Chapter 8: A lesson in strength and strategy.
Seeing Rin in his current state, Hayes consoled him by patting his back gently and speaking in a reassuring tone.
"Don't think too hard about your mistake. Anyone could've made it, and Min-Ju isn't one to hold a grudge. She's still your trainer, and she sticks to her code of conduct. Trust me, she won't be too harsh on you."
These words seemed to ease Rin's tension. He had been bracing for the worst, especially given how Hayes had reacted earlier when he boasted about winning an argument against Min-Ju.
Taking a deep breath, Rin felt the weight of his anxiety lift.
"You really got me there," Rin admitted, his voice cracking slightly. "I was terrified. After seeing her in action today, I know how strong she is."
As the boys continued their conversation, Min-Ju overheard them while setting the table. A mischievous smile crept onto her face as she walked to fetch the food.
After a short while, she called out in a commanding tone, "Rin! Hayes! Aren't you two going to eat? Or are you already full from losing the game?"
Hayes, fully aware that Min-Ju might be plotting something as payback for Rin's earlier remark, responded carefully. In a calm voice, he said, "I already ate on my way back. I'll take my dinner later."
Unaware of Hayes' cautious behavior, Rin walked over to the dining table. Hayes watched him with a sly smile, suppressing a laugh. Rin, oblivious to any impending mischief, took his seat and eagerly took a spoonful of food.
The moment the food touched his tongue, Rin's face contorted in disgust. It was as if an entire bag of salt had been dumped into the dish. With a sour expression, he exclaimed, "Oh my God! Why is this food so salty?"
Unable to continue eating, Rin stood up abruptly. Meanwhile, Hayes burst into hysterical laughter, tears welling in his eyes.
"After offending someone, you still felt confident enough to eat their food?" Hayes teased. "Well, don't worry. You're safe now—for combat training tomorrow."
Realizing the consequences of his earlier argument with Min-Ju, Rin sighed in defeat. He walked over to her, bowing slightly as an apology.
Min-Ju, accepting his gesture, smiled gently and whispered, "I appreciate your willingness to apologize."
Rin, however, remained silent, not wanting to provoke her further. Afterward, he grabbed a snack and drink before heading to bed, a gloomy expression still etched on his face.
---
The next morning, at five o'clock, Min-Ju expected Rin to still be asleep. However, she was surprised to see the light in his room on. Peeking in, she found him already dressed and waiting.
"Why are you up so early? This isn't like you," she remarked, raising an eyebrow.
Rin smiled brightly. "I'm in a good mood today! I have lessons with Hayes later, so I want to get everything done before he heads to the association."
Min-Ju nodded approvingly and led him to the home gym.
Upon entering, Rin was greeted by bright, energizing lights, upbeat music, and the invigorating scent of the gym. They moved to the training area, where Min-Ju handed him a sheet of paper.
"This is your training schedule for today," she said.
"I expect you to do better than yesterday so we can finish quickly. Remember, strength isn't everything. Keep a calm mind and let your body and mind work as one."
Rin nodded, determination shining in his eyes. After a few stretches, he dropped to the ground, placing his palms firmly on the surface to begin push-ups. This time, his movements were smooth and controlled, a stark improvement from the previous day.
Watching his progress, Min-Ju's eyes widened in surprise. She let out an impressed "Ooh," her lips forming a perfect circle.
"I'm really impressed," she admitted.
"You've made incredible progress. I believe you can break even more limits if you keep believing in yourself. As a reward, I have a gift for you after your lessons with Hayes."
---
Thirty minutes later, Rin and Min-Ju stood in the training ring, ready for combat training. Min-Ju's face turned serious, her voice steady and commanding.
"We'll begin with hand-to-hand combat," she announced. "Come at me with everything you've got. No holding back—because if you do, you might get injured."
Rin clenched his fists, his resolve unwavering. "Understood," he said, stepping forward with determination.
The fights begins with a flurry motion, as Rin lunges forward throwing a powerful kick. Seeing this, Min-Ju steps sideways throwing Rin off balance after which she proceeds to give him a chop on his back.
With his body already off balance Rin fall down onto the ring with the sound of his groan echoed through out the room.
Not giving up Rin charges again planning to catch Min-Ju off guard but Min-Ju wasn't an experience fighter for nothing.
Seeing through his attack, Min-Ju changes her position and grappling his arm and almost pins him down but Rin being flexible gets off the grip and turns around to give a kick to Min-Ju assuming that she was already off guard.
As Rin was about to land the kick, Min-Ju already of balance using her advantage as a hunter, she quickly moves out of the way dodging the kick.
Rin suprised by this move maintains his balance and gets in his fighting stance ready to continue fight with a smirk in his face and hands signaling to Min-Ju to come attack him.
Then after a few crack of the her neck and the knuckles on her fingers, as she recovers from the attack that almost landed on her and gets ready to get serious with Rin. And with a serious expression on her face she says,' you really got lucky back there but no lucks for you boy.'
As the fight becomes more intense with Rin throwing punches, blocks and counterattacks exchange in a blur.
As Min-Ju used her agility to avoid Rin's punches. While Rin relied on his punches and kicks towards Min-Ju trying to hit her but it was to no avail as he was getting hit but unable to hit Min-Ju.
Finally, Min-Ju spots an opening and hits him at the back of his neck which seemed to renders Rin immobile, which secured Min-Ju victory over Rin.
