time—he lunged at Izuku, his hands sparking with small explosions. Izuku dodged to the side, his enhanced reflexes allowing him to avoid the attack.
Bakugo growled and swung again, but Izuku blocked the blow with his forearm, the impact sending a shockwave through the air. Bakugo's eyes widened in surprise, but he quickly recovered, launching a series of rapid strikes.
Izuku focused on defense, using the footwork he had been practicing to stay light on his feet. He dodged and weaved, his muscles responding with precision and efficiency. But he knew he couldn't just keep dodging forever.
When Bakugo left an opening, Izuku took it. He stepped in close, grabbed Bakugo's arm, and used his strength to flip him onto the ground. Bakugo landed with a grunt, but he was back on his feet in an instant, his eyes blazing with fury.
"You think you're so tough?" Bakugo shouted, his hands glowing with larger explosions. "Let's see how you handle this!"
Izuku braced himself, his muscles tensing as he prepared for the attack. But before Bakugo could strike, a voice rang out.
"That's enough!"
Both boys turned to see Inko standing at the edge of the park, her hands on her hips and a stern look on her face. "Katsuki Bakugo, you should be ashamed of yourself! And Izuku, what are you doing fighting in the park?"
Izuku lowered his hands, his face flushing with embarrassment. "Sorry, Mom."
Bakugo scowled but didn't say anything. He shot Izuku one last glare before turning and stomping away, the other kids following behind him.
As they walked home, Inko sighed. "Izuku, I know you're excited about your quirk, but you can't go around picking fights. Especially not with Katsuki."
"I wasn't picking a fight, Mom," Izuku said quietly. "He challenged me. And… I didn't want to back down."
Inko looked down at him, her expression softening. "I understand, sweetie. But you need to be careful. Your quirk is powerful, but it's not invincible. And fighting like that could get you hurt."
Izuku nodded. "I know, Mom. I'll be more careful."
Inko smiled and ruffled his hair. "Good. Now, let's get home. You have a lot of training to do if you're going to be a hero."
Izuku smiled back, his determination renewed. He had a long way to go, but he was ready for the challenge. And he knew one thing for sure: this was only the beginning.
