Highschool DxD: Spin to Win

Chapter 19: Ch 19: Vs Sona [ II ]

The tension in the air was thick, like the calm before a storm. The freezing winds that whipped around me slowed down just enough for me to catch my breath, my chest rising and falling with each heavy intake of air. Sona was still standing there, watching me with an unwavering expression, as if waiting for me to do something truly impressive.

I wasn't sure if I could. But I had to.

I quickly analyzed her movements, recalling everything I'd seen so far. She was fast, precise, and graceful. She moved with the poise of a trained fighter, able to anticipate and counter every single move I made. In other words, I was fighting a monster, and I was starting to feel outmatched.

Sona hadn't even broken a sweat yet.

But that only made me more determined. I couldn't let this chance slip by. If she wanted me to push her, then that's exactly what I'd do. No more holding back. I had to show her that I wasn't just some guy who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I was going to take this seriously.

My ice powers flared up again, stronger this time. I spread my arms wide, feeling the energy surge through my veins. It was like a dam had broken inside me, releasing all of the magic that had been bottled up. The air around me grew colder—so cold that I could see my breath crystallizing in front of me.

Sona tilted her head slightly, her sharp eyes watching me intently. I could almost feel her gauging my next move.

I narrowed my eyes, refusing to let her intimidate me. This was my moment.

"Alright, Sona, here it comes!" I shouted, my voice barely audible over the growing howl of the winds.

I leapt forward, sliding across the ice with incredible speed. My mind was focused only on one thing—getting close enough to land a hit. I wasn't aiming for victory. I wasn't aiming to defeat her. But I could definitely show her that I could make things interesting.

I swung my arms wide, sending a wave of ice crashing in her direction. But I didn't expect it to hit her. No, this was a distraction. The real attack came when I skated to her other side, aiming for the opening I had seen in her defense.

The ice barrier she had summoned earlier was still there, but now, it was beginning to crack slightly from the force of my previous attacks. If I could just get close enough...

Sona's eyes flickered in surprise as she saw me dart to her left, quickly raising another barrier to block my path. But I was already moving again—this time, I wasn't stopping. I used my magic to propel myself even faster, skating along the ice like a blur, getting dangerously close to her.

Sona reacted almost immediately, raising her hand to form another barrier, but something inside me told me this was the moment. I wasn't just moving with my body. I was moving with the flow of the ice around me, harnessing the cold in a way I hadn't before. The air itself seemed to bend around me as I shot forward, faster than I had ever moved.

In the final moments before impact, everything seemed to slow down. The world turned into a blur of blue and white as I reached out with my ice-clad hand, aiming right for the gap in Sona's defense.

And then—

Crash.

My fist collided with her side, the force of the impact sending a shockwave of cold through the air. The ice enveloped her momentarily, and for the briefest of moments, I thought I'd completely overwhelmed her.

But then, just as quickly, Sona's barrier shattered, and she stumbled backward, her eyes wide in mild shock. She caught herself just before hitting the ground, her hand grazing the frozen surface for balance.

I froze in place, my chest heaving, staring at her in disbelief. I… I actually landed a hit.

Sona stood there, one hand resting on her hip, the other raised slightly in front of her chest as if she were trying to regain her composure. Her lips parted as if she were about to speak, but then she just… smiled.

I blinked, processing the moment. "Did I actually—?"

"You…" Sona began, her smile growing ever so slightly. "Impressive."

My eyes widened. I had actually hit her. It wasn't much, but it was enough to make her react. And that was the best I could have hoped for.

"I didn't expect you to get through my defenses so quickly," she admitted, her voice soft but laced with respect. "You've definitely pushed me to my limits."

I gave a sheepish grin. "Well, I told you I'd bring my A-game."

She raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "That was certainly more than I anticipated. Your ice magic is more refined than I thought, and your ability to adapt is impressive."

I couldn't help but feel a bit of pride swell in my chest. "Thanks," I said, brushing some stray hair from my face. "I've been working on it. I have a bit of a sweet tooth, so… you know, ice cream and all that. Gotta make sure I don't overdo it."

Sona's smile turned into a small chuckle, which was a rare thing to witness from her. "You're certainly full of surprises."

I wiped the sweat off my forehead, realizing just how exhausting that last push had been. My energy was starting to run low, but the adrenaline was still keeping me on my feet. Still, I needed to be careful. I couldn't afford to overexert myself.

Sona nodded, straightening up and finally lowering her hand. "Alright, Kazuya. I think that's enough for today."

I blinked, surprised that she was calling it quits so soon. "Wait, that's it? I mean, I hit you, so I figured you'd… well, go all out and crush me or something."

She tilted her head with an amused look. "No, that's not necessary. You've shown me that you've got potential. I just wanted to see your abilities in action. I can tell you've still got a lot to learn, but you've got the drive. I'm impressed."

I couldn't believe it. She was actually impressed?

"Thanks," I said, trying to hide the slight grin tugging at my lips. "I wasn't really expecting you to say that."

Sona's serious expression softened, her eyes warm. "You've earned my respect, Kazuya."

For a second, I just stood there, stunned. Respect from someone like her was no small thing. And I couldn't help but feel a bit proud of myself.

"Alright," I said, wiping my forehead again. "But I'll warn you—next time, I'll go even further. You won't get off that easy."

Sona's smile returned, her tone light. "I'll be looking forward to it."

And with that, the spar was over.

But I had learned something important today: I wasn't just some weakling anymore. I'd landed a hit on one of the strongest people I'd ever met—and that meant a whole lot more than any victory ever could.

With just one of my abilities, heh.
