Chapter 17: CHAPTER 16
The battle is over.
But the silence it leaves behind is deafening.
The clearing is in ruins, the earth cracked and scorched where my power lashed out. The trees that once stood tall are now splintered, their broken limbs stretching toward the sky like the fingers of the dead. The air is thick with the scent of burning wood, blood, and something older—something that doesn't belong in this world.
The Council is gone. The Enforcer has vanished.
And yet, my body is still humming with power.
My breath comes in ragged gasps, my limbs trembling from exhaustion. The heat beneath my skin hasn't faded completely, but it's different now—less wild, less uncontrollable. It feels… settled, like a storm that has found its eye.
I don't know if that's a good thing.
Kieran stands a few feet away, his golden eyes locked onto me with something that looks a lot like disbelief. His hands are clenched at his sides, his jaw tight, his entire body coiled like he's waiting for me to collapse.
But I don't.
I refuse to.
Caelum is the first to break the silence. He steps forward, brushing a layer of dust from his jacket like he wasn't just part of a fight that nearly tore reality apart. His silver eyes gleam as they flick between me and the spot where the Enforcer disappeared.
"Well," he muses. "That was dramatic."
I shoot him a glare, my voice hoarse. "Not the time, Caelum."
He smirks, unbothered. "It's always the time for sarcasm, little wolf."
Kieran growls low in his throat. "Say one more word, and I'll rip your tongue out."
Caelum sighs dramatically. "So hostile."
I ignore both of them, my mind still spinning with the why of it all.
Why did the Council leave?
Why didn't they finish me when they had the chance?
And most importantly—what did I do to the Enforcer?
I turn back to the spot where he had stood, where I had unmade him. A shiver runs down my spine.
I didn't just wound him.
I didn't just fight him.
I broke him.
But how?
My fingers tremble slightly as I look down at my hands. They look normal—no glowing, no strange markings, no visible remnants of the power that had exploded out of me. But I felt it.
I still feel it.
And that terrifies me.
---
The Alpha's Fury
Kieran moves first.
His boots crunch against the broken ground as he strides toward me, his golden eyes burning. He's still covered in the remnants of battle—his shirt torn, his arms scraped and bloodied from the fight. But he doesn't seem to notice.
He stops right in front of me, his presence towering, suffocating. "What the hell was that?"
I force myself to meet his gaze. "I don't know."
His jaw tightens. "The hell you don't."
Anger sparks in my chest, cutting through the exhaustion. "Do you think I wanted this?" I snap, shoving past him. "Do you think I asked for whatever the hell just happened?"
He grabs my wrist before I can move away. His grip isn't rough, but it's firm—grounding. "Aria—"
I rip my hand free, my voice shaking. "Don't."
Something flickers across his face. Frustration. Guilt. Something else.
But I don't want to see it.
I don't want to see him.
Because no matter how much Kieran tries to act like he cares, I know the truth.
He rejected me.
And even now, after everything, he's still looking at me like I'm a problem he doesn't know how to solve.
I turn away before the lump in my throat can choke me.
---
The Truth That Changes Everything
Caelum is watching me when I face him again, his silver eyes unreadable. He hasn't moved from his spot near the wreckage of a fallen tree, his arms crossed, his expression carefully blank.
But I know him well enough by now to see that he's calculating.
Planning.
He knows something.
"Spit it out," I say, my voice sharper than I intended.
Caelum's lips twitch into a smirk. "Patience, little wolf."
"I'm done with patience."
He studies me for a long moment. Then, finally—
"You broke the Enforcer's tether," he says simply.
I frown. "Tether?"
Caelum nods. "He wasn't just a soldier of the Council. He was bound to them. Controlled." He tilts his head. "And you unmade that bond."
A chill runs down my spine. "How?"
His smirk fades. "That's the real question, isn't it?"
I swallow hard. "What does that mean?"
Caelum steps closer, his silver eyes glinting. "It means, little wolf…" His voice lowers, almost reverent. "You didn't just awaken."
His next words send ice through my veins.
"You rewrote fate."
---
A Future That Was Never Meant to Be
The world tilts.
No.
That's not possible.
I shake my head. "I—no. I didn't—"
Caelum exhales slowly, watching me with something eerily close to fascination. "The Council tried to erase your kind because they feared the Lunarborn would change the balance of power."
He leans in slightly.
"They were right."
I feel sick.
Because if he's telling the truth—if I did just change something fundamental in the universe—then what else am I capable of?
Kieran moves beside me, his energy sharp with tension. "This isn't just about the Council anymore."
Caelum nods. "No. It's about you."
I stare at the broken ground, my hands shaking.
I never wanted this.
I never wanted to be special. To be hunted. To be something more than a normal wolf.
But fate doesn't care what I want.
I look up at Caelum. "What happens now?"
His smirk returns, sharp and knowing.
"Now?" He gestures toward the ruined battlefield, toward the empty space where the Enforcer had disappeared.
"Now we wait and see what comes for you next."
